Transmission play on a Pug 205 1.1 - Ho Chi Minger
My wife bought an F-reg Pug 205 1.1 GL a few months ago. There was a lot of play in the transmission and it was apparent the driveshafts were nackered.I fitted new ones but there was still a lot of play which appears to have got worse.I suspect the gearbox is nackered and the play is going to wreck the new driveshafts.Any ideas.

How do you know there is a lot of play? Perhaps it makes a clonking noise? Unlikely to wreck new shafts whatever else is wrong. If the gearbox is knackered then there will usually be funny noises during normal drive conditions.

Yes there is a clonking noise upon releasing clutch to pull off and when changing gear and theres definately play.I am not aware of any unusual noises coming from the gearbox.Could be engine mounts i guess. I'll have to figure out a way to check.

to check this out have your partner reverse a few feet with you head in the bonnet ,you should see loads of movement from the gearbox

Thanks, checked mounts top one on engine nearly splitt in half.Replaced it and slack problem is better but not gone.I suspect the play its had for months has damaged drive shafts.Incidently the other two mounts seem ok.

The split mount won't have damaged the driveshafts. I shouldn't worry about it too much as clonk noises are not unusual from driveshafts. Most of the play in a driveline comes from the clutch disc because it has springs to cushion torsional oscillations.
