Focus heated windscreen replacement - muddyboots
Hi all

We have a 2000 Focus 1.8 Zetec, with the Quickclear heated windscreen.

A couple of days ago, the windscreen got hit by a stone, and a crack has developed near the top edge, and is starting to grow slowly.

Does anyone know whether the heated screens can be replaced by Autoglass/Autowindscreens etc etc, or is it a job for Ford ?

Also, any idea of cost ? If it's done by autoglass/autowindscreens, we just pay the £50 excess, elsewhere the insurance will pay out a max of £125 (on top of the excess).

Thanks

I had the heated screen on my 99 Mondeo replaced by someone big, Autoglass I think, 6 months or so ago. No problems, they stock them and even came on a Saturday morning because I asked nicely!

As far as I could see, it was no different to fit from a normal screen, apart from a connector for the electric supply.

As with any screen replacement, I recommend watching over them, letting them know you care about the quality of the job. You want to avoid damage to paintwork and leaks from poor sealing.

Hope this helps

MB,
I've recently had the heated screen replaced on my '97 Escort Ghia X and I used Autoglass for the specific reason that they source the glass from the manufacturer whereas Auto Windscreens actually manufacture their own branded glass.
I paid the £60 excess on my insurance and had a new XXX Triplex screen fitted to replace the original screen of the same make.

I had the heated screen on my 2000 Mondeo replaced under warranty at my local Ford Main Dealers. They got Autoglass in to do it!

No problems at all.

Just a thought Muddyboots, but if your Focus is still covered by Ford warranty I suggest you take a steaming kettle out to the car and mist the front screen up inside and check whether all the heating elements are working. I've had two Ford heated screens replaced on warranty in the past as the elements had failed, and I didn't have to pay a penny.
Worth checking.

Thanks for the advice - I'd thought of doing this after the screen is changed, to check the heated screen is connected up & working OK.

Mind you, I guess all I have to do is switch it on and see if the rest of the cars lights dim substantially !!

I had a couple of Mondeo screens replaced as just a few of the elements had failed. When the heated screen was used with the glass iced over it left a nice neat strip of untouched ice from top to bottom in the drivers eyeline. It made using the heated screen pretty pointless as I still had to do some scraping!

I'd certainly recommend u do the kettle test as soon as u get it fitted and make sure that there are no failed element strips.

Well, we had the screen replaced by Autoglass.

Seemed to do a good job, only took about an hour, I thought it would be much longer !

Thanks for the advice.
