Parking Fine - clariman
I had to drop someone off today for an appointment. I waited in a residents only bay.

A warden camne along and asked me to move.

I did so, but he still typed my reg plate into his hand held thingymajig.

I parked in a nearby car park and walked back. he had ticketed the car behind mine. £40 for him, reduced to £20 if paid within 7 days.

Will I get a ticket throught the post? Nothing was issued at the time? if not, why key in my number plate?

Last night there was a programme on television called "Clampers". In that someone drove off just seconds before the warden stuck the ticket on the car.

According to that warden, it is then not enforceable. They have to get it on to the car, although if you throw it away that doesn't matter. So I'd say you've got no worries.

From Radio 4 this morning...

Clariman - I have a sneaky feeling that his 'hand held thinymajig' (no sniggering at the back) was merely a high tech notebook. He was probably just making a note of your reg so that if he came back and saw you parked there again he could issue a ticket.

I really wouldn't worry too much (he says hopefully!) ;-)

I drove away whilst being ticketed in the City (London) on a handheld a few years back. I heard the same - if it isn't attached, it hasn't been properly served. AA Legal couldn't confirm this but said it sounded about right.

It's common practice for wardens to enter regn. numbers into their data recorders. I guess they do it so they've a record of the plate and time so that if they return some time later they can see whether the same car is still parked illegally and, if so, for how long it's been there. I suppose they can then issue a ticket immediately if any time restriction has been broken.

Actually I think you'll find that they also have to record all contact with members of the public.
