I was nervously waiting for the car to have its MoT, my biggest worry being emission (I did not check it when I bought the car)
Much to my surprised, HC=64ppm, CO=0.00%
39.25 pounds is a ripped-off although they manage to finish all the tests in 20 minutes.

Your MOT may not take very long to carry out, but do not forget that the garage in question will have had to invest a lot of money in the necessary testing equipment before they can obtain a licence to carry out MOT tests. In reality, I suspect that the test fee is still a "loss-leader" in that garages know that they will secure more repair work as a result of being a testing station.
Good news you passed. My mates at work tell me that I am more nrevous when the car is in for an MOT that I was when SWMBO was going into labour. I hate that moment when the garage calls, and you have to wait for the diagnosis....

This certainly does not apply to the MOT station I have used and trusted for many many years. They only do MOTs and have no workshop or connection with any garage so they certainly appear to make a profit from just doing a good job of MOTs.

Is that the reason why the test was only 20 minutes? They would need to get through as many cars as possible if they do only MOTs.

They are pretty good figures. What age/mileage is the car? Anything ever gone wrong with it? (I know that in the US they are reckoned to run for 150k+ without repair).

95N with 107K. No repair and no servicing since 98 (out-of-warranty) except oil change every 5k.
