Hello people
Have any of you had any experience of the load areas in the 960, 850 & V70 volvo estates? I note from the tech spec the latter two are 6 inches shorter in length than the 960 but the same height & width? Is there a radical difference? The reason for the question is trying to convince a 960 driver that yes we will be able to fit his dog cage along with some pre-war breakdown paraphanalia in the back of one of the newer models.
As always any feedback would be appreciated.
P.S. Contacted Volvo already but thought I would try this route to get 'real' feedback.

Hi GreenParrot - I have a 940 estate and my brother has an 850 t5 estate. The 850 and V70 are substantially smaller than the 940/960 in the rear. My brother has owned both variants and confirms this fact. Also on recent inspection of the new V70 v. the previous model I was advised by the dealer that the older model was better for load carrying. The backs of the rear seats of the V70 appear to be angled back quite a bit more too which means the usable area is quite a lot bigger at carpet level than at top of seat level if you see what I mean. This is not so much of a problem if you're carrying lots of separate items but more so if you're carrying larger, boxy items. It's a bit of an optical illusion 'cos when you open the tailgate your eyes are drawn to the floor of the load area which looks quite big but if you look more carefully you'll see what I mean. HTH.

On the new V70 the rake of the rear seat is adjustable, this enables the seat to be set in a more upright position.

Thanks for the info VD5D. I wonder why the Volvo dealer didn't tell me that because I made a specific point of raising the issue. Also, do you have any thoughts on why he claimed the old V70 would be a better bet for load carrying than the new one ?

He probably didn\'t know, I only found out by reading the handbook.

I really don\'t know why the dealer claimed that. I have had an old V70 and I find the new one just as good if not better as it is slightly bigger/wider than the old shape and based on the S80 chassis. Also the new V70 comes with a sturdy nylon cargo net, it\'s a type of rollerblind attached to the rear seats, it has steel rods which locate in the side pillars near the roof, this enables you to load above the height of the rear seats in safety. I use it in conjunction with rachet straps to make sure the luggage is strapped down safely.

Hi again VD5D - I\'m still toying with the idea of a new(er) car and co-incidentally my local Volvo dealer called me yesterday with a view to locating a car for me. I am happy with my 940 and would like another but think I will try a V70 anyway to see how they differ. Mine is now 12 years old and I expect things have moved on quite a bit. That having been said, I\'m not really into gadgets and would happily trade gadgets and gizmos for space, reliability and build quality. My brother doesn\'t think his 850 t5 is a patch on the 940 in these areas although it does of course go like the proverbial \'brown fluffy dice through a goose\'. As for the V70, we\'ll have to see but I might just go for a test drive, why not ??.

Why not indeed, if you want space though why not try out a second hand Merc E Class estate.
