Can somebody please help me. I have a MK1 Mondeo that has an intermitent vibration. Most noticable during acceleration and at high speed. I have had the wheels balanced but that has not cured the problem. I then had the tracking set but only gave me temporary relief. I then had the suspension checked but the garage told me it was fine. I've tried three garages and all say that the car is fine.
Does anybody have any idea what the problem could be.

Yes, definately get the rears balanced. Whoever told you that you won't get vibration through the rears is incorrect. When rear tyres are out of balance you will tend to get a vibration through the bodywork rather than through the steering wheel.

Another thing that, from personal experience, is definitely worth checking when you get odd vibrations is if the tyres are round.
Not as silly as it sounds, jack each wheel up in turn, put a reference indicator near the tyre and rotate the wheel checking the gap.
Don't need to go silly, ie feeler gauges etc!! but a careful visual will tell you if you have a general problem or not. It can even happen to brand new tyres.

hi, not sure if you want to hear this but i was experiencing similar problems to you, and did all the things you did too. the problem was there, until, i for other reasons, replaced my driveshaft, and with it the vibrations went. The drive shaft had warped and gone off-centre and was creating resonant vibrations. To see this, jack up the front of the car, and engage first gear and let the wheels spin. Then look at the shaft and see if it they going `up and down\' as they are turning. You have to be accurate, it will not go up or down by one foot!! just a few millimetres is enough. hope this helps.....

How long did the tracking adjustment give you temporary relief ?
It sounds like the wishbone bushes may be shot. Alternatively Amin may be on the right track with the driveshaft. One of the drive shafts (I think it's the longest one) has a balance weight bolted to it, if it has moved, or fallen off even, then the shaft will vibrate.

A couple of days. But I was only driving around town at the weekend at the time.
With regard to the wishbones I have had the passenger side replaced last year due to worn bushes. I inspected the driver side wishbone this weekend and this seems fine. I wasn't aware of a balancing weight on the driveshaft and can't recall it being mentioned in the Haynes manual but I'll have a look.

Can you be a bit more specific about this vibration? I have re-read the thread, but can't find any mention of where this vibration is happening. Is it through the steering wheel, floor pan, bodywork, a.n. other? I see you mentioned it happened during acceleration and at high speed - are the engine mounts ok?

I can feel the vibration through the steering wheel.

At the last service (Nov 02) they were checked and I was told they were fine. I have not checked them since but it's a good point. I'll have a look this weekend if not sooner.
