Tyres for an S280 Mercedes - Rojer
I'm told by everyone, including Honest John that the S-Class wears tyres very quickly, especially on the front. Typically 6,000, 9,000 or 12,000 miles depending on who you ask and how you drive of course. I drive like I'm on a Sunday jaunt. Apparently.

;)

Which ones do folk recommend? They are 245/60 somethings so not the cheapest in the first place.

In the past I've found myself changing tyres on my old 190E because of things other than general wear (rips, tears, bulges, cracking etc) and so I'm not always sure about spending X% more on a tyre that lasts x% miles longer. The logic being that the chances are that it's not going to make the full distance anyway.

But, as always, open to suggestion ...

The (19-year-old) 190E ran on £100-for-four remoulds for the last three years. One or two DID seem to perish abnormally quickly and it's not an experience I want to repeat on the S280.

just my personal opinion, but I would never economise on tyres and I would never dream of using remoulds. It is amazing that people will try and squeeze the last few hundred miles out of a tyre when they know full well that it should have been changed which in reality is only gaining them two or three pounds but endangering themselves (and others) needlessly.

I agree with you. Don't wear tyres needlessly low. All my (trusted) mechanics have told me that 1.7mm may be legal but it's not safe.

I was making the point that paying an awful lot more for tyres that last much longer doesn't always make financial sense as they are often changed way before their maximum mileage for reasons other than low tread so why bother forking out for a high milage tyre in the first place?

What would be, in our collective experience, be the best tyre (financially) to go for for an S-Class (at 1.8 or so tonnes!)?

For example, ARE Michelin energy tyres made in this size? I only get 20 mpg our of the car, which I expected anyway. IS it worth fitting these for the better mpg vs faster wear? Higher tyre noise?

Which ARE the better brands at this size? One W202 S-Class owner swears by Pirellis.

I'm easy.

It looks worse than the previous one, IMHO.

My Omega MV6 has big tyres (I think 235/45, Z rated). My last purchase was B F Goodrich which the depot told me are actually made by one of the \"big\" manufacturers. They were £320 for 4 instead of over £600 for Michelins. They\'ve lasted pretty well so far - 20k, rears have only another 2 - 3 k in them but fronts are OK (rear wheel drive)

Ermm ... that's a fantastic price Smokie!
Will try to track these down. Are they generally available?
