Peugeot 206 Discs - R6RYM
Other half took her 206 to an independant for 2 yr service, he recommended it needed new discs and pads. Now for a 16000 mile car new discs is a bit extreme I thought.

Drove the car myself and they are so bad that it feels like the ABS is working all the time, and the car lurches to a stop!

Has anyone else had this problem? The goober at peugeot reckoned it was from excessive heat through commuter driving!!!

(plus its still got that stupid power failure problem - emissions is it? ECU cure?)

Any feedback greatly received

1 - It appears that the discs are very warped, so they need replacing.
2 - The pads should be changed at the same time, regardless of whether they are worn out or not.
3 - A gem from one of HJ's recent Telegraph Agony Uncle replies was to suggest that brake discs can be warped by holding the brakes on when the discs are hot ie. after using the brakes. Could this be the culprit?
4 - It might be helpful to ask the garage for the measurements of the discs (thickness and run-out) against the original specs and min/max tolerances, to help you understand what has happened.

Wasn't the suggestion that if you brake, then sit at the lights with your foot on the pedal, heat cannot dissipate from the area if the disk under the pads and therefore causes warping ?

If so, as my car has disks all round and I always use the handbrake at lights, why aren't my rear disks warped ?

why aren't my rear disks warped ?

1. Rear brakes don't brake as hard as front brakes, so therefore it could be that they don't get as hot as the fronts.

2. Does your handbrake operate the rear pads onto the disk, or separate shoes within the rear hub?

Dave - it operates on the pads/disks (I know - i had them off a few weeks ago !)

Yes, that's what I meant ;-)

DD's right about them not working very hard, I think

I've heard this is a very common problem on these cars.

Actually just had the same problem myself. i totally cooked the Tarox slotted rotors on my Rover and warped them very badly. too many rapid decelerations from high speed. Replaced them with EBC Turbo Grooves (to be fair the Taroxes lasted about 60k after the original owner fitted them at about 60k after cooking the original discs in the mountains of Southern France!!)

My partner is a driving instructor (206 1.4 LX 2001 Y reg) and prior to a main dealer service I checked the brake discs/pads (not trusting the local Peugeout dealer you see) and at 38000 miles the pads were fine (original ones) but the discs were 0.5 mm below the minimum wear limit. I rang 3 local dealers (to get the parts and do it myself) and all three said the that was about right mileage for new discs, so 16000 miles is far too low for discs, unless as suggested they are warped, possibly due to binding brakes caused by sticking calipers?...
