405 TD glowplug replacement? - glowplug
Hi,

My 405 is becoming increasing difficult to start and so I guess I need to replace the glowplugs. I'm really sure it's the plugs not a fueling problem. I will be using Berus.
However after a quick look under the hood I thought it would be a good idea to ask for any advice on removing/replacing the far left glowplug buried behind the injection pump.
I really don't want to take it in just for the 'plugs!

Thanks.

Steve.

You may have to use an assortment of the same size spanner,as the angles can vary slightly , usually once "cracked" the glow plug will come out fairly easily. Spray it first with wd40.

You'll find the deep socket won't go on because of the pump, but you can manage with a 12mm ring spanner. Don't be tempted to use an open-ended. All you'll do is round off the corners.

Why not replace the other three and see if that solves your problem. It may be your hard-to-get-to glow plug is fine and it's a couple of the others which are knackered.
I wouldn't risk damaging threads or nearby hoses etc if you can avoid it. The engine should start with just three working glow plugs anyway.

Thanks to all for the tips.

I may yet chicken out of the difficult one, I'll buy 4 plugs and see how it goes. But I'm not one for half a job

You may find that that difficult plug has never been replaced due to it's difficult location.

I don't know the name "Beru", but I bought a set of budget plugs from Halfords which caused lots of problems. Take a deep breath and buy some Bosch.

As far as I know BERU are the original part. Andyspares sell them for under £7 each. Must agree bosch stuff is good though.

Has your GRD expired? What went wrong or was it the mileage?

I agree about not getting Halfords-own.
I had to replace them after only 3k miles.
Halfords kindly gave a refund & I got NGKs.

Rob,

Saddening really to see an old 'friend' go. But if you have a new love in your XM then maybe it's not all bad. Keep us informed on how you go with it, I'll be most interested. I've heard good and bad about XMs but always thought it was a great looking car. I must have a search for the Yahoo group that's mentioned.

Thanks for the info.

Rob,

Will check out the link after this response, thanks. Today's not been a good day, decided to get replacement plugs and airfilter (as a tide it over until funds allow a service) but just as I was nearing the supplier I heard a grinding noise on appling the brakes so I thought better buy some pads as well. I did but they were the wrong ones so another trip back was in order and then the indicator stalk decided to play up!
So as it stands the brakes have been done, the airfilter swapped and 3 plugs - I reckon I can the 4th one with a cranked 12mm ring spanner with the intercooler removed. Off to the scrap yard tomorrow for a indicator stalk!

Just for info having done the deed.

Remove intercooler.
A 8mm spanner to remove the connecting lead. Then use a 12mm cranked ring spanner. A magnetic pickup tool is really useful to stop you losing the nut and manipulating the old 'plug out and the new 'plug in.
