New Honda Advert - Dynamic Dave
Did anyone see the new Honda advert in one of the Heartbeat advert breaks last night? Absolutely brilliant. For those that haven't yet seen it, it's based on numerous car bits and pieces that act like dominoes. eg, radiator falls over which knocks an exhaust pipe into a spring that hits a cylinder head, etc, etc. Very well thought out, IMHO.

Yes

Brillant !!!! Kept me guessing untill the end though as to what car it was, my guess was a Merc, but it was the stunning new Accord "Estate". Well I must say the 156 Sport Wagon has now been beaten for looks !!!!!!
New Honda Advert - MikeC
Yes I thought it was a Merc with the repeater indicator in the door mirror, so shouted out 'it a Mercedes' to everyone watching, then I saw the dash and knew it was the new Accord and tried to flick channels before HONDA came up, sadly wasn't quick enough and whole family fell about laughing that I'd got it wrong - they get fed up of me identifing cars at 50 paces!
New Honda Advert - Clanger
Cracking entertainment. Had me giggling at the end.

Did they do it all in one take, or is there trickery involved?

Brilliant.

I don't want to be a stick in the mud, but it has to be computer generated graphics or stop frame animation... (or both)

Real wheels don't roll uphill!

It was still fun to watch.

There is some stop frame in there, and a little computer tech, but the ad involved sculptors, engineers and artists and took a week to film in a studio in Paris.

Interestingly, the last word 'Isn't it nice when things just work' was spoken by the author Garrison Keillor.

Anyway, this kind of ad supposedly engages an audience more deeply than your average car at speed stuff. Suppose this thread proves that.

For those who haven't seen it Honda have helpfully put it on their website...

Reminded me very much of a German(?) film I saw and may still have on video somewhere - lasted almost 30mins and must have taken ages to set up.
New Honda Advert - thebouncingbunny
liked it ,best car ad for ages.much better than that rubbish "o.k." honda ad.dont think ill want to sit through it to often tho.......

Just seen it during C4 News - Fantastic !!!

Well the joke escapes me.
Five seconds of a cog rolling along a bench????
New Honda Advert - smokie
GWS if you are trying to download it, i had the same problem. It stops after a short while. During the day one of the download options has disappeared too.

Let's wait till it's on the telly...
New Honda Advert - Mark (RLBS)
worked fine for me, although there was a pause at the end of the cog-rolling bit while it loaded the rest of the clip.

I noticed the significant delay and I'm on broadband, perhaps if you're on a dial-up it would be worth waiting and see if it loads more.

Not that I think its worth it - one of those adverts which is good the first time you see it and then increasingly irritating at subsequent viewings.
New Honda Advert - DougB
I liked it. I could watch it several times without irritation, unlike a certain Audi advert with the fish!
New Honda Advert - Daedalus
I have seen the add a couple of times and when it came on tonight poked SHMBO awake in the armchair to get her to watch it as well. I tried to download it at 23:50 with a 1Meg broadband connection tonight and it came up with an error. The site was also very slow, maybe to many people trying to look at it. Have to admit the estate looks superb, as soon as they are in the £2000 bracket I will have one.

Just seen it on ITV, it is brilliant! I'm glad it's on the Honda site, I was going to find out if it was and post a link here myself.
The wheels rolling uphill bit and the oval exhaust tailbox rolling were the only two parts that stretched the imagination a bit, the rest was really cleverly done. Probably in line for an award or two?
New Honda Advert - THe Growler
Growlette says she thought at first it was a Honda falling to bits! Goes to show not everything travels well.....

Simply, stunningly brilliant!

Get the Sunday Telegraph for today, there is almost a full page on how it was made. It seems it took 606 takes before they got it in the can.

Bill
New Honda Advert - Vin {P}
I think Quentin Letts was being taken for a ride there.

He claims it was done in 606 takes in 6 days? Let's assume a day to set up, then 20 hour days (he said they were long days). That gives 100 hours, so we have 6 takes an hour, or 10 mins per take. Having watched stills photographers take a day to take two pictures, I simply do not believe the whole setup could have been reset in ten minutes (including the filming time) six hundred times and ended up with the result we see.

I'll be happy to be proven wrong, but it all sounds a bit fishy to me.

Not necessarily six hundred takes of the whole thing, or even the same thing. I've seen multiple takes of a person saying one word where the camera never stops rolling. It's the editors who fix everything. In fact this is generally true, but very few people realise it.

I agree, but what the article said was that they tried the *whole thing* 606 times and that the end result was a single take, unedited.
New Honda Advert - Baskerville
Sounds like the journalist was conned to me. But it would be nice if it were true.

Vin,

I read the ST article and while I am not sure about the 606 takes, I am prepared to believe that it was all filmed for real with no computer trickery. The article did mention the weighted wheels etc necessary to make it all work.

If anyone _really_ likes it, you can ring the Honda Call Centre on 0845 200 8000 and ask for a copy on DVD. There are only a few thousand though and I've no idea how many are left...
New Honda Advert - Rita
I don't care what was involved in the advertisment's conception and construction, this car ad. is both clever technically and immensely entertaining and beats the last best car advertisement which was the one that had cars doing formation ballroom dancing. Brilliant?, nah! Only just your everday 'slutely brilliant.

Rita.

I have been forwarded a link this morning, should anyone wish to download it. Be warned however, the file is nearly 12MB, so if you\'re on a 56k dial-up, it may take some time. You\'ll also need Quick Time Player to view it.

Tip: If you right click on the above link and select \"Save Target As\" from the drop down menu, you can then save it to your hard drive.

From the Sunday Times...

"Honda promises us that the advert was filmed for real, with painstaking months of rehearsal to ensure the various cogs, dipstick, windscreen wipers and so on all performed in the ?domino? way. However, while it looks like one continuous shot, the advert is two 60-second takes, with a ?stitch? in the middle (as the exhaust manifold rolls along the floor). There was also some low-tech sleight of hand ? the bit where the tyres roll uphill was done using lead weights mounted inside the tyres, so the slightest impact would set them moving."

I've just ordered a copy, sad or what?! I just had to try, partly to see if you were making it up.

Sorry to doubt you!

It's a brilliant advert - technically.

Will it persuade me to buy the car? No!

Actually I suspect it will be a commercial flop.

Was at a Honda main dealer last week helping my dad buy an (old-shape) Accord, and they had a big pile of the DVDs, with a "free - please take one" sign next to them...
