New BMW 5 series - daryld
I saw a photo of it in the Telegraph and somewhere on the web. The first impression: Are those ugly panel gaps I see? Or will BMW say that these are 'pre-production versions'and blag that they will fix this later (which they wont/can't)?

In any case, they will sell lots of them: the BMW brand is so strong that the marketing folks will see to that. Just look at the Z3: proof that you can sell anything to anyone.

I saw the new 7 series yesterday, which struck me how few and far between they are. Must be that peculiar styling on the rear wing, it just looks awful.

Daryl:

Don't know about the panel gaps. I just thought "ugly, very like the 7-series"

I fear that BMW are losing the plot!

IMHO looks like the result of cross breeding a laguna with a 406 to me; combining the worst parts of both.

Come to think of it I reckon the total number of new 'style' 7 series I've seen seen launch must be in single figures.

IMHO no car company can afford to be so complacent in churning out designs that truly suck, irrespective of how good their mechanicals may be, and hope to retain market share. If BMW continue to employ their chief "stylist" Chris Bangle for the replacement E46 3 series, I for one will be looking elsewhere, (probably Lexus), which will be a reluctant switch, as the build quality, handling, performance and low depreciation of the current model is superb. It makes far more sense to sack Chris "Bungle" !!!

Do you think it is a clever BMW ploy to take the marque further upmarket? At the moment, so many BMWs are around, some driven by wallies giving the roundel a bad name, that they are no longer viewed as an exclusive badge to aspire to. I hope BMW succeed because I for one will be happy to continue buying their "ultimate driving machines" irrespective of their cosmetic appearance.

*personal opinion on*

well to me, the head on view looks like they sneaked into the Rover HQ with spare set of keys they kept, and stole the drawings for the ZT/75 or whatever MG name they gave for the Rover 75.

Side view looks ok, shades of laguna/406 but basically the same car shape that any CAD machine will spew out if you put in the same requirements.

The back looks OK but someone knicked the lights from a 406.

All in all, its not unpleasant, but not stunning. Certainly does not have the same ugly ugly rump the 7 series has.

Have to say, seeing cars in photos is one thing, you have to see them in real life to judge.

I also have to say that having chosen a maestro back in my history, My qualifications to judge shapes must be deemed suspect.

I think it will be one of them cars that will grow on us the more we see it. That's their marketing ploy. Bit like the Fiat Punto. Or the current Stilo (I think I spelt that right)...Fiat Punto - look at the second hand price for a car that drives like XXXX....

In a couple of months you'll all be pawing over the 5 and 7 series...(what are you like...)

The last 5 series came out about the time I passed my driving test. I remember thinking that, if I went to uni and got a good job, I might just be able to afford one of the last of that generation when they were brand new.

Well, we're there now, and there's no way I can afford it - but if things work out, maybe I will be able to get this one instead before its first facelift. (Maybe I'm reckoning without Chris Bangle's styling genius though...) It all depends on rather a lot of things. Personally, I like the styling because it's more distinctive than the Mercedes - and anyway, until about the E34 5-Series BMWs were always 'ugly, but good'.

I love the look of the new 5, but then I think the 7-series is fantastic as well - especially in the metal, where it has enormous presence, and exudes progressive, high-tech teutonic self-confidence (exactly what BMW should be about).

I'm sure the 5 will look equally good on the road. The E-class may be prettier, but it's still just a generic Merc; did its looks cause anyone the faintest flicker of surprise when you saw them for the first time?

Well.....

I had a s/h 730 once (most complicated carburettor ever)and it was fine for its time, but it does seem , sadly, BMW has fallen away along with at least some Mercs and you have to look to Audi for Teutonic class nowadays. See HJ's test of the new A8.

After recently buying a new E-Class I started to worry that maybe the new 5-series would be an absolute stunner and that maybe I should have waited to try it.
What a relief after seeing the video. The car is not pretty in anyones eyes but after a while I'm sure it will grow on people a bit. People say to me that the new E-Class is the nicest looking large saloon they have seen but kind of blends into the traffic too much. I think BMW are trying to design cars that are maybe a little too brash and in your face.

Only time will tell but I'm sure it will be another superb car.

I'll reserve judgement on the new 5-series but am I the only one who thinks the current model is pretty awful?

Bland, dereviative styling which has dated very quickly (far more so than the late 80's/eraly 90's model) and is just, well, very boring indeed.

Good car it might be but good looking it's not

No. I drive the estate version and do not always think that it is the best looking car. Even my mum said that it looked a little boring. However I do think that it is a lot better than the saloon.

But
(1) When I drive it I cannot see what it looks like so therefore doesn't really bother me.
(2) I buy a car for what it can do not what it looks like (within reason)

Re above posts about not seeing many BMW 7-series:
In all the miles I cover, I don't think I've seen more than a handful of them. Saw one today, on an 02 plate, which means it must have been going around since at least last August! It still looks hideously ugly.
I reckon I've seen more £60,000 new Range Rovers than new 7-series.
New BMW 5 series - Pugugly {P}
I drove one when they frist came out.....and I was convinced by it, a superb drive, secure, safe and very quick for such a size. I may have stated at the time that I wouldn't care what it looked like if I owned it, being in it was as near as automotive perfection. Personally I would opt for the 730.
