I think it will be one of them cars that will grow on us the more we see it. That's their marketing ploy. Bit like the Fiat Punto. Or the current Stilo (I think I spelt that right)...Fiat Punto - look at the second hand price for a car that drives like XXXX....
In a couple of months you'll all be pawing over the 5 and 7 series...(what are you like...)

The last 5 series came out about the time I passed my driving test. I remember thinking that, if I went to uni and got a good job, I might just be able to afford one of the last of that generation when they were brand new.
Well, we're there now, and there's no way I can afford it - but if things work out, maybe I will be able to get this one instead before its first facelift. (Maybe I'm reckoning without Chris Bangle's styling genius though...) It all depends on rather a lot of things. Personally, I like the styling because it's more distinctive than the Mercedes - and anyway, until about the E34 5-Series BMWs were always 'ugly, but good'.

I love the look of the new 5, but then I think the 7-series is fantastic as well - especially in the metal, where it has enormous presence, and exudes progressive, high-tech teutonic self-confidence (exactly what BMW should be about).
I'm sure the 5 will look equally good on the road. The E-class may be prettier, but it's still just a generic Merc; did its looks cause anyone the faintest flicker of surprise when you saw them for the first time?

Well.....
I had a s/h 730 once (most complicated carburettor ever)and it was fine for its time, but it does seem , sadly, BMW has fallen away along with at least some Mercs and you have to look to Audi for Teutonic class nowadays. See HJ's test of the new A8.

After recently buying a new E-Class I started to worry that maybe the new 5-series would be an absolute stunner and that maybe I should have waited to try it.
What a relief after seeing the video. The car is not pretty in anyones eyes but after a while I'm sure it will grow on people a bit. People say to me that the new E-Class is the nicest looking large saloon they have seen but kind of blends into the traffic too much. I think BMW are trying to design cars that are maybe a little too brash and in your face.
Only time will tell but I'm sure it will be another superb car.

I'll reserve judgement on the new 5-series but am I the only one who thinks the current model is pretty awful?
Bland, dereviative styling which has dated very quickly (far more so than the late 80's/eraly 90's model) and is just, well, very boring indeed.

No. I drive the estate version and do not always think that it is the best looking car. Even my mum said that it looked a little boring. However I do think that it is a lot better than the saloon.
But
(1) When I drive it I cannot see what it looks like so therefore doesn't really bother me.
(2) I buy a car for what it can do not what it looks like (within reason)

Re above posts about not seeing many BMW 7-series:
In all the miles I cover, I don't think I've seen more than a handful of them. Saw one today, on an 02 plate, which means it must have been going around since at least last August! It still looks hideously ugly.
I reckon I've seen more £60,000 new Range Rovers than new 7-series.

I drove one when they frist came out.....and I was convinced by it, a superb drive, secure, safe and very quick for such a size. I may have stated at the time that I wouldn't care what it looked like if I owned it, being in it was as near as automotive perfection. Personally I would opt for the 730.
