Vauxhall Adam - Oil change or wait? - ukheather

Hi I wonder if anyone could advise.

The oil change light has come on. The car is at 10,000 miles and the service is due in September.

Had a look at the level and the oil looks quite clean and is half way down.

Should I change it now or wait the 2.5 month until the service?

Considering the comparison in cost between an oil change and a new engine?

No brainer.

And vauxhall's have an unusual service schedule,

it can be programes for different milages so if the light;s on?

I'd change the oil/filter.

If the service light is on, then get it serviced. Failure to do so may invalidate your warranty.

Services are cheap. Repairs are expensive.

Many cars, most in fact, have a service schedule based on time or mileage, whichever comes first - this seems to be a case of mileage getting to 10,000 miles before getting to the anniversary date.

As diplomatically as I can - what's difficult about "time or mileage, whichever occurs first"

Its not due a service? That is in September 12 months or 20,000 miles

As I said, its the oil change light that is on

Either the car computer is set for a different service regime than the one you want, probably only the dealer can change that - or - it's algorithm calculating the "up to 20,000 miles" has determined that you usage pattern, perhaps lots of short journeys, means that it needs changing now.

yes I know the oil needs changing I was trying to find out if waiting the 2 months for the annual is a bad idea

Talk to your dealer - find out if it's algorithm calculating the "up to 20,000 miles" has determined that your usage pattern, perhaps lots of short journeys, means that it needs changing now.

Not all cars can go "up to" the quoted mileage due to the usage pattern.

No, the oil change light is on. Not the service light. Service is due in September

So you think change the oil now instead of waiting until September when the service is due?

Yes. Get it changed.

This 20k long service interval is terrible for engines lifspan and wear. Get your oil changed every year or every 10k miles, whichever comes first. So if you do 20k miles a year, you get 2 oil changes a year done, roughly every 6 months. If you do 5k miles a year, then you get it changed annually.

What does this light look like.....?

"What does this light look like.....?"

I like your thinking, Richard. Perhaps the first thing the OP should do is check the oil level before driving the car anywhere. Or has the oil pump started to fail? Or is it something else?

Heather, please describe the light you're seeing. It could be important.

As I said, it says change oil

And from my first post

It says change oil...

Page 209 of the owners manual m.vauxhall.co.uk/content/dam/vauxhallMobile/HOME/O...f gives the service interval but adds "unless otherwise indicated in the service display"

Page 80 states "the interval at which an engine oil and filter change will be indicated can vary considerably"

Taking those two together I'd suggest your driving pattern means you won't get close to 20,000 miles between oil changes - and that the oil/filter SHOULD be changed now.

Discuss with your dealer, but I'd simply have September's service done now.

Page 80 does show that you can display the % Remaining oil life yourself whenever you wish.

I already posted yesterday in reply to RobJP saying I will be getting it done

Not pulling the service forward as then I would have to do that every year and next year it will be getting an MOT which I like similar time to the service,

No need for anymore replies, I am getting it done end of thread. Thank you
