BBC News quote

A man was caught reading a newspaper while driving at 70mph during a police anti-speeding initiative in Scotland.
Fife Constabulary said that while the driver was not exceeding the speed limit, he was charged with not being in full control of his vehicle.
The driver, who was apprehended on the A92, was one of a number stopped during "National No Speeding Day" in Scotland, which ran between 0700-0700 BST on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Scottish forces said that a total of 1,894 motorists were detected breaking speed limits compared with 2,145 during the same 24-hour campaign last year.
Other incidents included
a school bus driver caught travelling at 42mph in a 30mph with 10 children on board a 19-year-old who had no driving licence, stopped for driving at more than 100mph in a stolen car
seventeen drivers caught travelling at more than 100mph on the southbound A74(M) motorway.

I'd like to to think he was reading the Daily Mail, engrossed in of its daily "shocking decline in standards of behaviour these days" pieces.
I can well believe the A74M figure, this must be one of the most boring roads in Britain and where just about every driver is doing either the first or last leg of a long distance stretch to/from Glasgow.

How about watching a DVD on a dash mounted TV screen and texting at the same time while doing 110km/hr (seen last night in a Landcruiser)

Only when I have to put the newspaper down to change DVDs. Yes, the Sat Nav does play DVDs. Mind you, other than trying just to check I haven't found the opportunity yet.

Anyway, I'll have to give up reading the paper, I'm forever knocking my pint over when I turn the page.

But does the fact that it's boring make it ok?

Why should it be a crime to drive alertly on a dry almost empty three lane motorway in a modern performance vehicle at a hundred or so, but OK to creep along at seventy in a state of either stupor or foul temper brought on by very natural frustration - and to keep up that pace however dark, wet or busy it may become?

I didn't say it was OK! But a boring road combined with the desire to get a few miles under your belt/get the job finished on a long distance trek is more likely to produce speeding
