Ford Focus ST - Ford Focus ST Mk2 whirring noise - help please!! - Kasim Mohammed

Hi all!

My car is making a noise similar to this one :

youtu.be/V_sqGCjs9QQ

In the comments they are saying that manifold screws were lose. Does anyone know where to locate these and is it something that can be easily be done yourself? Any pictures/diagrams etc would be great.

The noise only stays for like less than a minute after starting the engine.

Thanks

Try and remove the oil filler cap with the engine running. If it is a struggle, and there is a lot of "hissing",then it is very likely the engine breather is faulty. It is part of the oil filter housing .Not a cheap or easy fix.I think the parts are cheaper from a Volvo dealer.

I played the clip to an office colleague who has a 10-plate Focus ST: he immediately said 'oil diaphragm' as it's apparently a known weakness on the ST.

His advice is get it looked at and changed quickly, and don't drive the car far, or fast, until it is changed because there's a risk of blowing oil seals.

If you google 'Focus ST Oil Diaphragm' there's plenty of information, including part numbers and how to change the component yourself. It can be done but will take an hour or two. Parts cost seems to be around £200, and as the Doc said above, it's worth checking the price from Volvo dealers against the Ford prices.

Hi.

Thanks for the advice but it is not that. I have tried both removing the oil dipstick and loosening the cap but it doesn't make the hissing noise nor does it go away. I have had to get the oil engine housing unit changed before so I had an idea that it won't be that because of the sound. The fault you are talking about makes a constant woo woo woo noise over and over where as this is more gritty/hard and stops after say 30 seconds after turning the car on from cold.

Any other ideas or details of the engine manifold screws so I can try tighten these?

Thanks

I'll preface this with the disclaimer that I have no experience with this engine, but that initial 'scream' as the engine starts, with it settling down after the engine's running for a bit, sounds much more like dry bearings in something driven by one of the belts than loose screws, to me.

Does it ever do it when the engine's warm?

Sounds as though coming from the front of the engine. Possibly a failing pulley bearing? Suggest take the front covers off if you can and have a look, listen and feel for hot belt/bearings. The sound can change going from cold to hot. Age? Miles?

Hi

Yes it does this when warm is well. But I have to leave the engine off for a while.

It's 2006 and roughly 85,000

Hi. Okay so had the break down guy take a look. He reckons it is the camshaft variator as after the car runs for a while the noise stops. He explained that the oil drains out when the car is off. When you start it it fills the engine and that's when the noise stops.

Any ideas on this? Googling around I can't find much.

Thanks

As the cam variator works on oil pressure,it may be a good idea to get the oil and filter renewed as a precaution.use quality oil and preferably a genuine ford/Volvo filter.

It has been serviced less than a year ago. The oil and oil filter were changed. Any more ideas please?

Who did the service and did they use the correct spec oil and a genuine filter?

Got it done at Ford so and they used the genuine parts.

I have posted a video of it happening:
