1999 Passat Sport mirrors - andymc {P}
Just so I can be sure - does anybody know if the standard spec for the electric mirrors on this model included the electric folding function, or was this an optional extra? My car has the electric mirrors but they only fold manually. When the car was being sorted out for me prior to collection, they replaced the mirror knob which had been broken off by the previous owner. The new one has a symbol for folding mirrors on its surround, but when I click the knob into that position nothing happens. They said it was just because that was the only switch surround they had at the time. It's not that I'd be lost without the function, but I want to make sure I'm not being fobbed off - it seems odd to me that you would have to specify electronic folding separately when electronic adjustment is already there.

As far as I know electric folding mirrors on Passats were never available in GB, even as an option. I think they were only on USA models and linked to memory seats (electrically operated).
As an aside there seems to be a problem with the mirror switch; I've heard of several breaking. The switch on my wife's year 2000 Polo (same as Passat, Golf, etc.) broke recently; the dealer had several in stock!
Incidentally, the only symbol I've ever seen at the centre position of the switch, denotes mirror heating. In my Passat instruction book however there is a photo showing a heating and a folding symbol! The whole thing is probably a grey area!

Odd. I wonder in that case why they would have a switch surround here with the folding symbol on it at all. Also, my Leon has electric folding mirrors, so it surprises me that VAG would allow a feature on one of their "budget" brands that doesn't appear on one of their "premium" brands. Unless it's just the fact that the Leon is from 2001 and the Passat from 1999 ...

As I said, I won't be lost without it, I just tend to be suspicious of car dealers - can't think why.

Just to add more confusion - there is a 2001 PassatSE in our family. It's loaded with extras (xenon headlamps, special tinted windows, cruise, rain sensor, etc.) but no electric folding mirrors!
