BMW 3 Series Touring - Considering buying BMW 320D SE 2013 high mileage - dspit1664
Considering buying a used BMW 320d SE 2013 with 94000k already on the clock.
Spoke to someone in my local Karate club who says stay well clear of these at that mileage as
that's when fuel pumps and filters go and are v expensive to repair what are people's thoughts on here ?
Car I'm thinking of has been on large care sales forcourt since July 2016 it's now Feb 2017
It's up for £9000 does this show it's a bad car?

Any thoughts on the above 2 questions ?
Cheers
Dan

A total money pit, either spend more and buy a good low mileage car from a main dealer or accept that you can't afford one and buy a much lower mileage mainstream car like a Honda Civic and live within your means.

?? point taken
What would you think -'low mileage' is ?
Take point re other options like Civic but also looking at 2012 ~75k mileage still too high?

I just wouldn't buy a used BMW diesel, there are just too many common faults, particularly engine and suspension problems. A great deal of it caused by BMW's daft biannual service intervals for business users which can see cars at 4yr old with 40-50k having had only one service!

Any modern turbocharged vehicle, especially a chain driven diesel needs fresh oil EVERY year in order to stay healthy. If you absolutely must have one then either spend more to get a low mileage car from a main dealer or If you insist on sticking below £9k then buy a well maintained privately owned previous generation car with a full main dealer service history and budget on maintaining this costly dealer maintenance unless you have a genuine BMW specialist nearby. These are not durable vehicles and require specialist care so if you're on a limited budget I'd avoid, they have a habit of going spectacularly wrong if you try to run them on the cheap. www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/bmw/3-series-f30-201...d

Always a gamble with a high mileage diesel, unless you have a full history which includes receipts for work done. I posted in another thread about a colleague with a 320d with lower mileage which is now having DPF issues.

It may be £300 plus fitting costs for two sensors, it may be that plus a new DPF and if the worst happens a new exhaust as well.

I suspect this is an ex lease car (another warning flag as it will have had minimal servicing) and for £9k you can get much newer and lower mileage vehicles.

The first thing I would check is the service history,

If the oil & filter have been changed every 10 to 12'000 miles it could be worth considering

Otherwise keep away from it

When buying a "premium brand" you need to consider that any parts / repairs are usually based around the new cost of the car, for instance should the timing chain fail the repair costs to buy and replace the engine could be near the same cost as buying a new Dacia
