Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe - Service & MOT costs - cdbr

Hello, I have two questions:

1.

I have been quoted £660 for a MB dealer "main" service to include brake fluid change and oil, air and fuel filters change. (diesel 2.0 litre)

Their MOT price is £35. One advantage is that you get Merc roadside recovery with the service for one year.

Local Merc specialist (ex merc trained owners) is £260 inclusive.

Vehicle is 4 years old with 35,000 miles (mine from new).

My question is; are there pitfalls with the non franchised specialist that I need to consider? And will the change in service history affect the re-sale value in a few years time?

2

What are the average MOT costs, I see there is a recommended maximum of £58, is this pretty much everywhere?

Many thanks

I'll also be facing this question in the next 12months as well, having just bought a C250 that is now just over 3years old. On the face of it servicing by an MB indy is cheaper BUT make sure they're not just 'German Car Specialists' and do actually have MB STAR (this is the Mercedes Diagnostic system and isn't cheap, so usually a good indication they are serious MB specialists). Also check they have access to MB Digital Service Book <DSB> so that the service record on your car is updated on the MB global system.

Before you do take the indy route do weigh up the costs of an MB service plan - you can spread the cost by month but also you do not pay for extra items such as ATF change (likely due at 77500miles on your car), brake fluid change or filters (other than oil). You pay a flat fee per month for up to 3years/3services, so value-wise makes most sense to take it out when you will have Major/Minor/Major service due in succession, which by the sounds of it you have a Major due now. When you consider the ATF change costs upwards of £300 then the service paln starts to make sense to my mind.

Other thing to consider is software updates, especially if the car has COMAND installed - these are all included in the service price. If you have Becker map installed then not a cosnideration as you update this system yourself.

Use the "mymercedes" website to get quotes form other dealers around the country and if you find cheaper get a price match promise.

If the car has dealer history from new the system will advise what work needs doing and it is interesting how prices vary across dealers.

Also be aware they usually quote for the replacement car option which is the most expensive as it includes a day's car hire.

As cws states some specialists are anything but, however some are outfits which once sold Mercedes, no longer do, but maintain the kit and are authorised Mercedes repairers. They can be cheaper.

One thing to consider.

The car is, I assume, outside of warranty. As such, to get any 'goodwill' contribution if you did suffer major problems in the future, it's pretty much essential to have full 'official' MB service history.

Only you can decide if it's worth the extra cost for the (potential) contribution that MB might make to any repairs, or not.

If it were mine I'd keep going to a Mercedes dealer for a few more years yet, for the above mentioned reasons. Basically if you can afford a new or nearly new Mercedes you can afford to have it serviced by them.

Thanks All,

The informtion and views are very helpful, on balance I have decided to go for the MB dealer option, slightly more expensive but more peace of mind by way of the parts and equipment they have.

Nearish neighbour's wife handed her MB in for a 3 year service.

Expecting £400-£500

Actual was £1,000 +/-

They managed to fit disks & pads to rear, wipers, A/C top up......

She paid & her husband went mad - no phone calls, no warnings that there could / would be additional costs.........so be warned and ask for phone call for anything in addition to base charge.

Monopoly figures being bandied about here, no wonder the dealership is a glittering palace staffed with fragrant receptionists and sharp suits, even the parts bloke has a desk in the showroom and sports a suit instead of a blue or khaki smock...for all that you still have to be able to read diagrams upside down so they don't try to supply a complete seat belt presenter mechanism @ £££ instead of a plastic guide (individually available) @ £16.

I'll stick with my MB indy.

The previous owner of my sons E320 booked his car in for oil change and MOT and they phoned to say he needed a new set of tyres to pass.
The bill was £1200 including £600 for tyres. He was so taken back he took it up with MB and they offered a free Mot. He has refused to go anywhere near in future and replaced the car elsewhere.

But when they refuse to hand over the keys when you challenge the bill always take the spare key with you. This worked for another work colleague but it was a case of brinkmanship!

I'm sorry, but I've got absolutely no sympathy at all for him.

"Yes Sir, you need new tyres, they'll cost £600"

"Thanks. Do not do those, I'll get some quotes for them. If you're cheapest, you'll get the work. Note the price for the tyres on the worksheet please"

Of course, if his tyres had reached a stage where they were completely illegal, and had to be done NOW, then I've got even less sympathy for him (if it's possible to have negative levels of sympathy for someone, maybe it involves laughing at them ?), as it just shows a completly negligent idiot.

A small amount of preventative maintenance, and actually checking his tyre depths occasionally, would have left him sorting the job out weeks or months beforehand. An MOT test is not an excuse for running around in an unroadworthy vehicle for the rest of the year

Just to update on the figures:

MB quoted £840 for the next two services (which covers 3 years motoring), I can pay at £35 a month which is a lot less painful!!

The Indy would £520.

Add in recovery plan for 3 years - £150?

The difference is now £170, so taking into acount the points people on here make about the benefits of a full MBSH (not using pattern parts, diagnostic, COMAND updates, and resale value) on balance it is worth it I feel.

Most likely use a Star Mercedes specialist as oppose to a main dealer as they have been good so far (last 2 done with them).

Most important thing is that SWMBO agrees (She Who Must Be Obeyed!)

Remind me to stear clear of Mercedes.

Every make, minor service is oil+filter, major is minor+a couple of other filters+"inspection to see if we can scare the customer into spending more.

Breakdown cover? Why would you need that with a newish Mercedes???

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe - Service & MOT costs - cdbr

The latest on this is (moderately) interesting:

Have just booked two services over two years and as the car will be 5 years old on the second service old it will need gearbox oil and filter replacing, so the total cost is circa £1,160 if paid separately, however with the service plan it is £840 spread over two years = £35 a month.

Saving over £300.

This is through the Star specialist.

There are plenty of indies who work on Mercedes for much less than your dealer quote and you have found one. Loads of deals on MOT's too. I am on my 4th Merc and find that ringing around can save a lot of money when you need something doing. joining the owner's club saves 10% on parts for a start. Their section captains can give excellent advice. SWMBO runs a Volvo V70, we have an old Toyota camper van and I have an SLK (my retirement gift to myself) the Merc is no more expensive than the others to run. Go with the indie at £260.

£660 is a ridiculous price for a service that should cost a fraction of that in reality. Call your dealer and tell them what the local specialist has quoted and ask them to discount the cost, i wouldn't expect them to match it but money off is straight in your pocket.

I've often used the two local VW specialists near me to obtain discounts from the main dealer, one mention of their names provokes talk of money off and it's allowed me to retain a full dealer history and all the goodwill and extra resale value this entails without paying the full price of it.

Remember also that you can call other Merc dealers for quotes and use these to barter down your own. There's a great deal of difference between them. I remember our local (at the time privately owned) main dealer in Ayr was blasted in What Car magazine for being the dearest for servicing in the U.K, higher than dealers in central London despite vastly lower overheads.

Certainly,in our area, even different branches of the same dealer quote different prices for the same service and our very local one quotes different prices between the dealer itself and "Rapit Fit" which is on the same site.Actually the dealer beat the "Rapid Fit" price on a cambelt change.

I knew someone who drove Mercedes 500s - saloon and SLs. The main delaers knew he was rich so the annual bills for maintenance were literally £4k..

"Charge what the market will bear " is the motto of many. And iof owners stay with them - as many do- why not?

Goes off muttering about money and sense....

Our local expert In Rushden spends more time dealing with suspension failures caused by potholes than servicing according to GordonBennet.
But luckily we have a Local
Merc specialist who looks after all the local taxis that are not Prius and he is well respected.

Threatening to drive away with the spare key worked out in a dispute over costs when my friend was presented with the bill for changing the auto transmission fluid!

I think they all try it on at some point. My local Skoda dealer was very good and I knew him personally, but some of his managers were a bit cavalier. It sometimes took the casual mention of 'his' name for them to stop trying it on and be sensible. I had the phone call about my rear tyres needing to be renewed. Declined the offer. Took it straight round to a local tyre fitter who said that there was an average of over 2mm on each tyre. If it were winter he would recommend changing them, but in summer they are fine for a while yet, just check them regularly. They lasted another 4 months and were still legal when I changed them with winter approaching. My ekder brother fell out with MB over lots of issues around servicing and general arrogance. He was a MB man for over 10 years but now is an Audi man and swears by his A8. My friend was a Jaguar dealer on the same 'car farm' as MB, BMW etc and he reckons they were his best referals with their high handed attitude.

Cheers Concrete

Sorry for the confusion Gordon the dispute was with the Main Dealer nearby. But the Indy who looks after the local Merc taxis in our area is a real find. A salesman at the Main Dealer told me about him and he works full time on the taxis.

One thing you'll always see at a good indy is loads of taxis coming and going. Drivers are a bunch of old sweetie wives and any garage that's prone to fiddling, overcharging or gives poor service will soon be bodyswerved by the lot of them.

Place I use always has a bits of taxi lying around and a gaggle of drivers moaning about life outside...

Phew, had me worried there for a bit, thanks for clearing that up SteveieB.

Yes, taxi lads know where to go for service that keeps them mobile, not just that but their cars have to last hundreds of thousands of miles so good work is a given.
