Vauxhall Adam - Tyre Valves - The JBQ Man

My wife caught a kerb and ended up having a new alloy wheel and tyre fitted. I had put a set of indicator dust caps on it previously and when it was returned from repair tried to put the old indicator cap back on the new tubeless valve. It won't fit - the new valve has a larger diameter dust cap thread than the old one (as well as the remaining three old ones). If I remove the new dust cap and try to put it on one of the old wheels it is too large by a couple of millimetres. I was in the motor trade for nearly fifty years and during all that time tyre valves and dust caps have never altered in thread size, we used the same tubeless valve inserting tool for eons. Looking at a number of tyre suppliers websites nobody is quoting any different sizes. What changed?

Sounds like a different type/size of TPMS sender has been used - although my VW/Audi sensors use the same size dust cap as old-fashioned rubber tyre valves.

You'll need to ask the repairer directly what's happened.

If the valve is a different size, it would probably mean a inflator would not fit? Not heard anything about valves changing size, as you say, used the same valve tool for years.
My only idea, is, have you just got a faulty cap? I remember some years ago, a valve cap leaving its thread on the valve, like a heli-coil. There were some that were more complicated than a simple one piece rubber cap.

Very good point. Would mean all garages with inflators having to fit different sizes for different valves/cars. Valves are just about the one component on a car where one size fits all brands (until TPMS came in but its only the hidden gubins that are different),

The OP needs to have a good look, its probably something very simple they are doing wrong.

You were 100% on the money. My local tyre company sorted it out when the car suffered yet another pozidrive screw injury to another tyre. The bottom line was that the valve that had been fitted was "a very cheap and badly manufactured piece of s***. Unbelievable that it was fitted in a main dealership who I am reliably informed do their own tyre fitting and don't farm it out. So everything back as it should be.

Glad to hear it was something simple. Hope you don't find any more lost screws.
