Peugeot 206 - Car whining on accelerating - Sean12xu
Hi everyone, I have an issue I think may be related to either power steering or timing belt pulleys. I just got this old car from my sister and the noise is makes is whiney/whirry and gets more high pitched the more I accelerate. I've been told by a mechanic the power steering and wheel bearings also may need replaced soon but sounds like this car needs help now!

youtu.be/TXAF1scrXkU This is the car and noise

I can get the power steering done but I'm worried if I do, it won't change the noise it's making and that noise will be related to something else. It's highly noticeable and when I'm sitting stationery it just sounds like a whirring which made me wonder if it's a timing belt pulley issue? I'd appreciate any help or opinions I could get.

Sounds like one of the pulleys, or a belt ot tensioner. Your mechanic is probably right. Straighforward for a garage to sort.

Thanks, it was replaced by someone before and assuming somethings up with it. He may not even have replaced the pulleys at same time as the belt itself.

Timing belt may be touching the cover if its not been put on square

Whining is usually wheel bearing/s. I had two replaced.

Quite easy to hear if it's a pulley, or which bit is making the noise

also, if something is rubbing... one side of the belt should be warmer...
or some part/pulley.
as the noise will convert into heating something

Cheers

If it only whining on acceleration its more likely to be gearbox/diff noise than wheel bearings, they tend to whine all the time but will change according to the load on the faulty bearing as when cornering.

The video is with the car stationary so forget wheel bearings etc. It is either a tensioner bearing or the alternator. Regards Peter

It sounds as if the timing belt is too tight - overtensioned.

Sorry, didn't see the video.

The bearing in the timing belt tensioner would be my guess.
