5th gear and RR Phantom test - Flat in Fifth
Sorry to all those of you who are, like me, fed up with constant foglight threads but couldn't let this one go......

OK so it was a little bit misty but was that R-R driving round with its front fogs on illegally or are those actually the dipped head lights?

If the latter why spend £1/4m quid so you can drive around looking like a duh-brain Nova/reverse baseball cap refugee.

Wasn't you then who passed me on the M40 just after Warwick Services on Saturday afternoon? Honest, the driver of a showroom condition goldish Bentley convertible, top down, around 100 mph on the tail of a BMW, was wearing a red baseball cap. Mind you, it wasn't reversed so I guess that's acceptable.

Those are actually the lights. The rectangular ones are too high for type approval regulations (apparently, I wouldn't have thought they were higher than, say, a Range Rover's but you live and learn) and so they're dummies with reflectors only... the round ones have the bulbs in.

The more I see it (on telly obviously) the more I am taking to it. Still, alas, my lottery numbers didn't come up and even if they did, I still wouldn't buy one.

However, did anyone notice the windscreen wipers? It was a right hand drive model, I'm sure, but the wipers were set up as on left-hookers. Just like the current BMW 5 series and, er, Renault Clio and Almera Tino. There's a surprise!

I have a 5 series and did comment on this. The reason that BM don't change them over is because the wipers most of the windscreen because their action pushes the blade out across the screen before going up. This leaves a relatively small area in the top corner that never gets cleaned and to be honest doesn't affect visability. However I would agree that on a car that costs £25k+ let alone one at £250k this is unacceptable.

The new roller looks superb in my opinion.

Isn't 5th gear improving significantly. I really enjoyed the last two episodes.

I am inclined to agree the Phantom looks well, and indeed recalls some of its namesakes of former days; we must remember that it must not conform too much to current fashion, because given the development cost and the low rate of sales the model must last, not seriously changed, for a number of years.

For myself, I'd spend the cash on a top Jap Toyota saloon and a Ferrari, though.
