"Roadcraft" - Rob the Bus
I keep hearing this 'bible' mentioned but have no idea how you can get hold of a copy (if indeed you can). Seems to me that if everyone read a copy then the motoring world would be a hoopier place.
roadcraft - slefLX
I got it in one of my local libraries, am considering possibly buyin a copy so I can have it for eternal reference but I'm sure that's because I'm just very 'sad'
roadcraft - Rob the Bus
I don't think you're sad at all. Since when can voluntary self-improvement be classed as sad? Unfortunately I'm banned from my local library (not because I exposed myself in the gardening section - I still have a copy of The Day Of The Triffids with a return by date of April 1995) so I could do with buying a copy. I keep seeing a full page ad in FHM, Maxim and the like for a book that the police wanted to ban and rather I didn't see. I presume, therefore, that it's a load of scallops. Any b-roomers care to elaborate?

Rob,

You\'re a fan of HHGTTG aren\'t you.
roadcraft - Rob the Bus
At last!!! Someone has recognised the 'frood' and 'hoopy' references! I wouldn't say I'm an obsessive fan, but I can think of worse ways of spending an evening than wacking HHGTTG on the old DVD! (The radio series was far superior though)

Remember - you should always know where your towel is.

Cheers

Rob

I have the original radio series on tape.

Nyaah Nyaah.
roadcraft - THe Growler
I've got the Triffids and all The Prisoner episodes (yup, motoring reference if you think about it) but if anyone has a complete set of The Quatermass Experiment I'm open to discussions.....
roadcraft - Stargazer {P}
Some of the Quatermass series are being released on DVD on 7 April

My tapes from the radio (circa 1970s) have finally died a very slooowwwww death (by stretching) but glad to see that BBC have brought these out on CD so we have THHGTTG all the way to Cumbria and back. Our three year old is starting to recite it in the same way that she learns nursery rhymes!

I have moved with the times, I have the whole of the radio series as mp3 files :-) nicked off a student that had left a copy in some temporary file space. Sometimes they have their uses! Still prefer the book really. To get it back to motoring, I wonder why Douglas chose Ford Prefect as opposed to any other car. Austin Seven would have made an excellent name, if a little James Bond (great cars in that too!)

Oooh we are getting clever aren't we? Crossing threads now is it? You'll only come unstuck when you can't remember who you replied to in which thread!!

That bus for sale, btw, does it come with alloys and air con?
roadcraft - Rob the Bus
Yup - alloy cylinder head and hole in the cab floor ;-)

HF, your mind is like a Welsh railway. One track and filthy!!
roadcraft - HF
DD,

May I say ROFLMAO and not get deleted?!!!

HF

Ps Welsh railway stations must include the infamous 'Llanffair etc etc' one. I can say it but not write it - which is probably just as well for everyone here.

PPS Do you know what the longest word in the English language is now?
HF
roadcraft - DavidHM
Don't know about the longest word but

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwll-llantysiliogogogoch

I cheated by copying and pasting it but I do speak Welsh, badly (I thought that the ll before the hyphen was a ch, but other than that, can spell it)

Floccinaucinihilipilification appears to be the longest word in English, unless it is antidisestablishmentarianism. I quote:

Back in the eighteenth century, Eton College had a grammar book which listed a set of words from Latin which all meant ?of little or no value?. In order, those were flocci, nauci, nihili, and pili (which sound like four of the seven dwarves, Roman version, but I digress). As a learned joke, somebody put all four of these together and then stuck ?fication on the end to make a noun for the act of deciding that something is totally and absolutely valueless.
roadcraft - Robin
Longest word? Well, think yourself lucky you are not a doctor having to try to pronounce
pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis (a lung disease)

or even worse a chemist like me (not the pill dispensing type) where long words are something of a daily occurrence. How about the chemical name for the tobacco mosaic virus which has 1913 letters!! (no, I am not going to put them all here)

Its enough to bring on hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia (fear of long words)

OK I'll get my anorak.

Thanks very much for that, David - believe it or not, only yesterday my dad was questioning the value of that 'flocci' word, asking what its origins were and whether it was just a made-up word. Your answer clarifies it all.

Forty two.

Grrr - that was supposed to reply to Dave's other message asking the MEANING of hhgttg, so it would have had a point. Oh well.

Sanity return. This thread was becoming something akin to a Monty Python convention in a HHGTTG stylee.
Roadcraft - Rob the Bus
It's amazing how surreal these threads can become if you don't keep a close eye on them, isn't it?
Roadcraft - blowpipe
'close eye on them'......
Go on. This is another HHGTTGism, isn't it?
Roadcraft - Rob the Bus
Actually, it's not. But it's not unlike being hit round the head with a slice of lemon. Wrapped round a large gold brick.

(That was, if you hadn't noticed!)
Roadcraft - Flat in Fifth
there is also a "civilian version" for professional drivers.

FiF, I haven't yet but I'm going to soon - along with buying my own copy of "Roadcraft". THey're the kind of things I'll probably still dip into from time to time after about 5 or more years. Yes, it's sad.
Roadcraft - Obsolete
I have read the Highway Code signs section several times over the last few years, and each time I forget the less obvious ones after a few weeks. So I could spend most of my life reading the Highway Code, or I could come to the realisation that I will never know what some signs mean. It does seem to me a bit of a failing if the rules of the road are too complex for all but a few.
