Peugeot 207 SW - Direction indicators not working at rear - Steveieb
The indicators stopped working on the rear of my girlfriends 207.

Thinking it was a bulb change she took it to the main dealer who phoned her to say that the bulb was ok and the wiring harness was faulty.

She agreed to have this changed but when she came to pick it up they said it was still intermittent.

They claimed that the Harness was faulty and power is now reaching the light cluster but to fix the problem she would need the part that connects the harness to the bulb holders.

Has anyone had any experience of this problem which appears to affect several Peugeot rear light clusters ?

This is a common problem on most rear lights found on French cars.Peugeot supply a repair plug and wiring ,about £50 per side, but if the pins in the lamp holder are burnt, then new holders will be needed.

Once again Elekie doctor your advice is always spot on. They have replaced the wiring and said the result is intermittant. Therefore they recommend new holders which cost £100 for parts alone.

How is it that other manufacturers outside France do not suffer from this.

the main dealer replaced the wiring harness and the complete rear light section. upon examination the connector pins at the bulb holder were completely burnt away.

suely this unit is not fit for purpose and peugeot have issued a service advice on what to do if this happens, which would indicate that they are aware of the fault.

have there been any cases where peugeot have refunded the cost of this replcement ?

It is always the earth pin that overheats on these,as it is taking the current for all the bulbs.I doubt if Peugeot are that bothered about the problem as the same fault occurs on the later 208 models.I can only assume it is good for business as they sell more parts.Interestingly ,there is a trade trick for repairing this lighting fault that requires no new parts.Any good sparky could have fixed this for around an hours labour.I realise this is no good to you now,but worth thinking about for the future.

Its always interesting to get to the bottom of a problem and your advise on the column elekie doc is invaluable.

But what a situation to ask customers to pay for complete rear lamps and bulb holders and wiring harnesses just because the design engineers did not carry out a simple check to ensure the connector pins were specified correctly.

Quite the reverse was true in my Mk1 Honda Accord which had aircraft standard connectors set in epoxy for strength.

Have manufacturers have a resonsibilty to replace defective items such as the ones detailed in this thread?

I guess it's a juggling game of cost, qualty and reliability .As long as the components last the warranty period, that is all the makers want.

Sadly this is a known issue on 207s (and the 407). I've even seen it on some newer 308s - the earth wire is woefully inadequate and burns out and causes the damage. I've seen it on at least a dozen 207s.

For future reference there is a repair guide here:

But this is a design fault that Peugeot should be footing the bill for.

Thanks to both Gibbo and eleki doc for your brilliant advise.

Do you consider the heated connectors on the earth lead pose a fire risk?

The main dealer fix entailed replacing both the wiring harness and back lamp unit at great cost. Why on earth they don't follow your simple but brilliant instruction?

Main dealers will not entertain any cheap/work-around fix .It is not a fire risk,as the current consumption is very low, under 5 amps per side, and that is with all bulbs illuminated at the same time. Also a job like this is good for business and parts sales.Don't quite know how they can charge £50 + for a connector and wires that can be bought for less than a fiver.Burnt/overheated connectors on rear lights on French and italian cars goes back years,so nothing has changed.Similar problems can be found on the old Bmw e46 models and MB c-class W 204 models.Interestingly the replacement parts are cheaper than Peugeot.
