Came across this site with some startling facts and figures on the pollution and waste generated in the making of and in the use of the motor car.
Authenticity may be questionable as it is biased, nonetheless I found it interesting.

Well now, that\'s a little embarassing.
Allow me to explain;
Mal originally messed up his posting of the link. Actually he posted it a few times. I straightened it out and reduced his contributions to one note, rather than his accidental three.
HJ sent me an e-mail commenting that we had a link to what he considered a very \"anti car\" site.
I hid the original note whilst I thought about it. In the meantime, Mal reposted since he thought he\'d made a mistake and failed to post it at all.
Dave mooched along, saw the note he thought I had hidden had become revealed. He then tried to hide it as I\'d originally wanted, unfortunately he hit the wrong button.
Not Mal\'s fault, and not Dave\'s. If anything, mine for Moderating on the run.
I\'ll let Mal\'s note stand, but I do want to emphasise that I see it as hugely anti-car and don\'t like it. It contains the worst type of \"statistics\" specialising in double-counting and half truths.
However, if one sees it as an indication of the sort of propoganda we, as motorists, have to combat, then it has some value.
This has been an exceptional screw up brought to you as a special offer by your moderating team. More normal screw ups will be resumed as soon as possible.

Mark, Dave,
All is forgiven.
Regards Mal.

Why is the anti-car lobby so strong and effective???
Why is the motorist so inefective?? The 'motoring organisations' must have 1000's of members, why can't they shout louder??
Is it because the motorist spends too much time in queues and is stuck, whereas the tree-huggers can write their vitiolic comments while their bus is stuck in the same queue??
Why can't we have sucessful mass civil disobediance like the French?? Why do we just sit back and take it??
Oh dear, pass me the pills please ;-)

> carbon dioxide
This is *not* a greenhouse gas. It's too heavy.
|
"It's too heavy."
So's water, but it still manages to rain...
CO2 is a small constituent of air, which is a fairly evenly distributed mixture of gases, mostly nitrogen. It has the property of passing high frequency infra-red radiation, but 'trapping' the lower frequency stuff, as glass does in a greenhouse, hence the phrase 'greenhouse effect'.
Beyond a certain point (percentage of CO2) there is 'thermal runaway' where the whole thing gets a little out of hand, a good example of which is Venus, where there is lots of CO2 in the atmosphere, it rains acid, and the surface temperature is something like 200 deg.C IIRC.
Probably not imminent here, but worth bearing in mind, perhaps...
|
My mistake - it's 467 deg.C.
|
Venus is a few million miles nearer to the sun! Also, how much CO2 is released everytime a volcano erupts?

JBJ,
thanks for that post - several things that grab my interest there, although probably, mostly, above my head. Interesting though :)

Don't lose sleep over it, HF - it would take a few millennia to get that far, I think! I should also have added that cars are nothing like the major contributor, either - they (we) just happen to be a soft target, unfortunately.
|
Ok - guess I'd better try to get that sleep you mentioned JBJ.
I personally am a soft target for everything, btw, motoring or not!
Good night JBJ, and everyone else.

ROFL M,
wish I'd been around earlier!

Yep, guilty as charged. Too many buttons - not enough time.

You can bet on that.

Is there a place where I can formally complain about the moderating on here? Suddenly, and for reasons unknown, it has become too much ;)
