ford focus 1.0 100ps zetec ecoboost 2013 - Engine failure warning - monkeyboy63

Did a 25mile round trip yesterday,(hottest day of the year..30odd degrees),& filled with petrol. Went to go go out in the evening & engine failure warning appeared(& audible warning). I turned the engine off & restarted after a few seconds. Everything fine. This morning I checked oil level etc. The coolant level was below minimum & no visible sign of leak. Car was recently serviced at Ford dealer & recall work was done..Coolant pipe replaced.

Started car, warning came up again, with engine light illuminated aswell as ! exclamation symbol & was running very roughly. Switched off & restarted, running perfectly.

Used the car this evening, warning came up again & proceeded to go into "limp mode". Parked up,switched off,re started & idled for 5 mins & all fine. Got down the road & warning again, but car running perfectly??

Anyone had similar problems,& was it rectified?

Going in to dealer tomorrow, but don't want to be fobbed off with no fault found on diagnostic check.

Suspect the warning was triggered by the low coolant level.

Once the engine warms the coolant expands & covers the sensor again so no warning again until the engine cools.

You say the coolant pipe was replaced recently.

Sounds like they either didn't top it up properly after the work was completed or have left a slight leak.

Coolant leaks don't always show up until the engine is fully up to temperature.

You have a point there. Never had any issues before,& wondering if it is something they've done. Drove fine on way to garage, albeit engine symbol permanently illuminated. I checked my tyre pressures the other day & they were over inflated. Garage was last one to touch it,on service.,so not impressed with that either.

Just called the dealer for an update. They are currently fitting a new throttle body, under warranty. Fingers crossed.

Since the throttle body was changed a couple of weeks ago, the car is running absolutely fine & there doesn't appear to be any other issues.

Spoke too soon!

Returning from work this evening, just joined a dual carriageway & engine seemed to splutter/mis-fire. Engine malfunction...Service,message appeared (!) symbol illuminated.

Drove on with light throttle & car then went into limp mode....a bit scary when you're doing 60 mph then suddenly decreases to 40mph,especially with rush hour traffic rearing up behind you & going up an an incline!

Left the dual carriageway & pulled over as soon as possible. Waited about 30 seconds before switching off,& left for about a minute before re-starting. Warning message displayed, but engine running fine for rest of the journey.

Car is booked back at my local Ford dealer next week. The technician who deals with diagnostics is on holiday???? No loan vehicles available until the following week, but fortunately I can use my daughters' car.

I've had this car for nearly a year & it's been a pleasure to drive,& fairly economical(36-46mpg). I hope that I don't end up having to get rid of it, if it's going to carry on being problematic.

It seems the plug on the new throttle housing was not making good contact. They say it should be ok now. We'll see.

Chatting with my window cleaner,he asked if my Focus was an ecoboost, as one of his customers had exactly the same problem. His turned out to be the ECU,which was changed under warranty (otherwise a £1200 fix). The main dealer he used, then recommended he get rid of it!

And buy a new car from him.

A £1200 ECU would be less than a new car.

But the ECU is replaced free under warranty.

Great dealer.

ECUs can and do fail - it's relatively rare, but it happens. My dad's Fabia had an ECU problem occur at a few weeks old. The supplying dealer was surprised and had to source one from Skoda European HQ but didn't inconvenience my parents, they got a replacement car for the duration etc.

All it takes is a dry joint on the circuit board, or a capacitor failure.
