VIP Car Sales - Knutsford - Siobhan W

***PLEASE READ**** If you are considering buying a vehicle from this garage. • Jeep sold with known faulty Turbo. • Sold with 12 month MOT but was actually 5 months. • Garage sold cherished plate without permission. • No warranty activated due to tincorrect completing of DVLA forms. • Courtesy car provided was poor quality. • Told car was repaired, yet an independent garage said the engine cover had not been removed. • Hours spent trying to contact Garage only to be fobbed off. • High Court Enforcement Officers recovered full costs through Court. We purchased a Jeep from VIP Car Sales, impressed by the website and initial contact with the company and we fell in love with the car. Richard seemed genuine enough. The engine light was on as we drove away, he plugged it into a computer and he assured us it was just the valves. We took it back to be fixed but the next day the light came back on. We got a second opinion from a local garage who said our turbo was on its last legs in OverBoost mode. Annoyed that we had been sold a car with a known fault by a seemingly reputable garage, we contacted Richard again, he said it would be a couple of weeks till he would be able to look at the car, but I explained we couldn't risk driving it around as it was literally on the verge of blowing. He said to call the AA if we broke down. Without a choice, we drove the Jeep 70 miles back to Richard (we live in North Yorkshire). We were given a Y reg Ford focus with ripped seats, no radio, no blower (in the height of summer) broken windows and only 1 door that would open with a key. We have 2 toddlers and I was 7 months pregnant. A month later after chasing him weekly, Richard said he had reconditioned the turbo "out of his own pocket", but sure enough the next day the light came on again. After a second opinion again, the garage informed us that the engine cover had not been removed and the turbo was in the exact same OverBoost condition. I threatened to take it back and recover my money under the Sales of Goods Act which Richard refused to do and said it doesn't apply to motor vehicles. I wanted him to pay for the new turbo fitting, he refused but after numerous calls he said he wouldn't pay for the labour and would only pay for a second hand Turbo. The total bill was £1100. They incorrectly completed the forms for the DVLA and sat on them for 4 months! In which time he sold my car with my personalised plate on, which I have now lost! When the forms eventually came through we found out that our MOT ran out in July 2014, not in March 2015 as advertised when we purchased the vehicle. Fuming, my husband called Richard who's response was "you sort it, that car has already cost me enough money!" The MOT bill was £680 so we decided to contact the small claims court. Last week we received £1,226 in compensation from the small claims court (not without a visit from the bailiffs) and Richard received a CCJ. We no longer have the Jeep after the Cam Shaft failed just 2 months after the turbo! We decided we wouldn't spend another penny on it and opted for a shiney new Kia Sportage :)

No warranty activated due to tincorrect completing of DVLA forms.

What has the DVLA got to do with the warranty, please explain

impressed by the website

Anyone can buy an impressive Website, proves nothing other than some people will believe anything they read.

I presume your finely developed 'nose' tells you whether to believe a professional-looking website you have seen for the first time then?

Its common sense and has been said on here by many before. Don't believe a thing you read and a glossy site means nothing.

I almost learned the hard way about fantastic websites full of guff.

Story too long to tell here, but there's lots of people learned from (buyable) politicians and other untrustworthy sales people that telling the voter/buyer what they want to hear is extremely lucrative, and membership of trade association means nowt when someone just starting up can pay their fee and hey presto, a master whatever complete with logo.

Buyer beware is as relevant now as it ever was, you have to keep your eye open for the giveaway, usually when they overegg the pudding, a bit too clever for their own good.

What makes it too long to tell here? Will it break the internet?

But one can't go through life assuming absolutely everything is a con. Some things are, but others aren't. Some people will always get caught out.

Websites are always going to be harder to suss than misspelt Emails claiming to be from a bank one has nothing to do with, or from an ISP.

"But one can't go through life assuming absolutely everything is a con. Some things are, but others aren't."

True - but the internet in general as an information source you can trust is much more slippery than almost any other medium. Very little subtext, spin, subtlety (or call it what you will) is transmitted online.

Unconvincing e-mails supposedly from your bank are relatively easy to spot, but plenty of people still get conned.

Therefore you should treat information on the internet with the utmost caution.

Hi Siobhan,

I'm going through a similar situation that you suffered with VIP Car Sales and have been for a few months now.

I would really, really appreciate some advice on your experience with the High Court Enforcement Officers.

If you could contact me on my email below, I'd be extremely grateful.

The other thing not to believe are ratings reviews like these. There are companies out there that sell ratings like these for a small amount of money.

I too have been a victim of Richard Gleave (VIP Car Sales, Mere, Knutsford)

I have today set up a Facebook public group for other victims to come together and try and help each other.

Here > www.facebook.com/groups/1910144039215591/

Over 60 people have made complaints to the police in the past week and a large case is coming together.

Richard Gleave has been arrested but is out on bail.

The more people that come together the better chance of proper justice being served.

"Friends and new neighbours enjoyed browsing the great selection of cars on show, which included a red Ferrari P4, a white 1964 Corvette and a white 1911 Porsche GT3. " (from Cheshire Life, above)

Clearly they'll believe anything in Knutsford....

Anyone in the unfortunate position of having a Gleavance (sorry!) with this company should note that a new limited company, Mere Car Sales Limited, Registered number 10659215, was incorporated 2 weeks ago. Issued Share Capital a massive £1.

Mr Richard Sean Gleave owns this £1 share.

Many thanks for the information.

This is of course perfectly legal under company law, but if a director is convicted of a criminal offence in connection with running a company, or for any reason is judged by a court to be unfit to run a company, (s)he can be disqualified from being a director of any company for up to 15 years.

And his wife will then probably set up the company.

No. Because if a person is so prohibited, the prohibition also extends to being a 'shadow director'. In such a case, both the person and their partner would be guilty of much more serious crimes.

In such a case (acting on behalf of a disqualified person), the disqualified person can be sentenced to prison, and the person acting on their behalf can be personally liable for any debts.

Probably a bit late to comment but I can report that there are no longer any vehicles at the premises which appear to be unoccupied.

Have often wondered who would buy ,say, a Porsche from here with limited warranty and no service facilities.

The business was situated opposite seriously expensive houses (and I mean seriously expensive!) and I often wondered if they sold used cars on behalf of some of the residents. Solicitor "Mr Loophole" lives there too!

VIP Car Sales - Knutsford - Manatee

The garage will presumably end up as expensive housing then at some point.

VIP Car Sales - Knutsford - Miniman777

Here's a further barrage of dissatisfied customers....

Sorry - censored. It still isn't clear to people that it's extremely risky to accuse someone of a criminal offence on a public forum (even with the laudable intention of warning others), and even more unwise to do when a case is sub judice.

Thread closed.
