Clean the wheels thoroughly then get dustless pads. Look for Green Stuff brake pads, I fitted them to the Omega some few thou miles ago and haven't had any dust problems since. Thoroughly recommended and not that expensive either.

Doesn't all these cleaning aids remove some of the protective coatings on the alloys. Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't all these products an acid of some kind? Personally if I were to use such a product instead of good old fashioned elbow grease, I would give the wheels a good coating of car polish/wax afterwards.

Not all alloy wheels are easy to polish.
I had an XR3i with wheels that had nearly as many "spokes" as a real spoked wheel and these would have taken an eternity to polish. Then I had a ZX Volcane which had 3-spoked wheels which would have been a doddle to polish. My latest 2 litre Focus Ghia comes somewhere between the two, and these are bad enough to wash, let alone polish.
L'escargot by name, but not by nature.

Yes DD. Wonder Wheels has done an excellent job of dulling my alloys and stripping down to undercoat in patches. I've changed to EBC Greenstuff now and elliminated the need for all that cleaning.

I agree with DD it certainly does take the protection off.
Wash often, even if you are not washing the rest of the car using nothing more than elbow grease & car shampoo (Auto Glym seems good to me).
I gave up getting spoked type wheels - they look good but there are wheels that look just as good without the aggro IMO.
Besides the toothbrush never tastes the same again.

DD I used Wonder Wheels to clean my alloys for 3 years no problem, but I was sparing with how much I used it. I only used WW when elbow grease and the power wash didn't clean them to my satisfaction. This usually worked out about 1 wash in 3.

Don't get me wrong guys (and gals) I do use these alloy wheel cleaners on occasion. BUT when I do so, I always apply some protection to the wheel surface afterwards - that being car polish. I find then that the wheels are a lot easier to clean the next time round.
