Just had the AA out this morning after what looks like the vacuum pump on my '96 Rover 420TDi seized up. Looking through these forums I noted that many turbo diesels have a combined alternator/vacuum pump, is this the case with mine? It was certainly attached to the alternator but I couldn't tell whether it was removable or not. Are these hideously expensive? Just wondered, just so I am prepared for the shock when the garage phones...

according to my borrowed 1996 model Rover 400 official Rover workshop manual the vacuum pump is bolted to the alternator with four bolts and therefore it is removable. As far as prices go, just give the garage parts dept a quick call.

Same thing happended to my 420sd. (This is where you can still drive it but you dont have any brake or steering assistance?)
Local garage charged me citrca £150 IIRC.

Turns out that it was the alternator that seized up, approx. £250 argh! Next time something like that happens I'm doing my own repairs.

As an aside to this, where do you get workshop manuals from? I used to use Haynes manuals but noticed the quality drop so gone off them a bit.
