My daughters car has been making this noise for about a month,& it's so loud pedestrians look & stare. 2 weeks ago,it went in to Seat main dealer to have gearbox oil changed from synthetic to mineral. ( Global recall,it seems)

She told them about the noise & they handed back the car ,saying it was ok.Needless to say,it isn't. A few days ago,it was fitted with a new set of tyres & had 4 wheel alignment check. I asked for the wheel bearing to be checked,& all was fine.

I have since been to another independant garage who road tested it on a recently re-surfaced main road (there's a rarity),& the tech reckons it's a problem with 2nd gear?

This car has covered 29k miles,serviced independantly,& has not been thrashed. It's been used daily,mainly on A roads & some local.

It is going back to the main dealer next week to be tested. What are the chances of any necessary work being carried out under warranty??? (There obviously seems to be a global problem with this gearbox)

Unfortunately you only have to read through posts on this forum let alone others to find the probable answer to your question. VW do not have a reputation of making free repairs out of warranty and especially with this gearbox. The fact you have had it serviced outside the VW network won't help your cause. Good luck with VW.

Cheers. I don't hold out much hope either,but I will give it a go.

I think it's pretty abysmal that a 4yr old car can a have such a potentially major fault like this. Oh well,VW group is going to lose yet another fan.

My sympathy is rather limited. Main agent servicing isn't THAT much more expensive than independent, and gives you at least some grounds for requesting goodwill.

For 4 years/29k miles, the saving has probably been £250 or less, by going independent. It was a gamble, and it looks like it hasn't paid off.

That's what gambling is.

I'm not after sympathy. As it was,she had bought the car from a Seat Main Dealer who had sold her a service plan. Unfortunately,the dealer went into liquidation,& at that time it needed a service. There isn't another dealer for miles.

Main dealer servicing or not,the gearbox doesn't need an oil change until 40k anyway......there is a major fault with these units,hence the recall????? d'uh

P.S. When I have my own cars serviced,I always supply OE parts,not "Mickey Mouse" ones'.

I have owned several Fords,bought from the same main dealer. They have carried out warranty work,knowing that I have servicing done elsewhere. Never had any problems with them.

As a rule it makes sense to stay within the makers dealer network for servicing during warranty, but once warranty is up then the make you have bought effectively makes the choice for you to stay within dealer framework or move on.

Some makers stand by their product for at least a reasonable time after warranty has expired, especially on components that have proved troublesome and more especially with such low mileage, others makers don't, simple as.

I'm sure I read somewhere.that VW North America have extended their gearbox warranty to 100k miles?? Funny how they do things for different countries.

Daughters car was bought,approved used 18 months ago.

Unfortunately, with the dealer you bought it from having gone out of business, you're not in a good place.

Your contract (if, for example, going down the route of 'not fit for purpose') would be with the dealer. Nothing at all to do with VAG.

As I said though, IF it had been serviced through the dealer network, you'd have some grounds to appeal to VAG head office for some goodwill. By the fact of not doing this, they've no idea what oils, filters, etc. have been used in the servicing. In addition, if it had been in the dealer network for servicing, then it would have had any recall/tsb work carried out when in for a service.

Your only course of action (as I see it) is to probably commision an independent engineers report, if that states that there has been damage caused to the gearbox, and that damage was due to the wrong gearbox oil being used in the factory, then you have a case, and can probably take it to the small claims court if VAG still refuse to replace the gearbox.

The problem with that approach is that the gearbox is (currently) still operational. Arguing that you want a working (and expensive) part replacing because it MIGHT break in the future isn't the greatest argument in the world.

Roll on, Thursday.

Let's see what they say. Actually, it was only the last service which was done independently, not that it will probably count in our favour.

I'm not tarring all main dealers with the same brush, but I only like to deal with people I trust/ have a good reputation.

A family member had a friend who worked in a Ford service dept. It wasn't uncommon for a customer to drop their car off in the morning, then collecting it "finished", when infact they hadn't touched it, alledgedly. (Well, maybe a wash?)

A few years ago, I was interested in a new Seat ibiza & went to see what trade in value I could get for my Fiesta titanium tdci.

I was informed by the "sales executive", that I didn't have enough equity in the car,& a it was a shame that I didn't have GAP insurance, as I could've paid someone to torch the car! He brazenly told me that he had got a friend to do this for him, in the past.

I only wish that afterwards, when he'd asked my occupation, that I'd said I was a police officer.

Still, nice sparkly workshops/showrooms.
