Omega Help, quickly please - Omega Owner :-)
Hi everyone, i was hopefully going to buy a 1998 S Registration Vauxhall Omega 2.5 V6 CDX Estate with 42,000 miles on the clock, 2 owners, and FULL SERVICE HISTORY for £6700 on Saturday, and NOW i am petrified !! i have read most of the points on here, and i just dont know what to do, it`s my FIRST luxury motor, i play in a band and travel up and down the country, so i needed a big estate to get all my keyboards etc in, shoudl i still buy it ? because i dont know what to do now, i know the fuel costs will be higher (obviously) than my 1995 Peugeot 405 Turbo Diesil GLX estate. but what the heck, i am only intendind to use it 3 days a week to cover about 400 miles, I NEED ALL YOUR ADVICE PLEASE !!

thanks very much

Wayne from Oxfordshire

Should i get a Newer Registration with more miles on it ?
or an older registration with less miles ?

i WAS looking forward to my new car on Saturday, but my decision is in your hands guys and gals :-)

I bought a relatively low mileage MV6 almost 2 years ago now, and have never enjoyed a car so much.

It strikes me that buying secondhand is always going to be a gamble. However, with the Omega you are buying a decent car at a fraction of it's original cost, and with it you get all the luxury you could want.

Other people will advise whether the price is right. I think I probaby paid a bit more for mine than I should have. But quite frankly it is the Best Car I have ever owned.

Last word - heed the advice given freely here by people who really KNOW what they are talking about - 5k oil changes etc. You really DON'T want anything going wrong with your Omega as remedial costs a lot more than preventative!

There are quite a lot of Omega owners around here; so far none of them have really commented. Most of them are very happy with theirs though, they seem ot take

Genuine, low mileage ones are difficult to value, as virtually no one buys them to drive to the church, shops and golf course only. Even if they did, they wouldn't sell them very often.

Assuming your car is truly mint, all the history is there, you've HPI'd it and are satisfied the mileage is genuine (is it the champagne gold one in Aylesbury in AutoTrader?) then it is a fair price. Probably the ideal car for you would be an Audi A6 TDi Avant - the only problem is that the best deal I can find is about £11k, which would get you a Y plate Omega diesel.

Did you say you were doing 400 miles a week in it? If you got 48 mpg from one of them, as against 28 from the V6, you'd come out over £3k ahead, without taking into account depreciation or maintenance issues.
Vauxhall Omega Help, im desperate please - Omega Owner :-)
Hi Smokie, just wondered if you could help, my new cars going really well, and i`m very pleased with it, but my fuel consumption dashboard computer display thingy says that at the moment its doing 20 - 23MPG, does this seem correct to you ?
i have been driving mostly round the town, havent done much motorway driving in it yet though... does it appear to you, that my car is drinking too much fuel or running a bit high ?
i read that the car should do 27-39MPG ?

cheers

My Vectra 2.2 auto only manages 23-24mpg around town if I pootle, but put my foot down and i've had the mpg go down as low as 18-19. Although your Omega is a manual box, it sounds about right considering yours has a larger engine and heavier bodywork than my Vectra.
Vauxhall Omega Help, im desperate please - smokie
That's probably about right for town driving, although don't forget I have the 3.0.

I also found that the readout overmeasures by a few mpg. Try brimming at each fill and actually measure your own mpg for a couple of tankfuls to compare to readout.

They are heavy cars to keep stopping and starting, but once on the move they are not so bad.
Vauxhall Omega Help, im desperate please - Omega Owner :-)
Hi Smokie, sorry for appearing thick, when you say BRIMMING ? you mean actually filling it to the very top of the fuel tank, so that you cant physically get anymore petrol in ?

i been doing a lot of motorway driving the last few days, and have managed to keep my speed to about 65mph, as i wasnt in much of a rush, and my fuel computer says its doing on average 30.8 MPG that still seems crap, i thought i heard it would do at least 38MPG somewhere ?

cheers

Waynester
Vauxhall Omega Help, im desperate please - Gazza
Hello,

30.8mpg at 65mph seems low. Were you using cruise control? Using cruise control usually yields lower fuel consumption.

For your reference, my 3.0 QX does 30mpg at 75mph using cruise control and 35mpg at 65mph.

Hope this helps.

Best,
Garrison
Vauxhall Omega Help, im desperate please - Omega Owner :-)
Yeah, i have been using Cruise Control, im just worried that the car is running a bit too high, i mosty drive at 65 - 70mph, with an occasional outburst of 90mph, but i use cruise control at 65mph normally, so u think my car is ok after all ?

will dot that fuel test like Dave the taxi driver says to

Don't rely soley on what the car's fuel computer tells you - they are only an indication after all. Get he calculator out and work it out the old fashioned way.
Oh, and btw, that occasional blast up to 90mph will have a severe impact on on any fuel economy. Try changing the display over to constant fuel consumption instead of average consumption. When you see the figures go down to to single digits it might help you to ease the foot off the loud pedal a bit.

Vauxhall Omega Help, im desperate please - Dave_TD
when you say BRIMMING ? you mean actually filling it to the very top of the
fuel tank, so that you cant physically get anymore petrol in ?

You don't have to fill it right up to the fuel cap, no, the important thing for taking economy readings is to fill it up to the same place each time! i.e. Next time you fill the tank up, let the pump click off once, then put a little bit more in, then let it click off again. Then put it back, and zero your trip mileage. When you've used all that petrol up, fill the tank up with petrol in exactly the same way, let it click off once, put a little more in until it clicks off a second time. At this point you know you've put in exactly the amount of petrol you've used, not a pound more or a pound less. Then all you do is divide the miles covered by the gallons[1] used, and hey presto that's your miles per gallon figure!

[1] To convert litres to gallons, multiply litres by 4.546
Vauxhall Omega Help, im desperate please - smokie
Dtd describes exactly the method I meant. You can of course go one step further by always using the same garage, even the same pump on the same garage, so that your readings aren't affected by any slope on the forecourt. I imagine this could make a significant difference over 1 tankful but when you start building a history of data to measure over (eg 10 tankfuls) any small differences in fill levels will become insignificant.

Hello peoples, just a quick post to say i am loving my Omega ! had my first long drive yesterday coming back down the M42 and M40, and BOY does this thing shift !
anyway, to the point now, is it safe to use SUPER UNLEADED in my car, it`s a 2.5 V6 1998 S Reg Vauxhall Omega Estate....

what benefits will i notice by using this instead of standard unleaded ? i know it`s more expensive, but does it give better fuel economy ? or better performance ? is it bad for my type of engine ? or anything that you know that would help me choose

thanks again for all your advice in this forum :-)

I have bought a 1998 Omega CDX the advice you giving is absolutly sound I get 26 MPG running about and upto 35 on a run but I am a little disapointed with my Steering I had a 1996 SCORPIO 2.9 before this and had it for four years no trouble whatsoever
When I bought this CDX the spokes on the steering wheel were 10 to 4 should be 9 15 I had it tracked but they could not get it right in the end they put the wheel to 20 to 2 and when it was tracked it was ok "weird or what" other than that I cant fault the car its done 57000 does the oil have to be changed at 5000 and in the book it says 80000 for the cam belt whose right hope you can help all

thanks Bob
Vauxhall Omega Help, im desperate please - Dynamic Dave
RobertH,

How often you change the oil is up to you. Some people recommend every 5,000 miles, but personally I think they're being over cautious.

As regards the cambelt, Vauxhall dropped the 80,000 change down to 40,000 miles a while ago. It wasn't so much a case of the belt failing, but the belt tensioner and rollers. If it hasn't been changed and the car has done 57,000, I would get the belt and tensioner changed ASAP.
Vauxhall Omega Help, im desperate please - Dynamic Dave
i am petrified !! i have read most of the points on here

Wayne, what you've got to remember is people generally moan more about faults, than praise when everything's working ok. There have been several positive points made about the Omega in this forum. You don't mention whether you're buying private or from a garage, but as the one you're interested in has done 42,000 miles, make sure that it had it's cambelt changed at 40,000. If it hasn't then there might be some room for haggling the price down a little bit to pay for the work to be done.
Vauxhall Omega Help, im desperate please - Omega Owner :-)
Thanks for the advice guys, YES it is from a garage, it has had a cambelt change and does have FULL history, i only have a budget of £6000 + a trade in on my 405 TD GLX Estate, which is worth £1100, so hopefully i should get something decent with that amount ?

oh well, fingers crossed to a lovely smooth luxurious motor..

My wife has one and I just got rid of one.

Great cars. If something happened to Adriana's we would simply get another the same.
Vauxhall Omega Help, im desperate please - Jase
Not sure I agree with DavidHM's yearly fuel calculation either.

400miles/wk = 20000miles/year ish.

at 28mpg this requires around 714gallons
at 48mpg this requires around 416gallons, i.e. around 298 gallons less.

At £0.77/litre this equates to £3.50 a gallon. so total saved = 298gallons * £3.50 per gallon = £1044 ish per year.

So although this is a big saving, its not £3K on fuel alone.

Can't comment on relative costs of turbo diesel servicing vs Ecotec V6 servicing although neither are likely to be particularly cheap!

I'd say buy it. They're nice motors and estates will hold their value better than saloons.

Good luck

Sloppy typing, I should have said, over three years, which is a reasonable time to keep the car.
Vauxhall Omega Help, im desperate please - Mark (RLBS)
And by the way, as for carrying your stuff - 4 adults, child, two dogs, pushchair and all the baby bits and shopping travel in our estate all the time - loads of space.

Over the last 14,000 miles it has returned 32mpg according to the computer on a combination of motorway and country road travel - not much in town though.

Oh No! Not another Turkish Trucker!
BTW, does it have a 'dog fence', or other anti-hound measures forward of the load area?
Also, how is the baby secured/securable.
Vauxhall Omega Help, im desperate please - Mark (RLBS)
A fence at the back of the back seats, floor to ceiling. In addition the dogs are trained to lie down the whole time the car is moving.

And Camilla has her own chair in all of our cars. Which since they cost about a squizillion pounds for a good one grieves me no end.
Vauxhall Omega Help, im desperate please - Ian (Cape Town)
Sorry M, but how is the seat secured? I assume that the seats fold down, so where is it secured to the body? Or is it just secured to the seat?
Reason for asking - a bloke I know has his baby seat strapped to the upright portion of the backseat, which is a fold-down type.
I am wondering if this will not pull the whole thing forward in the event of a collision - are the release mechanisms strong enough?
I'd assume so, otherwise the bag of potatoes in the boot would knowck the seats forward in the event of a smash.
Vauxhall Omega Help, im desperate please - Mark (RLBS)
It depends where the seat is.

If it is to one side then it uses one of the inetia reel belts which is bolted to the wall of the car and the floor.

If she is in the middle, then indeed the belt goes into the back of the seat to the floor. However, bear in mind that it is still bolted to the floor and the seat can\'t fold because she is in a separate rigid seat.

Even if an adult was sat there and the seat back came free it could only let you fold over, not actually fly forward, since your butt would still be bolted to the floor.

And that\'s assuming the two rather large bolts that hold the back there actually gave way, which I would suspect is very unlikely.

However, bolted only to the back of the seat would be unwise, I think.

Whilst we\'re on the subject, given that Camilla is now 1 year old and sits in a forward facing seat, can I have her seat in the passenger seat, sat as far back as possible, given that there is an airbag ?

I, like everyone else I suspect, err on the side of caution and put her in the back - but I\'d like to get a definitive answer.

Things to remember with car seats...
1) they get grubby quickly. make sure the cover is well and truly washable, and easy to get on and off without dismantling the whole thing!
2) In summer (I believe you have one there, around about August 12-17th) make sure that the seat and buckles are protected from the sun. There is nothing worse than a sun-hot buckle on a baby.

Vauxhall Omega Help, im desperate please - volvoman
I have a Volvo 940se turbo estate and test drove a few 2.5 v6 Omegas a while back for that very reason. I measured the load space and it was bigger than the Volvo's so I guess that makes it about the biggest standard estate on the UK market.

I was impressed by the space and gadgets but not so much by the build quality. However you do get an awful lot of car for not very much money so who cares. Keep us posted on how it turns out anyway. Good luck with the new motor!

Hey NVOM, calm down, it's not even broke yet! Not much wrong with an Omega, just sit back and chill! Sure it will drink a bit more but you're a low mileage man! it will be fine, just relax ,you could have bought a new Mondeo TDci or Laguna, then you would have cause to worry!
Baz
Vauxhall Omega Help, im desperate please - Vin {P}
NVOM,

Relax. I've had one for two years now and I'm buying another for my wife. I thought about a Nissan QX or Toyota Camry, then realised that my Omega's unbeatable. Look at my other Omega love-in posts if you don't believe me.

I bought the car when I had to drive 120 miles every day. Now, three days a week I work in an office locally. On the two days when I still drive the 120 miles, I get in the car looking forward to and excited by the drive - how many cars would make you feel like that?

A few points:

1. Bar one significant fault (a crankshaft rev sensor - £140 I think) the thing just keeps on going.
2. I will replace it with another Omega
3. A mate of mine who's had one for four years is replacing it tomorrow with an identical model (after toying with the idea of an £80K Merc!!)
4. Another mate of mine with one loves it to a pretty unnatural degree.
5. My Brother-in-law is utterly, utterly satisfied with his estate - and he's never run out of space for any trip anywhere.
6. I think I'm in love with mine.
7, er, that's enough, I think.

So, buy it, drive it, fall in love with it, then rip the mickey out of the BMW brigade who have paid twice as much for half the car.

Get it serviced by a good local garage - look at the good garage guide on this site, don't go to Vauxhall. Have an oil change with semi-synthetic oil (£20 or so) every 5000 miles and it'll love you back.

You'll love it. Really. If you don't I might buy it off you for the wife.

Crankshaft Rev Sensor?
Was that to fix an intermittent sparking problem? My T reg 2.5 V6 auto often won't start and there is absolutely no spark whatsoever. The RAC towed the car to an authorised dealer who spent three days finding nothing with the car. Two days after it's return they took a reading from the key(?) which stated that the car was a 2.0l 4 cylinder! All very worrying. Then three days later the garage phoned to say that the only thing they could think of was to change the crankshaft sensor, which rather comically was what the RAC guy had said over a week previous. I love my car but I do have misgivings when it wont start and I'm left with a £7k lump of metal sitting in the drive.
Help

Mitch
Vauxhall Omega Help, im desperate please - Vin {P}
Mitch,

When the engine was hot and I stopped, if I tried to restart between about 30 and 90 minutes of stopping, it'd just turn over and not catch. After loads of cranking it would sometimes go, but the only solution was to leave the bonnet open so it cooled completely (looked very professional on customer sites, I can tell you). Then it'd start and be fine. Eventually it just refused to start at all.

At that point it passed via the AA through the doors of a franchised dealer for the first and last time. They popped their diagnostic thingy on and found the fault immediately.

I don't know if your problem is that same, but I would have thought that your dealer's kit should have spotted the fault (unless it's intermittent like mine was previous to my visit).

Hope this helps,

Wayne,

Let's compare the Omega estate you are looking at with the 1992 BMW 5 Series estate that I have owned for three years and still like very much. Both have 2.5 litre engines and the list prices when new were not that much different. My BMW has been ultra-reliable whereas it seems from reports in this forum that Omegas are *sometimes* not quite as reliable. So perhaps I should be advising you to buy a BMW rather than an Omega? ... Not so.

The faults that sometimes develop on Omegas are usually relatively minor, not engine blow-ups and the like. For a BMW estate of similar age and mileage to the Omega estate that you are looking at you would probably need to spend £10,000 more and that extra money would pay for a great deal of minor repairs to the Omega *should* they become needed.

The big Vauxhalls of the past 25 years (Royale, Carlton, Senator) were very durable and I think the Omega carries on that tradition. It is also a very comfortable car, especially the year that you are considering (later ones had a firmer suspension) and the 2.5 V6 engine is one of the best around.

I would say that 45,000 miles in 5 years is just about right, especially with FSH. It should be ready for another 150,000 miles if maintained properly.

In your position, I would buy an Omega, forget any reliability worries, and just enjoy owning and driving it. If you have lost this one, there are plenty more about. The prices at Vauxhall main dealers seem to be comparable with non-franchise outlets so I would always look there first.

David.
Vauxhall Omega Help, im desperate please - Rosanbo
On the price,

Assuming it is an automatic without leather, then $6,700 is a reasonable price.

Assuming it is a manual without leather, then $6,400 would be a resonable price.

Hello !
just got back from the Dealer in Buckinghamshire
and have BOUGHT it !
£6895 for an absolutely MINT condition, Champagne metallic, 2 owners, S registered
(November 1998) Vauxhall Omega 2.5 CDX V6 Estate with 42,734 miles, HPi checked out 100%, i drove it for the very first time, and WOW !! what can i say ? smooth, quiet, frightening in first gear, but coz i am not used to it probably ? masses of room inside so i can get all my keyboards in it, it just has to be the quietest car i have ever driven, i stopped at the lights and thought i had stalled it ! which caused histerics to the salesman,
but now i have to wait till next friday to pick it up, they gave me 12 months warranty on it, after i argued i wanted 12 and NOT 6 months standard, i then said i wanted 12 months road tax and NOT 6, which he nearly lost the sale over ! coz he wouldnt budge, so i walked away, and he called me back :-)
they are also putting a new cambelt on and servicing it aswell

and YES i am OVER THE MOON !!

Thanks for all your advice, and will let you know when i get it next friday ........oooh do i sound like a kid at christmas with a new toy aeroplane... ha ha ha ha

PS: Does anybody know how much it will cost to have the windows blackened out, as a security measure for my equipment, when i stay over night anywhere ?
and i didn`t check, coz i forgot, does the CDX model come with a cd player changer thingy mee jig ?

Just another quick note on Value, and to make you feel sick...

A car exactly the same as your car in every detail (including the colour, engine, model ) except mileage S reg registered December 1998 with 67,000 miles is going to be on auction near Manchester , tommorow?? I think. These are the given values...

Retail $5,900

Estimated auction price $3800 - $4,400 ( It will probably sell for about $4,400 - $4,600, based on my experience)

for your lower mileage you can add on $400 - $500 onto the retail price for your car.

Point is if you are prepared to be a little brave with your money you can get a car at auction for a very nice price indeed. and the money you save in your case this would be a saving of $2000 - $2500 can be used to rectify any faults that you might find with the car, however, with a keen eye you can usually spot any problems before the sale, and cars of this age and mileage are unlikely to have major faults.

I bought my last car at auction for $3000 - 2 years!! later!! it was written off and I got an insurance settlement for $4000.

Wait a minute I just found the # key! it is to the right of the aforementioned ] key. and shift of this key is now ~ This gives a new problem the key that is now # used to be the "backslash" key that is to say the opposite of / and shift backslash used to be "pipe", So I have found the # key but now I am sure I will not be able to find backslash or pipe. Blacking out the windows won't stop your stuff getting pinched. The best (and cheapest) solution is not to leave anything on show, and that includes covering things with the parcel cover.

Insurance companies do not pay out if things have been left on show as they believe you haven't taken adequate precaution.

just so i know guys, how often should i have it fully serviced ?
i know it says every 10,000 miles ?
but someone said on here i should change the oil every 5000 with synthetic oil ? should i do the same for the air filter and everything else ?
how often to change the fan belt ?
or have air con serviced on regular periods ?
if i appear stupid and thick, i am !
i just haven`t got a clue, bearing in mind i used to own a Peugeot 405 diesil estate..
i just want to make sure it is very well looked after, so i can actually get to 150,000 miles in it :-)

thanks...

10,000 miles, or annually, whichever comes sooner.
someone said on here i should change the oil every 5000

Personally, I would stick with 10,000 miles.
should i do the same for the air filter and everything else ?

Every 2 years, or 20,000 miles - whichever comes sooner for air & fuel filter. The service handbook should tell you though, along with advice on when to change plugs, etc.
how often to change the fan belt ?

How long is a piece of string. This is something that only needs changing when the belt looks worn.
or have air con serviced on regular periods ?

Run it at regular intervals (at least once every 2 weeks) In HJ's FAQ's there is some helpful advice on aircon.

And don't forget, new cambelt at every 40,000 miles.
Vauxhall Omega Help, im desperate please - Vin {P}
Glad you're happy - I thought you'd gone off the idea with some of your posts.

Get it serviced every 10K miles, with an oil change at 5K. I specify a semi synthetic but I wonder if it's worth it. Then I remember how cheap oil is versus a rebuild and I think again.

Use the air con ALL the time. It makes no noticeable difference to the fuel consumption, and keeping it on will result in (a) fewer problems with the aircon (b) quicker and better demisting.

Get the cambelt and tensioners changed when it's done 40K miles since the last change. 200 quid or so (though mine's a V6, so mine might be more) which sounds a lot till you work it out as 0.5p per mile (i.e. naff all).

Then sit back and enjoy your daily Omegasm.

Vauxhall Omega Help, im desperate please - Rosanbo
A gaurantee is only as good as the words that are used to make it up.

It would not surprise me if your gaurantee said it does not cover items which fail from normal use, through wear and tear.

So you will find that 30,000 miles down the road when your wishbone bushes need replacing, you will have to pay for them because it is normal wear and tear. However I might be wrong and you should phone them up and ask them exactly what is and is not covered, giving them examples, such as the one I just gave you, and others such as what if the rocker cover leaks due to the breather pipes becoming blocked? or the diff seal starts leaking? what requirements are there for servicing? I think you said in another post you have "a little man" who does your work for you, would the insurance cover require servicing records to be kept, if so would your "little man" be good enough or would it have to be a vauxhall dealer service.

Personally I think the idea of taking out a gaurantee is a waste of your money. After all they only gaurantee cars under 5 years old with less than 60,000 miles, they do this for a reason because these cars are unlikely to develop many faults.

You would be far better off saving your money and you will probably find you will have many years happy motoring and money in your pocket not theirs. Just don't take your car to a Vx dealer for servicing, take it to a small garage you can trust. I have a little man who is excellent, and I can watch and I even help him do certain jobs when needs be. for example my man wil charge

$25 to change a timing belt
$10 to adjust handbrake
$15 - $20 to change a set of pads and discs.

$ = pounds
Vauxhall Omega Help, im desperate please - Dynamic Dave
i didn`t check, coz i forgot, does the CDX model come with a
cd player changer thingy mee jig ?

From memory, yes. Most prob will have the Philips ccr600 in the dash, with a 6 disc multiplay in the boot. However, as it's an estate, it might have the 4 disc multiplay in the glovebox.
Vauxhall Omega Help, im desperate please - Omega Owner :-)
Thanks Vin, mine is the V6 aswell :-)
Vauxhall Omega Help, im desperate please - Omega Owner :-)
Hey Dynamic Dave, is the Philips ccr600 any good then ?
whats the wattage of it ?
and do you know which manufacturer does replacement speakers to fit straight in when i remove the standard ones that come with the car ?
oh yeah, how many speakers are actually in my model which is the CDX specification

cheers everyone, you guys are lifesavers !!
Vauxhall Omega Help, im desperate please - Dizzy {P}
Wayne, I don't understand abouit the speakers ... if the sheer quietness of the car is so appealing, as you told us, why do you want to contaminate that? I *never* have a radio/cassette on when I am driving a decent car; the sweet sound of the engine is all the entertainment I need!

Anyway, congratulations on getting the car. The Omega is one of my favourites and Champagne is a gorgeous colour. It sounds as though you might have preferred the automatic but I think the manual gearbox would be a Getrag which is possibly the best anywhere.

As always there is contradicting advice being given on oil changes. Personally I think changing at 6 months/5000 miles is good advice for many engines running with mineral oil (especially if the sump oil capacity is relatively small) but it would be a waste of money to change synthetic oil at this mileage. Not so sure about semi-synthetic as I don't have enough experience with this to make a judgement, though I would guess that it could be left for more than 5000 miles without risk of any damaging deterioration.
Vauxhall Omega Help, im desperate please - Dizzy {P}
I forgot to comment about the value of extending the warranty. A search on this forum should bring up a lot of correspondence on the subject, mostly *not* in favour if I have understood correctly. It is certainly my own view that they are not worth having, for the reasons given in previous postings.
Vauxhall Omega Help, im desperate please - Omega Owner :-)
Dizzy, yes the quietness of the car is very appealing, but....... I am a Professional Musician, and i love a good stereo system in ANY of my cars in the past, volume is not an issue for me, but quality is, cheers for your comments about the servicing etc....all the best mate

have any of you had problems with the car misting up ?

aparently coz the car is so well sealed, it steams up easy?

i no that the AIRCON should help this out though

Sounds like the pollen filter needs changing. Couple of threads mentioning the misting up of Omegas. The 1st one asking about it, then the 2nd thread mentioning that changing it cured the problem.

Just want to add my comments as a keyboard musician and someone who has done a lot in sound over the years, the Omega is an eeringly quiet motor and definitely the nicest car I've driven. I bought a 2.0 16V automatic GLS 1999 T with 95K on the clock yet its as sweet and smooth as a new model! In park or neutral I have often had to glance at the rev counter to check if the engine was running! As for CD players, I fitted the CDR500 (or is it 600?) vauxhall one, after the VDO cd player failed to recognise the traffic master system. The sound quality of the CDR500 is far superior to the cheaper VDO units and the basic factory fit speakers (there are 8 - 4 tweeters and 4 full range on the gls) are extremely good unless you want to pump up the dance music! Another nice feature of the CDR500 is speed sensitive volume, though in an omega you dont really need it! (it turns up the volume when you go faster).
The automatic is as smooth as silk though, the sports mode is a scream though as all there is a slight hesitance which you need to be aware of when overtaking. I guess the 2.5 is much better though in terms of torque and acceleration, the 3.0 must be awesome!
Mine's diamond black, and comes standard with very dark tinted glass... I've also gone over to using synthetic Mob 1 oil and am considering whether to replace the autobox oil or not. Had mine now for nearly a year (already covered 15,000 miles!) and (touch wood) it hasn't presented any problems whatsover.
I think any omega owner will say the same, they do represent superb second hand value motoring if you like that sort of thing.

NVOM, the ccr600 is fitted in my Vectra. Haven't a clue how many watts it pumps out. All the ICE in the Vectra is factory standard and I'm quite happy with the sound quality. As for the Omega, being an estate, are the rear speakers in the tailgate, like the old Carlton, or have Vaux moved them to the rear doors? If they are in the tailgate, I suspect the quality won't be that good. Most ICE manufacturers will supply replacement speakers - Kenwood, Pioneer, etc. The only downside I've found with the multiplay cd is that it is very choosey about what cdr's it plays. Some won't play at all. Some skip and jump. A lot of my earlier recordings to cdr will play without any problems, but it cannot cope with 80 min/700MB cdr's at all.
Vauxhall Omega Help, im desperate please - robert
CCR600 is 4 x 20 watts ........
Vauxhall Omega Help, im desperate please - Omega Owner :-)
Okay, have decided to have a FULL service for my new car every 5000 miles, i dont care about the expense, i just want it to last for a long time, and i think its worth it, do you all agree ?
Vauxhall Omega Help, im desperate please - smokie
No, I don't agree. Not technical here though.

That's just chucking money away, especially if you got to main dealer. (If you are considering keeping the car to 150k + then whether the service history is Vaux or backstreet wqill not make much difference).

In the MV6 I change the oil anywhere between 6000 and 10000 miles. I get the oil changes done in Kwikfit, but that's all I go there for (they are cheap, I went to synthetic Mobil 1 two changes ago - £34 incl filter and fitting).

I had one Vaux service when I bought it, since then "my little man" does "service" the car. He does just what I want him to, which always includes the main "sensible" service spec items which are out of my scope (i.e. I can check bulb operation and seat belt webbing, but not change plugs which are a bit of a pig on the MV6). I had the brake oil changed last time around, not sure if it was due, but seemed sensible to get something more "major" done when the service isn't going to cost me much.

If you have alloys, buy Green Stuff brake pads. MV6 has Irmscher alloys which look excellent until dusted over. Green Stuff, in addition to outperforming regular pads, are dust free. And, they Really Are. I can do 1000 miles without having to clean the wheels - before they would dust over in 100. (www.sejoc.co.uk/ are tyhe UK impoirters, I called them and the pads arrived two days later for Dougie to fit - about £70 for front and back IIRC, although the rears are just Kevlar rather than Green Stuff).

The radio in mine seems to have developed a small occassional problem of losing output when hot but until it gets much worse I can put up with it (just turn off for 1 min, back on, and all is OK)
There is a good chance that sooner or later you will have a reasonably large expense on the car so tuck away the money you are thinking of wasting on servicing until that day. (The tyres on mine were about to cost over £600 for the set, my tyre dealer recommended BF Goodrich as cheaper but quality alternative and they are over 20k and not yet ready for change...they were about £320).

Oh, and buy a Haynes manual even though you may not understand it - Dougie has found ti invaluable sometimes. And, of course, come back here where Robert, Vin and many others have given a wealth of info about Omegas.
Vauxhall Omega Help, im desperate please - smokie
btw pollen filter was about a tenner in Halfords, 2 minutes to change it. Did the air filter at the same time and, most importantly, spent twice as much as the filters cost me on giant bottles of AutoGlym products to maintain the MV6s good looks. That was money (and time) Really Well spent.
Vauxhall Omega Help, im desperate please - Omega Owner :-)
Where is the pollen filter located exactly? as when i pick up the car i will check if it`s ok, how do you tell if it needs changing ?
i tried that site ( www.sejoc.co.uk ) but it didnt load unfortunately

plus i would NEVER go to a Vauxhall garage, i also got a friend like Dougie in my village, he does all the servicing and is very reasonably priced, the best oil to use for my 2.5 V6 is what make and kind? theres several recommendations on here

also, have you seen the people that work in the places such as KWIF FIT ? most of them are about 18 !!
i wouldnt trust them to pump my tyre up !
i have heard some nightmare stories from people about these fast fit places, unless you find an experienced looking bloke in there, i think i will avoid them, a good point also about saving my cash, incase anything major ever does go wrong, have already started, £500 should be a good start i think ?

i will also pick up a HAYNES manual tomorrow :-)

is it also possible for me to have the standard stereo taken out and put my £700 clarion head unit in? or is the stereo the kind that is mounted into the dashboard ?

Thanks Chaps :-)
Vauxhall Omega Help, im desperate please - Mark (RLBS)
is the stereo the kind that is mounted into the dashboard

I think you need to slow down a bit.

Given that you don't know what type of stereo it is, whether or not it has a CD changer etc. etc. you'll be better to get used to the car and find out what its like before you worry about what and how you are going to change it.

I always thought I was one of the most careless buyers in the universe, but even I look at something before I buy it.
Vauxhall Omega Help, im desperate please - Vin {P}
In response to some of the posts here and elsewhere, I've replaced my pollen (cabin?) filter today (under bonnet, nearside, by the passenger bulkhead - instructions on Halfords filter are a mirror image of the real thing, five minute job in the car park at Halfords)

Well! I wondered why I wasn't getting a flow of air through the face vents. Now I know. Astounding. The old filter was black and clearly wasn't letting a lot through. Be interesting to see whether the cabin warms up better in the morning.

Total cost? £8.99.

V

Vauxhall Omega Help, im desperate please - smokie
Someone has helped with the pollen filter, def worth doing.

sejoc site seems dead - here's another www.brakeco.com/EBC%20Brake%20Pads.htm

I changed to fully synth Mobil 1 but I know there are people here who would recommend semi rather than fully. I always watch KwikFit doing the oil change as I too have an opinion on them, and also you must always ignore them touting for other work - "those tyres are a bit low sir"

Vauxhall Omega Help, im desperate please - robert
Hi Wayne,

Sorry about the late reply to your message. I?ve been on holiday and am only recently back. I addition, I had the window open for too long and lost my input. Twice! So this time I?ve cut & pasted from Word!

I?ve been an Omega owner/driver for 8 years, having had the following vehicles:

'95 GLS 2.0 Auto ? 15,000 miles
'95 CD 2.0 Auto ? 5,000 miles
'96 CDX 2.0 Auto Estate ? 5,000 miles
'96 Elite 3.0 Auto Estate ? 55,000 miles
'97 CDX 2.5 TD Auto ? 25,000 miles
'99 Elite 2.5 Auto ? 37,000 miles
'98 MV6 3.0 manual ? 41,000 miles

I?d like to make the following comments on the basis of having read the entire posting and having just sold my MV6:

The Omega is fundamentally a good car. Treat them right and they are not expensive to look after. Change oil @ 5,000 miles and cambelts/tensioners @ 40,000 and you will be ok.

Some of the earlier cars had problems yes ? but you should be ok. You need to look @ the chassis number/model year of you car rather than the reg number. The chassis number will contain a letter W, X etc. This signifies the model year. Advances were made with W (?98) and X (?99) Model year cars ? you should be ok.

The cars depreciate and you have got one at a good price. However, keep a few £ hundred to one side and you hopefully won?t need it. Most parts are not expensive ? suspension bushes/disks/wheel bearings etc. If you are unlucky you will find an expensive part to change (climate control panel) or DIS (electronic distributor unit) ? but again if you have your ?insurance fund? and the newer cars (like yours) are better. Also, don't be too worried if you get a minor oil leak from the rocker cover. Check the plug holes and only worry if you can see oil in them.

I was frankly horrified at one of the postings. I?ve always had an open relationship with my dealer so would have NOT have agreed to a £200 labour bill for bulb replacement. Maybe £10 worth of bulbs and do it yourself ? armed with a Haynes manual and help from this site ??

The car gets bad reports partly because of the numbers out there. The Royal family and many Police Forces can?t be too wrong can they?

In my 8 years and 180,000 miles I have two main gripes:

1) The door lock problem where the drivers door (or others) doesn?t quite open using the remote locking. EVERY Omega I?ve had has suffered from this in cold/wet weather and has to be opened that last fraction using the key. Might seem minor, but having lost finger nails thinking that the door will open is something that fills me with dread. Interestingly, they havn?t fixed this on the newer shape cars.

2) Vauxhall Dealers. Get several opinions for anything that doesn?t seem - well ?reasonable?. Armed with support from this site and joining the autobahnstormers(.co.uk) club will keep you sane. Joining the club will only cost £20 per year and you will get parts @ Vauxhall Trade club prices. They also have a friendly chat/forum for 6 cyl Vauxhall owners.

All in all a good car. Enjoy yours as much as I?ve enjoyed mine.

All the best ??.

Robert
Vauxhall Omega Help, im desperate please - Omega Owner :-)
Hi Robert, bought myself a HAYNES Manual today, i also phoned the garage where i bought my car, and they are fitting a NEW Pollen Filter as a goodwill gesture, also booked my car in to have the windows tinted for added security, as i do need it in my line of work, price is £364 all in, from www.tintacar.co.uk
they even collect your car, give you a courtesy one, and then redeliver it, all for the above price :-)

seems the cambelt has been changed by VAUXHALL at 40,000 miles, so thats good news, will get it changed at 80,000, the Haynes manual also says to change the oil, filter and air filter etc, at 5000 miles, which i will make sure is done, even though they comment that Vauxhall recommend a change every 10,000

heres looking forward to happy motoring :-)

Thanks

Well I am really glad I have read this thread, why. Because I have a R reg MV6 estate great car but thinking of changing it, what too, a V70!

Now I am very happy with the MV6 it goes to a local Vauxhall dealer and nothing wrong with it, had cam belt change supension bushes etc etc, just done 53k.

So why am I changing , well to young kids and some cash to pay for a new car it seems like a good idea but I really do like the Omega and read the V70 has build problems!

Thing is I like the little gadgets they do in the v70 for the kids and the biggers gadgets for the bigger kids like stonking turbos in the petrol engines, of course treated with respect.

So I am not totally sure I want to shell out for a car at the end of the day has lots of gadgets but is it really going to be that much better than the Omega?

RTFM - This is to make sure your brake light bulbs are working at the start of every journey!
Vauxhall Omega Help, im desperate please - robert
Actually - its to check the brake pedal switch. The bulbs are checked all the time while the ignition is on after the test is conducted. If you have a bulb fail you will get a different error message.

That however, is the subject of another Omega thread that you might like to read!

No, it is actually a brake light bulb test. Try taking a brake light bulb out the rear cluster and you will only get the "brake bulb fail" message when you press the brake pedal.
Same applies with the "Head/Tail light fail" message. You will only get this message when the headlights are on - providing of course a bulb has failed.

Yes, but you will only get the brake bulb fail message AFTER you have completed the brake pedal check ..... I know this as I went through a lot of pain a few weeks ago with brake lights.

If the switch doesn't work, then the brake lights won't illuminate when you press the pedal - ie, not completing the electrical circuit that checks whether the bulbs have failed or not. The "Brake light Check" on the display won't disappear from the display panel either - unless you press one of the 2 buttons on the end of the indicator stalk. If you have a blown brake light bulb and the brake light switch doesn't work, then the display won't warn you that you have a brake light bulb failure.

I bought a 1999 S 2.5V6 CDX auto estate last December. Colour Champagne. It looks very smart and everyone who rides in it has commented on how smooth and quiet it is. Up until the last few days it has been faultless but I am now getting a grinding noise, possibly from front wheels, from 20mph and a whine from the front at about 50mph. I'm no mechanic but could this be wheel bearings about to go?
I would recommend this car though - great value. Mine cost £6500 with 68,000 on the clock.

"Reason for asking - a bloke I know has his baby seat strapped to the upright portion of the backseat, which is a fold-down type.
I am wondering if this will not pull the whole thing forward in the event of a collision - are the release mechanisms strong enough?"

From 1998??
The split rear seats have active pyrotechnic bolts to lock them in the event of a collision, GM call it ALIAS.

I recently got rid of my 1996 Omega 2.0 GLS which I'd had for three years. The car was a good car to drive in all honesty but such a disaster to own!

I had a catalogue of failures and replacements that could only be attributed to poor build quality which I find poor even on a car that is cheap to buy secondhand, after all, it was nearly 20 grand new!

However, the major bugbear was with DIY work. I felt the price of independant factors parts were very high for what is essentially a large Vectra. I opted for the Omega over a 5 series BMW and would have probably paid the same price for parts.

I'm sure the 2.5 and 3.0 cars are fantastic to drive, but the experiences I've had (and the ignorance of the main dealers about these cars!) has put me off buying another.

Had my 96 Omega for nearly a year now and have to agree with u with the exception of parts prices.

Lovely to drive but have spent £1500 on servicing/repairs inc new engine in 1 year! which as u point out on a 18.5k is pretty poor.

Having said that when it goes it's a beauty, just dreading November's MOT!
