Honda CR-V 2.2 Diesel 2007 EX - Quoted a helluva lotta money to replace alternator - alitech

I am based in London.

There is a loud rattling sound coming from the engine buy. This worried me so I took it to a honda repair service. They asked for £57 to do a thorough check and came back with a £908 quote to replace the alternator. Is this right? Seems excessive doesn't it?

I think they identified the correct problem as a couple of days ago, the car battery did seem to run out, but i eventually started and is working ok, but the sound is most distressing. Honda say its on its way out and can go any day. They will need to order the part and call us in for a day and get it fixed.

How much is the part and what should the labour be like? Can I do this myself? Never did anything like this but this is too much money. I am sorry for the noob question.

Can you recommend any other repair shops in London that don't take the p***?

Can I buy the part somewhere and get a local mechanic or mobile repair service come and fix this at my house? I need to save money, I need to shave off more than half of this £908 bill.. its too much.

On another note, there is a annoying squeak that comes from the clutch when you press down, its been there for a few months, I dont think its show stopper but very annoying. Honda say the whole assembly needs to be replaced which is an extra £500!!!

The answer is a very simple one - Don't go to a Honda main dealer! find a good independant garage or Auto electrician and ask them for a price to replace the alternator.

Happened on my CRV 2 diesel in 2010 I think it was. I was on holiday and needed the car fixed ASAP. Was towed to Honda dealer in Hereford. Cost just short of £600.

A local specialist said they could repair it (bearings) and do the job for maybe £300 but it would have taken a few days. I hired a car for a day and the Honda dealer did it when the part came the next morning.

I thought £600 was plenty.

Are you sure this is not a fault with the crankshaft pulley/damper?Not uncommon on these to break up and give similar noises.

Thanks for your replies guys. Appreciate it.

I definitely agree, I need to find a local garage who would be able to do it, just need to ensure that they are good and are not going to mess anything up. I dont really know how to validate good garages though. I was looking at some mobile mechanic services in South London, found a few here

Yes - I thought it wouldn't be too expensive a job when the alternator failed last week on my Fiesta 1.4Tdci, but I couldn't afford a labour bill as well as £110 for a new alternator, so I set to doing it in my back yard. Headlamp out, jack up, wheel off, cover off serpentine belt, belt off, alternator bolts out and alternator off its brackets.

OK, that was the easy bit. Getting the alternator out of the engine bay took another day's work! That's where your labour costs come in. I had to tap my local garagiste, Oily Mick, for advice about taking pipes off the power steering pump, followed by removing various bolts, taking the heat shield off the exhaust manifold, bending the dip-stick pipe back to the manifold, and finally getting my angle-grinder out and cutting a chunk out of the plastic engine cross-member before the alternator could be wiggled out. Horrendous job. Oily Mick agreed with me and says he doesn't like doing them. And of course, his customer wouldn't be happy to find a chunk had been cut out of his cross-member, so Mick would have to take the power steering pump off completely, but that doesn't help much because the pump bracket is still in the way!

On Mick's advice, I've taken the alternator to a firm in Bury where the helpful Simon will strip it and see if it's repairable at a lower cost than an exchange unit.

Putt it back in 'should' be easier!

Good luck MrEckerslikefromRamsbottom

This does not seem something I would touch personally. Not good with cars

Worrying thought about e-bay.Will they send a "virtual mechanic" through the internet to replace the alternator if it fails during the warranty period?

Do a google search for Alternatorman.
Honda wanted over £500 for my 06 Accord Diesel.
Alternatorman supplied a recon for £140 exchange.
Yours being a 07 it's almost definetly the same alternator.

It's not the crankshaft pulley that fails on these,
It the sprag clutch in the alternator pulley.
Which causes the noise it's a cross between a rattle and a
clicking noise.

Try SAC in Coventry for the alternator. they gave me great service when I needed one about 18 months ago. They built up a recon unit whilst I drove over to them on a Saturday morning. I'm sure they do a shipping service.

Then either get a local garage or a mobile chap to fit it for you (mobile obviously means he could do it at your place of work - so to all intents and purposes you're never even off the road).

Of course, you need to be sure of what you require. It is defo the alternator?

Going to the main dealer for something like this on a 7 year old car is just a recipe for making you a lot poorer.

<edit> there must be places like SAC in London though. Try searching alternators on Yell and ring a few up.
