On a recent trip to Cornwall, whilst going down a steep hill the box made a strange noise (like a loud bang and a jolt )is this the box slipping ? due to the gradient of hill. This happened once before on Porlock Hill.
On the way back,I used the ice setting which deletes the use of first gear when going down a couple of steep hills. This appeared to work.
Any ideas?

How fast were you travelling? Were you slowing down? How steep was the hill? Did the bang happen just after pressing or lifting off the pedal?

Most likely 40mph, foot was covering brake,it was a very steep hill. The noise appeared just after lifting off.Once this happened the box lost 1st & 4th gears, the only way to get them back was to restart the car. The car was then fine for the rest of the journey. (300 miles)
By the way the car is a 2001 Y reg & only 12000 miles.

Take it to the dealer as it is still in warranty, the box could have been overheating.
This may be a similar jerkiness problem that has affected C5 owners.
