Volkswagen Golf 2012 - Irregular rear pad wear - steve343
The car was serviced by vw at 30,000 in Jan 2014. Three weeks ago the rear brakes were grinding and one pad was found to be down to the metal whereas the other 3 had 7 mm left.
What is up with the car? The garage want to check the pressure to the rear pads. Is this something that should have been picked up during its last service. The service sheet shows all pads having 7 mm and I find it hard to believe that one pad has been shredded in 3,000 miles.
Any comments gratefully received.

Uneven pad wear is not unusual. It's perfectly possible to get a soft or hard pad. Failing that you could have a problem with a caliper or seized slides.

I would concur.

Mostly likely it's seized. Hence not been noticed at the last service

No doubt this will be a warranty repair on a 2012 car.

If you have had metal to metal contact, then it is likely you need new discs. If the damage is very light, they may be able to skim the discs lightly.

Make sure you get a thorough record of work carried out and that it includes cleaning an lubricating the slide pins properly (assuming that's the cause). Also ask for the brakes to be put through an MoT test and ask for the printout (how else would they know the repair was safe and effective without testing??). Check for drag figure on both sides (under about 10kgf is ok) and for brake balance (less than 25% for an MoT).

Anyone else annoyed for the owner, what have the techs been doing at service time? the usual complete brake service comprising of squinting through the wheel at the fraction of visible pad and squirting brake cleaner in the general direction? that it?

bah.

The only people i trust to service my brakes properly is my old MB indy, always fully stripped cleaned lubed, otherwise its DIY.

That's the problem with VW servicing, I can't recall ever seeing a scheduled service list state that the wheels have to be removed to inspect the brakes (including those that have rear drum brakes).

It's not the mechanic to blame, but VW themselves. They set out the repair operations on the service checklist which is downloaded on an individual car basis from their dealer intranet so if that list doesn't say to remove the wheels for a full inspection of the brakes, they won't. Plus, the allowed time for carrying out servicing has dropped lower and lower for which I blame the fleet car companies !

Time was you used to get around 2.5 hours for a full service, now it's around 1.2 hours so it's basically halved for supposedly the same service operations. The fleet companies have told car manufactures how much they will pay for servicing/repair costs, so they in turn reduced the labour times. When the repairs etc were found to be regularly going over the allotted time, they then dropped some of the service operations to fit it into the new time frames.

This in turn has filtered down to the retail customer as VW (and other manufacturers), hence the loss of removing wheels etc on scheduled servicing.

Same problem a while back.

Now I go and have "free" brake checks in national chains...KF will take the wheels off and the calipers and check operation and tell you iff it needs doing. I kept mum when the techie did it last year and he came and shoewd me the pad that was worn to nothing, allowed them to do it £65 inc and got lifetime warranty.

Most main dealers will not do a full brake check unless you specifically request, and will charge an hour plus parts at main dealer prices.

I started as an apprentice in a Vauxhall dealership in 1980 and worked there till March 1995. By the late 80s they were serviced every 9,000 miles, with odd numbers (9k, 27k etc) being small services, and even numbers (18k, 36k etc) being a full service. The time allowed was 1.2 hours and 1.5 hours respectively. If you did the job properly there was no way you could do it in that time, so cutting corners was the only was to make bonus.

I too used to work at a Vauxhall main agents. Everyone used to "love" doing the fleet car servicing. High mileage service it was called, got a massive .70 hours to do it in !!!!

Needless to say most of the schedule was overlooked and the boot was rarely opened to check the spare etc. As one old timer used to say "oil & filter, kick the tyres and p**s in the water bottle"

Was a shock to the system when I later worked in a couple of Indy garages. Got some decent times for servicing, and, more importantly, took wheels / drums off and did a proper inspection / service on them too.

on which wheel was the pads on ? if it was the rear near side then the next question is is the car fitted with asr or esp and do you drive in a area with alot of roundabouts
if the the answer is yes to both then therein may lie the cause
the esp will apply the brake to nearside rear wheel on the roundabouts to stablise the car

if it on either of the rear wheels have your hand brake cables checked for kinks as this would cause the brakes not to release fully and wouldnt show up on brake pressure test
