Peugot 307 cc 2.0 HDI. 2006 - Hdi missing a beat and sounding like diesel knock - dicky22
Hi, I've recently had a new dual mass flywheel and clutch fitted by a local garage and since then the car tends to miss a beat and sounds like diesel knock ( intermittent ). The car starts and runs, idles without a flicker, then when pulling away I start experiencing the stutter.
It shows no warning lights and has been back to the garage twice and shows no fault codes. This stutter occurs at all speeds.
Any ideas and possible solutions gratefully received.

I would suspect a dodgy injector, it will knock if they are dripping neat fuel in.

Ok cheers, would that also account for the engine stuttering. It's going back to the garage so hopefully they'll get the injectors tested.

If the power is down on one cylinder it will make it run unevenly.

I'd get it checked again. If it was running fine before then there's a chance they've not connected something. There's a sensor, cam or crank (can't remember which) which is supposed to be removed from the housing if you have a new clutch, otherwise it can get damaged.

No disrespect to the garage or their equipment but one thing which keeps me busy are garages that use generic scan-anything code readers. If they didn't use Lexia and Peugeot Planet / Diagbox, use someone that does.

This map is a list of Pug owners with the equipment who do it for beer money, is there anyone close to you?

Ok.
Here's the outcome, after another round of diagnostics without any sound result, one mechanic asked what diesel I was using, my reply was the regular brand from either of local superstore.
His advice was to run the engine to near empty and try the more expensive branded diesel, since following that advice it's like driving a different car.
He thinks that regular diesel has more bio products added to reduce immisions and that hdi's don't particularly behave with it.
Saved me a bill for new injectors.
Cheers

Don't know about new diesel specs but I have been running diesels since 1959 and have never noticed any difference between fuels - but engines and fuels have changed a lot in the last few years.

I've had many Peugeot diesels over the years (205, 206, at least four 306s, 307, 407) and I do agree, some don't like supermarket fuel. The old 306 would burn anything you put into it, but the 2007 307 and the 2006 407 I owned felt flat and lifeless on supermarket fuel. And a few other 407 owners have said the same.

But, its all down to personal experience and very unscientific because no two journeys can ever be the same, due to traffic, temperature and even the way the driver behaves.

I'm quite lucky in my area because Shell fuel is within a penny or two of supermarket fuel prices, and they're actually on my driving route, I'd be going out of my way to a supermarket.

If using a different fuel made that much difference I would guess that a generous shot of diesel conditioner (injector cleaner) would too. I can usually feel a better 'throttle' response after putting it in my 207. I don't usually put in supermarket fuel, but SWMBO does.
