Vauxhall Zafira Tourer - Vauxhall Zafira 1.4 Turbo - eddy63

Im thinking of buying a used Vauxhall Zafira Tourer, I only do about 10.000 miles a year, so im looking at the 1.4 turbo. I know Honest John said the 1.4 turbo is a good engine. What I want to know is it good going up big hills with a full load. I don't want a car that struggles, but I also don't want a deisel because I never do the miles to make it worth while. It would only do 600 mile round trip once a year when we go on holiday. So any advice would be great.

The 1.4T develops something like 138 BHP IIRC, but more importantly has decent torque (pulling power) from relatively low revs, so it will be more than adequate for hills and loads. Just don't expect the "turbo" badge to mean lightning quick acceleration.

Test drive a couple to see if they fit the bill for you.

Thanks for your information I will test one. Just that the stop start version is only £140 road tax compaired to my old 1.8 Zafira which is over £250 and even the new 1.8 is still around £200.

read the USA/canadian chevrolet forums as their models equivalent have had this 1.4 turbo engine for about 18 months- 2 years now, in the sonic saloon (aveo with boot). the zafira is a bit heavier than the sonic but you can get a general idea from that, google "sonic 1.4 turbo problems" "sonic ownersforum" quite instructive!

Ok will do, but Honest John did say the 1.4 turbo is a good reliable engine.

When I was in Toronto last year the local chevrolet dealer said the 1.4 turbo "moved" !

Just want a reliable engine with lower road tax. I do think the old 1.8 is old and past it, though Vauxhall is bringing out a stormer of an engine in the form of 1.6T SIDI this will come with two options 176-8ps or 200ps with the last capable of making the Vauxhall Zafira tourer do 140mph, this MPV will be in the showrooms about April. This is part of Vauxhall/Opel five year engine replacement program, so it could be the the death of the 1.8 petrol and maybe the old 1.6.

Have tried this engine in the Meriva and it does shift.

Yes the Meriva does look look like a nice Mini Mpv, I need the extra seats when the kids are off school. I know the Ford S Max is a better car, just too expensive even used. I can get a better deal for a low milage Zafira Tourer, and as I dont do high milage the 1.4 fits the bill.
