Nissan Micra K12 - Car isn't starting - LinuxGeek

We've got a 52 plate Nissan Micra SVE and its not starting up. This has happened the second time in past week or so. The first time I jump started it and it started working. But yesterday I left it for jump start for at least 10 minutes but nothing is happening. When I tried to turn it on yesterday there was nothing on the dashboard. Even hazard lights weren't coming on. So I thought it was the battery. So once I got the jump leads connected to my Honda Accord the dashboard lights and hazard lights came on but when I was turning the key there was nothing. Starter motor isn't even kicking in.

My brother-in-law thinks its the immobiliser. I'm not a car expert so I'd really appreciate any advise. Thanks

Do any lights at all come on i.e. sidelights, headlights etc, if not you have a poor connection on your battery leads somewhere, possibly the earth lead from the battery to the engine/gearbox.

Yes lights are coming on now. I tried hazard lights and the internal light and they came on once it got some power from the other car.

Towed the car to a local mechanic and he's diagnosed it as an immobiliser. Rang Nissan and they're seriously taking the p***. Firstly they can't book the car in until the end of the month and secondly they want to book the car in for minimum 2 hours and they're going to charge £118/hour.Why do they want to book the car in for 2 hours and not for an hour initially? Surely if the fault is found within an hour there's no need for them to charge us 2 hours diagnostic.

What's your opinion on this?

Also spoke with another independent comnpany and they've said it could be "ignition barrell". They've said because key is turning in the ignition it can't be immobiliser. I'm confused.

If you are only getting power to your lights when connected to another vehicle I would suspect that your battery is duff.

Try an auto electrician, they usually know what they are doing and are likely to be cheaper than a garage because they specialise in electrics and should find the problem quicker.

Peter thanks for your prompt reply. Car has got fairly new battery, its only few months old. It goes flat fairly quickly though so you've got a point but once connected to another car it seems to charge but doesn't hold the charge for very long time.

From your description of the problem and as you say its has a new battery then I would suspect it has a duff alternator or some fault in the charging circuit.

Connect a voltmeter across the battery, it should read about 14.4 volts with the engine running, if its much less as Collos says you have a duff alternator

Peter car isn't starting up so can't do that.

Thanks for providing the link "elekie&a/c doctor". I've read through all the posts but there's no solution anywhere to the problem. Could it be "Ignition switch"? :-(

I've left it with another mechanic today so let's see what he comes up with! I'm dreading taking it to Nissan because they'll quote silly money which might be more than the value of the car.

Can you measure the battery voltage with nothing switched on ( ignition off) and again when trying to crank engine.

Ignition off should be about 12.2 to 12.6 V ( this not really important)

When cranking if less than 10V shows battery either discharged or faulty. Can you give battery a good charge ?

First of all thanks to everyone who tried to help.

Car was fixed yesterday by my regular mechanic. It was "ignition switch" which was the culprit. Labour including parts was £60 much cheaper than Nissan's diagnostic costs, let alone them fixint it. I'm hoping someone else with the same problem would find this helpful.

Just to add another potential solution to this issue-

I had a similar problem yesterday with my 2003 Micra.

The battery went completely flat, then when trying to jumpstart it the electrics came on, but the engine wouldn't turn over. Also to begin with there was a weird clicking sound coming from the dash.

The dashboard lights coming on were: Airbag, battery and immobilizer (key in car icon).

Called out Green Flag to sort it out or tow me to a garage, and they thought it was pretty weird too.

They disconnected the battery from the car and charged it from their van with jump leads. Apparently disconnecting the battery from the car for 5 mins gives the car a chance to reset its electrics.

5 mins later, reconnected the battery and hey presto it started!

The breakdown guy put it down to an immobilizer fault, and the battery disconnect trick seemed to fix it.

Just thought I'd share this, in case it helps anyone else!

Thanks, Dave

There was an immobiliser recall on these which caused the battery to drain.
