Vauxhall Corsa 1.4 05 model - Engine revving after battery change - Robin the Technician

Hi All,

At the w/end I changed the battery on my Daughters 1.4 Corsa. Started it up and it ran fine. Today, she started it up and it was revving like mad. I checked everything and all was ok. I decided to revert back to the old battery to see if it made any difference - it didn't. However, after the car had warmed up it decided to behave itself and idle. My Daughter had looked up the problem and one of the suggestions was a stuck idle control valve. I duly sprayed some WD40 around an area that looked like a valve to see if it would help. The car now starts & idles fine - but when you drive it it is very underpowered and there is a light on the dash of a car with a spanner through it. I assume the poor performance and the illuminated light are connected. Would disconnecting the battery and re-connecting it clear the problem?

Any advice and guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Update: On one of the Vauxhall forums someone said to hold the brake & accellerator down then turn the ignition on. The car with the spanner flashes a number of times which gives a clue to the fault. Mine is P1120 .... any clues. The forum also mentioned a UEC (any clues what this is) and also a TPS (again a clue?).

Anyone got any ideas??

Thanks

Firstly,Corsa C and D models do not have an idle control valve. All models are fly-by-wire with a motorised throttle flap. The P1120 refers to a throttle pedal sensor fault, but I can't see how changing the battery could affect this.I would disconnect the battery for 10 mins and retry and drive the car to relearn basic values.hth

Hi, i presume fky by wire means it does not have a throttle cable? I disconnected the battery for about 4 hours and then reconnected it. Started it up and the car with the spanner through it is still lit!! Is it worth buying a code reader/resetter? Theres one on ebay for 20 quid + p&p but its for OBD2 & EOBD. Any idea if that is suitable for the Corsa?

Thanks

Have you got a lap top?

If yes then buy one of the clone copy version of "tech II".

and reset the throttle values,I always do after battery change on Vaux.

Update: After a short run it settled down - even though the engine warning light was still on. Came to use it Monday (after I'd ordered the EOBD 2 tool) and the warning light went off!!! Checked it all out with my newly arrived tester and all is now well.

Thanks to those who offered advice, much appreciated.
