I have a Y reg new shape Mondeo 1.8LX 5dr hatchback for sale. I've been advertising it for about 6 weeks now, i've had it on the web on Auto Trader website, Loot website, a local classifieds website, and in print in the Northwest Auto Trader and my local weekly rag. I was originally asking £7995, but have reduced it to £7750.
The problem is i've had barely any responses apart from those annoying agencies who want £80 for the privilege of trying to match a buyer to your vehicle.

The vehicle is a July 2001 Y reg new shape Mondeo 5dr hatchback, it is usual LX spec, 4xEW 6xAB ac etc, etc, metallic, has non standard ford alloys, has only just turned 20,000 miles with an up to date service record. It is also taxed til July and has 18 months of Ford Direct warranty left up to Aug 04.

My local Ford dealer is still advertising the same vehicles, without alloys or tax, but obviously with warranty, for as much as £8995.
The question I have is am I expecting too much money?
Used new shape Mondeo fair price? - Keith S
According to What car on line your car is worth £8218 privately and £7531 part - ex.

Dealer price is £8626.

I would stress the fact it is a new model. At first I looked at Y reg and dismissed it as old shape without reading further. Maybe most people do that. Just say "2001 new shape" or something
Used new shape Mondeo fair price? - Martin Devon
Does the LX have ABS and just out of interest, why the non-standard alloys on this car? Only asking.

Regards
Used new shape Mondeo fair price? - DavidHM
All new Mondeos have ABS, thankfully.

£7750 sounds like a fair price but unfortunately they're not hard to find in a dealer like that. The problem is that you have more rights and more facilities (like part ex) with a dealer, so unfortunately recent, large cars like this tend to be a hard sell.

All you can do is sit it out. I'd offer you £7500 myself if I could, I think they're great cars.

For the second time today can I carry out a small hijack, rather than creating a new thread?

Can someone advise what a 36k V 1999 Focus 2.0 Ghia might end up costing me at auction?

Used new shape Mondeo fair price? - DavidHM
Depends on who's there on the day, what the colour and condition are like, but I would expect it to be £5,500 or so. Avoid purple and gold especially, but you knew that. Supersites will start them off at around £6,000 and £7,000 from a main dealer (or more, if they are doing generous main finance/part ex offers) is possible.

Thanks for the feedback so far,
I appreciate that it'd sell at £6950 Honest John, but I really don't want let her go for as little as that, I'm starting up in business with the proceeds of the sale, so the more the better obviously.
I've put an ad in the classified section if anyone wants a butchers, the car is two owners by the way, I didn't mention that earlier. I bought it in Aug 2002 as a Ford Direct vehicle with 14,500 miles on the clock.
To answer a query, the non-standard alloys were part of a Ford dealer promotion when I bought the car, they're the Ford 7 spoke type, and they do set the car off nicely, they certainly look better than the dodgy LX wheeltrims.
And yes as someone has already said, ABS is standard on new shapes.
I've even fitted the footwell light bulbs!

Used new shape Mondeo fair price? - Wales Forester
Andy22 it's Pepper Red metallic and i'm in Flintshire, N.Wales, about 7 miles from Chester. The wheels are the official Ford ones yeah.

But are you going to give the potential buyer a warranty, fully valet, service, and wash/wax the car? That's why dealers are knocking them out for 8k plus.
Used new shape Mondeo fair price? - Wales Forester
Dave,
The car has 18 months Ford Direct warranty remaining.
It is fully valeted.
Taxed for 6 months.
Had it's first service at 14600 miles instead of 12500 (first keeper), now has 20000 miles under its belt, so not due for a service until 27100 miles.

I cannot believe people would rather pay more and get less from a dealer.
What more can i say!
Used new shape Mondeo fair price? - Dynamic Dave
The car has 18 months Ford Direct warranty remaining.

Bought my Vectra at 10 months old. 26 months warranty still left on it, but the Vauxhall dealer still "gave" me 12 months Network Q warranty. Apparantely the Net Q warranty is better than the manufacturers warranty.
It is fully valeted.

It still won't stop a reputable garage doing the same before a resale.
Had it's first service at 14600 miles instead of 12500 (first
keeper), now has 20000 miles under its belt, so not due
for a service until 27100 miles.

The garage would still service it before flogging it on to the next punter, regardless of when it was serviced. The dealership I use do so anyway. Not nessesarily a full service, but they would still change the relevant fluids and give it a once over.
I cannot believe people would rather pay more and get less
from a dealer.

What makes you think people would get less from a dealer than buying private? Buying from a dealer gives the inexperienced better peace of mind if things were to go wrong.
Used new shape Mondeo fair price? - Wales Forester
Your point regarding the warranty?!

You asked would it be valeted, the answer is yes!

Main dealers will not service or do an oil change if a car isn't even half way between service mileages, the only time this would happen would be when 12 months had elapsed between services, without the recommended service interval mileage being reached.

I was referring to the alloys and road tax included in my price, when I spoke of people getting "less" from a dealer.

The car is at present faultless, were a fault to occur, the new keeper would be able to go to any Ford Main Dealer and have it rectified on warranty.

I guess then the Main Vaux dealer I use is unique then. They always service, and valet a car before resale. Regardless of the condition or mileage from the person who traded it in.

You are missing the point, your car could have gold plated pin stripes, whale tail spoiler, and numerous other bolt on accessories that cost you a fortune to fit. Just because yours has alloys, it doesn't make it worth more than book price. Some people don't want to buy a car with alloys and all the toys, bells and whistles.
The car is at present faultless,

But who would the potential buyer tend to believe, you or a dealer if that were quoted to them?
were a fault to occur, the new keeper would be able to go to
any Ford Main Dealer and have it rectified on warranty.

Granted, but if it were a minor fault, say the wheels were out of balance, or the tape player didn't work properly - things that the warranty doesn't cover. If the buyer were to come back to you and complain; would you rectify it for them? A dealer more than likely would rectify them free of charge to keep the customer happy, and so that they would also come back in the future.

Buying private, and buying from a garage, all have their advantages and disadvantages in one capacity or another.

The fact remains that you are trying to sell a car that isn't in short supply. If you outprice yourself, people will simply go elsewhere and buy it cheaper from another private seller around the next corner. You will never be able to sell it on for what a dealer could sell it for (reasons already given). You've got to stop looking at garage prices and comparing it with what you're trying to sell it for. The garage will win every time.
Your first post mentioned you've had little interest so far, so that says to me that you've overpriced it. The 2nd hand market is dead now that brand new prices have plumeted. I know it's hard to accept, but try dropping the price a little.
Used new shape Mondeo fair price? - Wales Forester
I happen to think that dealers do add a few quid for non standard equipment, so why shouldn't I??

Used new shape Mondeo fair price? - Blue {P}
Actually, our local dealers had a selection of Focuses on the forecourt, all at the same price, except one of them had the CD player with steering mounted controls, the others all had tape players and double the mileage.

There was no price difference, they just pile 'em high and sell 'em all at the same price.

Guess which one we bought. :)

>>
I believe you've hit the nail on the head here. If it had its first service 2000 miles late then, correct me if I'm wrong but, the the terms of the Ford Warranty have not been met rendering it invalid. I would be a bit doubtful about buying the car in these circumstances, especially when there are so many others to choose from. Also metallic red is not such a popular colour and as for the dealer prices, well if you are prepared to haggle, you can get up to 20% of the sticker price. I would sell at about £7300, HJ's price plus £400 extra for the alloys, using the fact that they are Ford alloys as a selling point.
Used new shape Mondeo fair price? - Wales Forester
kith,

I purchased the car in Aug 2002 with 14610 miles on the clock, it had been serviced at 14600 miles or there abouts by the Ford Direct conditioning centre on arrival from it's first keeper. The warranty is very much valid.
Apparently i'm talking b******* wanting extra for the alloys, tax and remaining warranty!
Used new shape Mondeo fair price? - Tony44
The new model is quite a large car. I wonder how many people think the 1.8 engine a bit inadequate? Not trying to put a damper on your efforts to sell - I think the price you are asking is very fair. Another thing which may put people off is the 'Ford Direct' bit. I've always looked upon Ford Direct cars as a great buy if you intend running it forever - good warranty, breakdown cover, etc, but trying to sell one on after a couple of years may be more difficult than with a 'private owner' history.

I don't mind someone telling me I'm wrong as I've been tempted to buy Ford Direct myself.

Peter - I mean this to be helpful, not criticism...

The dealers will no doubt be asking well over a grand more than you're going to get, not only to cover warranty (longer than is left on yours?) and VEL etc but also to allow for either a discount for a) haggling b) no p/ex c) overvaluing a p/ex to match the buyers unrealistic expectation... I'd guess you aren't planning to do those, so I'd suggest not being led astray by 'screen' prices at the dealers. All they tell you is how much they'd LIKE - not how much they'll get! Hence YOUR screen price was £7750 - what's your real price? Needs to be rather lower than theirs to get a buyer... as HJ says, it'll sell at £6950. As you've discovered, it won't at £7750. Not sure what business you're going in to, but if it was the motor trade you'd be familiar with 'your first loss is your cheapest'...bite the bullet, good luck with the business, make up the loss that way!

Just my opinion, but maybe worth considering?

Neil
Used new shape Mondeo fair price? - neil
Also ... just checked your link to free ad. '6xAB' doesn't mean a lot to me - maybe it does to others, but maybe not... and the mobile phone number wouldn't inspire confidence... Also - you've put 'priced to sell' ... shouldn't that be 'to NOT sell' as you've already discovered? Or £6950? ;-)
Used new shape Mondeo fair price? - Wales Forester
I know how the dealers work, I also know that at £6950 someone would snatch my hand off!

However, I don't think £7750 ono is unreasonable, i'd take £7500 but there's no way on this earth that i'm gonna drop to £6950.

Used new shape Mondeo fair price? - Wales Forester
6xAB is 6 x Airbags and there is a landline number if people read the ad properly.
Used new shape Mondeo fair price? - neil
Thanks for explaining your 6xAB. Unless they're extras, why mention them? You haven't said 4xWA*- but I bet it's got them! And yeah, there's a landline - I had to look twice, my initial attention was to the mobile number in the body text - and I guess others might have same reaction? Maybe its just me? On the other hand I wouldn't write an advert that I had to rely on people reading carefully - I'd want it to jump off the page!

Cheers

Many factors govern the price difference. Although those motors you're comparing your car price with is £3000 more, but only 2 months younger than yours; is the mileage lower than yours? Is the condition better? Is the colour more favourable? Fewer owners? etc. On top of that, they might knock off £500 for a cash deal with no trade in. They might offer over the odds for the trade in. There's the warranty they'll put on the car (yes I know yours already has one) that'll be ITRO £500. It will be serviced; another £200. It will more than likely have an HPI check. Dealer overheads, a tank of fuel, a gift of flowers if it's a female purchaser - the list goes on.
i'm sorry, but as a couple of people have said, it's not
unfairly priced,

But the rest have told you that you've overpriced it!

Okay - you know what its worth to you, just as others know what its worth to them. I'd be very interested in what you eventually do get - I hope its more than the £6950 I suspect it will be! You've put £7750 ono - which means you'll get starting bids on £6750 to maybe £7k, if you're right about people snatching your hand off at £6950, surely? I mean - what would YOU regard as a near offer on £7500? Your phone has probably never stopped...?

In the past, I have always felt that I paid over book price for a car and sold it for too much under.

If I was you I would stick to my guns and wait for a buyer. It may take time, but you might eventually.

Once someone actually turns up to look at the car, they are obviously interested, therefore haggle assertively.

Why not see what Parkers and Glass's guide price the car at?

Neil is correct about screen prices, but what about book prices?

Peter, it's basic supply and demand. If you haven't sold at the price you are asking, you are either not getting the ad through to the target audience or the price is too high. End of story. What you think the car is worth is, with respect, irrelevant. Anything is only worth what a punter is willing to pay, reagardless of what car price guides say. As the name implies, they are only guides. Perhaps some peculiarities in the car markey locally to you is depressing the prices of private sales.
Off topic a bit, but a similar situation applies with wage rates. A good case for higher nurses salaries, as recruitment is difficult, but no case for higher fireman's wages, as recruitment is easy.

And it sounds as though Tony is too kind to make the point which is that a car about 1 year younger from a main dealer with all the xtras is only £1.5K more than PP is asking for a private sale. At those sorts of prices, PP I wouldn't be risking my money buying a private sale car and that to me explains why you haven't had many bites. Don't forget that at whatever price, it's going to have the remainder of the manufacturer's warranty (18 months) which is transferrable, regardless of the Ford Direct warranty or not. And two years' RAC is only a couple of hundred quid. Take off a grand for dealer profit margin and £400 for the extra warranty/RAC package, and you're left with £7,500.

If there's so little interest, I'd even consider auctioning the thing with a £7k reserve. You never know.

I really think there are two potential problems: on the one hand that the car is the wrong kind of car for a private sale, and secondly that the car has had two owners - leave that out until they know why you're selling. An 18 month old car that 2 people have wanted to get rid of screams LEMON until you know more - and many people won't take the trouble to find out.

That's not what I mean. What I do mean is that, if I were looking for a recent Mondeo, I'd look at supersites, auctions, even franchise dealers - anywhere but in Free Ads. I might find one on the AutoTrader website, but I wouldn't go looking there first.

Within 40 miles of me (London) there are 9 new Mondeos for sale privately. The cheapest is a 51 plate at £8650 (way too high). Dealers have 50 that are cheaper than that. Given that the majority of these cars will be sold with p/x and finance facilities, it's just plain tough to shift them.

Used new shape Mondeo fair price? - J Bonington Jagworth

But aren't you assuming that everyone is like you. I venture to suggest that the majority of the buying public are not. I'm a private buyer and not at all bothered by repmobile status. The car has good reviews, its roomy and gets me from A to B; lots around, presumably lots of spare parts later on down the line. Not many cars in its category do not have a repmobile status.

I'm quite happy spending my dosh on that sort of car, and I've taken time to research the market; and most of the people I know, looking for a car, will head off down to the local garage and stick with a make they know...often Ford.

splodgeface
Used new shape Mondeo fair price? - googolplex
and further to this, lots around does not necessarily mean low demand - it could mean that there are far too many companies laying off staff who had a car for 1 year or so; and it could mean that Ford made loads of them, flooded the market with cheap deals and these are now coming back onto the market as used buys.
Also most people I know stick with a car till it falls apart, and then look for a new car, rather than changing every few years.
