Ford Focus - Focus 2.0 tdci Titanium buying advice sought - Crashcourse

Hi all, for my very first post on these forums, I'm looking for some sound buying advice.

My son has put a refundable deposit on a 2009 Ford Focus 2.0 tdci Tianium, taxed, MOTd, FSH and 86,000 miles. Fully loaded, with sat-nav and cosmetically ok....£5700.

I know nothing about Fords and would appreciate any thoughts on the durability of components and the reliability of that model in general.

Thanks in advance - Andy

In my experience Fords are very reliable and durable, the problem can be the dealers, getting then to do anything under warranty can be a battle, the one your son is buying is out of warranty so that is not an issue.

Between 1999 and 2010 we had a Ford on the drive, 3 in total. One was kept 6 years, one 5 years and the other 3 years. In that time we had front suspension bushes (Ford consider these diposable items), a heater problem and a new auxilliary drive belt (fan belt in old language). Never had a break down and servicing was reasonable.

At 86,000 miles cars can start to get costly, if it was me I would buy one with fewer toys and fewer miles. At 86,000 miles the DPF (diesel particulate filter) could be getting near needing a replacement and they are over £1000. The car will also have a DMF (dual mass flywheel) and if that fails its another huge bill.

I love diesels but if your son only does a small mileage tell him to buy a petrol, a high mileage used diesel used for small trips will probably end up being a money pit. If he does a big mileage tell him to buy a newer diesel.

Nothing too wrong with these. This car will be fitted with the Peugeot engine,as fitted in other models. At this mileage you will also be looking at a cambelt change at 100k.Agree with above,if you dont need a diesel, better off with a petrol.Even the 1.6 engines (petrol)are ok.hth

If its the same as PAS its the same engine and ancilliries the cam belt is 150k most of these cars do 200k with no problems it all depends how its been looked after in its early life if its been a comapany car you can bet its had the very minium service if at all.

I find owners forums to be a mine of information, perhaps you might want to be asking the questions and seaking opinions over in ffoc.co.uk

At that sort of mileage its not franchise dealer material. AA (or similar) vehicle inspections although not infallable are a good idea and any minor faults discovered can be used as leverage for a reduction in price and serious ones a reason to walk away. They will also provide you with a realistic value based on condition and service history.Any decent dealer will have no objections to one being carried out on his stock. It goes without saying that a HPI check is an absolute must.

its funny you say that. Over in the Peugeot community we tend to say that its fitted with the Ford engine!

What's the recommended service interval by Ford? On the Pugs its 20,000 miles which I personally think is too long.
