If cruise controls can be used, why can't vehicles be fitted with a device that gives audible and visible warning when pre-set limits, e.g. 30, 60 and 70 m.p.h are breached? (Or maybe they are, in luxury cars?)

Was it here recently that someone suggested that such devices are in the making, except the warning level is fed to the car via GPS?
Technically possible, just like that Speedcamera-hunting GPS (Geodsy Morpheus - www.geodesy-uk.co.uk/), but the database would be huge and IMHO unmaintainable what with the constant LA tinkering with speed limits.

I once had to drive a BMW 7series. I`m sure that had a digital readout on the display plus audible warning at a certain speed.

Obviously the technology has been round for some years as most german cars are limited to the magic 155. The top spec Laguna has one that works in conjunction with the cruise control (you can see the man on the telly ad select it).
Would be interested to know if anyone knows of an after market manufacturer that makes such devices, as driving in this speedcamera world would be a lot less stressful even for those of us who do not intentionally break the speed limit.

Most new Mercedes have user definable speed limiters fitted along with the cruise control.
The technology is available but you need to be willing to pay for it.

User configurable audible and visual speed warning is part of the standard kit on all Holden Commodores and Ford Falcons for at least the past 5 years (in Australia). If GM and Ford can do this in oz then why cant this old technology be used here?

BMW have been doing this going back 8+ years. I have my audible warning set so just to warn when breaking the 70mph limit by some margin.

Counter productive.
A mates bike has a red light on the dash at a preset speed.
It takes the will power of Rachel from Waterlooville to resist riding in such a way as to ensure the light never goes out.

Mercedes' have had this feature for quite a few years now, you select either "cruise control" mode or "speed limit" mode. In "speed limit" mode you select a speed by moving the cruise stalk up and down (30, 35, 40mph etc) and the car will not accelerate above this speed. As they all have electronic throttle control (drive by wire) it feels as though the accelerator pedal has gone dead when you reach the set speed. The system can be over-ridden by flooring the accelerator (in case you suddenly need to get out of trouble).
In 1998 I collected a customer's S-reg Merc E280 for its first service, coming into a village with a 30 limit I thought I'd try the speed limiter function. Set it to 30, marvelled as the accelerator did indeed go dead at said speed, slowed down, accelerated hard and it levelled at 30 again, bumbled along at 30 for a mile or so and then got bored... Floored the throttle, and spotted the radar-wielding WPC not five seconds later, 400 yards ahead. Too late, 47mph, £60, 3 points, just like that!
