VW Golf Mark 7 - Paint blemish on new vehicle - sanders barnstaple

I have recently purchased a new Golf Mark 7 in Reflex Metallic Silver. The car now has 200 miles on the odometer.

I have recently discovered a paint blemish on the rear bumper under the near side back light cluster. I took the car back to the VW dealers and they confirmed it was a warranty issue. I questioned whether the re-sprayed panel would match the rest of the car and they advised me to talk to their designated body repairers.

This I have done and they confirm the blemish and that it was not caused by accident damage and asubsequent re-spray. The problem is the original paint. The said silver was the worst colour to match and advised me that the end result might leave me with a finish worse than it is now. They told me of a customer (VW) last year who had a similar problem and even after 6 re-sprays of the offending panel they never managed to match the colour. What may match from one angle will be different from another angle.

What do you suggest I do? VW Customer Care Passenger Cars have just advised me to get the bumper re-sprayed and hope for the best ! Not very encouraging.

Can I ask, at the very least, for a refund of the £500 extra I paid for this paint finish?

Thanks for any advice

Forgive my pragmatic approach but it would appear you are worrying about somthing that has not and may not even happen.

Silver cars are being resprayed with perfect results constantly. I suggest you find and use an alternative shop who are more confident of the quality of their work.

Dad has a silver Micra, had it for about 6 years now. About 3 years ago some lowlife scraped the back bumper right down to the black plastic and simply cleared off. Took car to local Smart repairer who resprayed 1/2 the bumper and the paint match was perfect, cost £50 cash. More recently he scraped the passenger side down a barrier in a car park. Body shop painted the whole side of the car and again the match is perfect.

Same as in all professions there are good and bad.

I think when you spend money on a brand new car, especially one that purports to be from a quality brand, you have a right to expect a perfect paint finish from new.

In your circumstances, I would write a letter to the supplying dealer (to the Sales Controller or Dealer Principal) outlining your concern, saying you will allow their designated paint/body shop one attempt at getting a perfect finish.

In this letter you will advise them that if the paint finish is not up to the expectations of a reasonable person for a car with 200 miles on the clock, then you will invoke the Sale of Goods Act and ask them for a refund for the car or a direct replacement.

A bit drastic, perhaps, but it will show them you know your position and that you are serious. After all, the last thing you want is for someone to de-value your car as a trade-in in three years time because of the poor paint finish on the rear bumper.

Hope this helps and do return to tell us your progress.

Many thanks for all your posts and advice. I believe 72 Dudes approach might be the one to pursue although will wait for a reply from VW re Sale of Goods Act before heading off to the designated body shop.

Unfortunately, if the finish after the re-spray does not match, then it is the resposibility of the body repairers to make good until it does as they are contracted by VW to fix the warranty issue and that smacks of being a bit unfair when the fault lies with VW. The body repairers will only be re-imbursed for the original re-spray and not for further work if needed.

The car passed through the VW factory quality control and then the dealer's inspection process which is a bit worrying for a manufacturer carrying a quality image.

I will keep the forum up to date with developments.

I promised to update the forum on this subject.

VW UK were sympathetic but not a lot of help initially. The Retailer just offered a re-spray under warranty.

I wrote to the parent company in Germany and they passed it on to the executive office of VW UK Ltd., In turn, they arranged for a paint inspection to be carried out by an organisation called PVWi (Paint, Volkswagen Inspection). This confirmed the belmish and found another five caused, an I quote, by "uneven base coat which affected lay down".

The inspector also suggested I try to get the vehicle replaced as no body shop, however good, can replicate the factory paint finish at point of manufacturer.

The good news is that VW have agreed to supply me with a new vehicle to the same spec - namely a 5 door, Golf Series Seven, 1.4TSi, Reflex Silver with the additional options I had the original car fitted.

So, thanks for all your advice. A happy ending but it took time!!

Do you know whether your blemish arose in the factory, or could it be the result of a quick fix following damage in delivery transit? It seems touching-up after delivery is not uncommon.

Ref the last post. The body repair shop was of the opinion that the blemish was of factory origin and that there had been no accidental damage (in transport) or re-spray.

Don't forget that your contract of sale is with the VW dealer, not the body shop, so the onus is on the VW dealer to make sure you are satisfied after any repair.

I wonder cynically if such a tooth sucking approach puts enough people off to be worthwhile cost saving exercise for them....thats another one we've fobbed off Jimbo.

Doesn't matter to you if it takes them 20 resprays and 5 gallons of paint, they have to keep doing it till they get it right, and you'll be wearing their courtesy car out at the time.

My Ruby Red MB @ 17 years old somehow manages to get perfect paint matching when my handy little one man and his dog body man does the necessary periodical touching in for me.

Time I think to be realistic.

You have chosen to buy a car from a supplier which has been identified by many on this Forum as being one which falls far short of the trading integrity reasonably expected of them.

Your car can only be "repaired" out of the original factory and in the UK. There is therefore something of a lottery involved as to the quality of the final result.

By the time you have shared road space for this car with the others on this planet for a few years, your car will not have its original appearance.

Leave it alone, reflect upon your choice of supplier and buy a product from some other maker next time - maybe a competitor, beginning with "T".

Just shows that you need to inspect a new car thoroughly afore you accept it.

Believe it or not, reputable suppliers do this for you as the vehicle is built.

Unfortunate as it might appear even cars from the "T" brand can get slight knocks in transit and at the dealer. Most get touched up before the owner spots them.

As soon as you drive off the forcourt in a new car it instantly becomes used. First time you park in a supermarket sone numpty is liable to hit it witha trolley or scrape a shopping down the side.

You have to accept it or stop driving new cars and just run bangers.

I've never bought a new car, although I've had several nearly new ones. I always get a sense of relief when I've somehow managed (never deliberately!) to put the first scratch on one. As I typed that I realised that one of the disadvantages of having a company car must be the necessity to keep it pristine.

Great result.

Just a shame that initially VW and the dealer were not interested in solving the problem and that you had to have the trouble of a proper paint inspection via Germany.

I am in Australia and have a similar problem with paint blemishes on a new Golf 7 110.

Could you please let me have details of the Volkswagen folk you contacted at the VW home Office in Germany.

VW Golf Mark 7 - Paint blemish on new vehicle - Snakey

At least a happy ending, but it doesn't say much for the quality of good leaving VW's factory. At least if it was transit damage you could understand it!

VW Golf Mark 7 - Paint blemish on new vehicle - sanders barnstaple

Sorry not to get back to you immediately but I have just returned from a trip to the Northern Territories of Australia!

Here are the contact details you requested: The two names just happened to be the Customer Care staff who handled my correspondence.

I have noticed other Series 7 Golfs'with identical (to my) paint blemishes. The inspector informed me that the main body shell is painted by robots with the paint under great pressure. The inside of the vehicle plus front and rear bumpers are painted by hand with standard air guns. It was the latter paint work that was 'below manufactures standard'

Good luck and keep the forum posted.

I appear to have similar issues with my Golf in Reflex Silver.

You mention that PVWi found five other blemishes. Can you advise in what areas.

My car appears to be affected under the rear stop lights/rear bumper, front bumper, inside door frames and the bonnet. What I find frustrating is that it depends on the light/sun glare on the paintwork and which direction I view the affected area. VW customer services on the advice of their bodyshop say there is no claim under warranty.

Thanks
