Ford Fiesta Saloon 1.25 Zetec (2000) - Radiator Hose Circlips - KenC

Hello readers, my wife has an old but reliable Fiesta, I would like to drain & replace the antifreeze. But the spring loaded Circlip on the bottom hose is at an awkward angle and I am wondering how on earth to squeeze it to release the bottom hose.

Can anyone give me any tips please ?

I am fearfull of damaging the bottom hose or adjacent aircon pipework, Thank you

I've used pipe wrench in the past.

or get a new pipe and cut the old one off.

You could try the correct pliers like these,www.tooled-up.com/product/sealey-hose-clamp-pliers...d. Also you could remove the hose from the other end if access is easier.hth

There's usually a drain plug or tap at the bottom of the rad on the nearside.

Remember to replace the clip with a jubilee as sometimes the original clip will not properly seal. Yes, I use an adjustable pipe-wrench. It was only two days ago that I saw the correct tool in a car-parts shop; very expensive for a tool that only does the one job, whereas the pipe-wrench is something which I carry in my toolkit as they have many uses.

thank you for your suggestion, I have had a look but cannot locate any drain plug or tap, have you seen one ( drain tap/plug) yourself on a similar age Fiesta ?

There were several makes or radiator used-none were fitted with drain taps-some had a drain plug but as already said, the normal way of draining was to remove the hose. The car would normally be supplied with 10 year anti-freeze(the ten year refers to the anti-corrosion elements) and would not require regular servicing of the coolant.

thank you for your reply, I have looked at the special pliers. It is ridiculous that such a simple task cannot be carried out with out a specialist tool.

No, no, no! You don't need the special tool! Ten second job with an adjustable pipe wrench. Just squeeze the two tabs together and slide the clip back. But if you use something shorter, like pliers, you can't get a proper grip and the clip will keep springing out of your grip. Pipe wrench - keep one in your tool kit. So many uses for one.

Further to that.. Some tips for changing the anti-freeze.

When the bottom hose is removed and the old coolant gushes out and you catch it in, say, an old washing-up bowl.. You'll find that what comes out isn't the amount stated in the manual. That's because a lot is left behind in the heater and, in my diesel Fiesta, the EGR cooler. You could, if you're silly like me and don't mind poisoning yourself, blow down the header-tank filler orifice! I got another two litres out that way.

Refilling is the same, you can't fill up in one go. Fill to the mark, run the engine for a while, and the level will go down as the coolant is pumped into the far reaches of the system. When you go for the first run, the level will go down again, and will have to be topped up again. So, you aren't going to know just exactly how much new coolant is going to go back in. You've got two choices.. Either mix the correct ratio of anti-treeze to water, more than you'll really need, and keep what's left over for any future top-ups - Or - work out the correct quantity of anti-freeze to put in the system and put that in first, then top up with water as the coolant is pumped around and the level drops.

I didn't use tap water - but that's me. Don't trust what's in it these days. In my old, damp house I have a de-humidifier. It gives me two litres of distilled water each day. I used that. Or you could use a pot of 'de-ionised' water from your local car-parts shop, especially if you live in a hard water area, or if the local authority has deemed that you can tolerate having Hexafluorosilicic acid in your tap water. Wouldn't want any of that in my car engine!

Just one of the problems due to bean-counters saving pence at the expense of easy serviceability, I imagine clips are cheaper and quicker to install than Jubilee clips.

certainly are.

and remember the engine is dressed and the suspension assembled separately from the main production line with easy access before the engine/chassis are 'married' to the body.

I have given up on the idea of draining the Coolant via removal of the bottom hose

I have located a drain plug and bought the correct antifreeze, once the weather warms up a little I will using the drain plug at the base of the radiator drain what coolant I can out.

I have a further questions, common sense seems to dictate that I do this with the engine cold, however what about the closed thermostat ? will some coolant be trapped in part of the cooling circuit ?

I am wondering is it more efficient ( meaning being able to drain out more coolant ) to drain the coolant when the engine is hot ( and thermostat open ? )

Then wait for the engine to cool completely before refilling with fresh antifreeze/water I would of course be very carefull when opening the expansion tank cap

Any helpfull comments please

The thermostat will close almost as soon as you start draining-and it will certainly be closed as soon as the fresh anti-freeze goes in.Thermostats have a small hole or a "nick" inthe edge of the valve to allow air to escape or the A/F to drain.
