Land Rover Discovery - Selling Discovery, Considering Electric - Mark Hargreaves

Afternoon All,

Would it be possible to you can help / offer some advice.

I currently own a Land Rover Discovery First Edition and had it since new; currently 38K on the clock; options are to pay or refinance the balloon of £34K or Part Ex, Sell, etc. Naturally as with any Land Rover, its a love hate relationship and we have had good bad days together; but have to say i love the luxury.

When the car was acquired I needed a 7 seater and this is no longer a consideration.

As Electric vehicles I have started to turn my attention to should and can look to mitigate some of the initial cost of buying / leasing one via a salary sacrifice scheme. Never really complete trips beyond 200 miles, and the charging networks are progressing.

My considerations:

> Sell / Part Ex the Disco; who and whats best approach as bound to be hit on sale.

> Look at EV; but which and do any stand up to the Luxury that I am used to and would like to keep. Is EV even there now

> Look to upgrade to newer disco (2021 model around the corner) Defender or such.

Help help / support / advice is greatly appreciated.

Hello Mark. As you, rightly, have an open mind, the first thing to do is to work out what your needs are. Mileage / size / accommodation / performance / budget.

I think most of us on here would counsel you against another Land Rover. If you're paying that much for a brand-new car, you have the right to expect reliability. Some Land Rovers are fine, far too many aren't.

If you're thinking of going electric, you have the choice of three types :

- so-called self-charging hybrid (new Toyota Corolla 2.0 is excellent of this type)

- PHEV (Skoda Superb IV and the forthcoming Octavia IV; BMW X-series; Ford Kuga PHEV)

- full electric (I've just ordered a Kia E-Niro; the 4+ model is under £40,000, even before the Government grant, and has as standard all the 'luxury' items you'd need). If your budget is higher than that, the Jaguar I-Pace is well reviewed, although I don't know whether it's any more reliable than its LR stablemates. The Jaguar and Kia share a real-life range of 250+ miles, unlike many other EVs.

I'm going to stick my neck out here and say, going by the above statement, something other than an accepted 'premium' brand just ain't gonna cut it (such as a Kia or Hundai), regardless of how much standard equipment it has!.

If you want full electric, you'd be looking at the Jag i-Pace, Audi e-tron (or e-tron Sportback), Merc EQC, Volvo XC40 Recharge, Polestar 2, or whichever Tesla takes your fancy.

If you want to go hybrid there are plenty of choices, but assuming you'd want reliability as well as luxury, a Lexus of some kind would be a good place to start (assuming you don't mind the looks).
