VW Passat GTE Advance - VW Passat Lead Time? - PDC73

I'm fortunate enough to have a company car as part of my remuneration package. I chose to replace my existing car with a VW Passat GTE Advance back in February. An estimated delivery date of mid May was given.

Then Covid 19 struck and VW shut down production for around 5 weeks in mid March.

The fleet management company now say that they estimated delivery time is sometime in 2021. This is the same for colleagues who have ordered vehicles from other manufacturers such as Honda and BMW.

We can't fathom how a 5 week shutdown would cause a 7+ month delay.

We've a theory that as they've already had a wedge of the cash from the fleet management company they have that cash in the bank and they are now prioritising new orders made in the showroom. After all, if you walked in off the street and were told that you had to wait a year for a new car, would you buy?

Can anyone shed any light on the real reason why such a disproportionate delay has been added following a relatively short shutdown?

Manufacturers have probably rescheduled vehicle production to "comply" to minimise their corporate fuel consumption fines from the EU - by limiting production of bigger, less efficient vehicles and prioritising small, efficient ones they reduce their average CO2.

In theory this shouldn't affect UK sales as we aren't in the EU from December 2020 but the SMMT has already warned that UK imports will be affected.

I'm sure RT is right, but the GTE should be one of the more environment-friendly cars being encouraged. Maybe see what delivery is like on a Skoda Superb PHEV?

I've no idea on he specifics of this one, but I'd suggest massive demand allied to huge disruption to a horrendously complex supply chain, with components coming in from all points of the globe. And all, theoretically, arriving 'just in time'.

It's not that long ago that there was a nine month wait for a diesel Audi A3.

The production line was closed fo 5 weeks but it does not just start up again - and there is a knock on effect with supply of parts as well as all the delays in taking the cars from the facory to the ports and onwards to the different countries. And then on top of that VW may be prioritising certain cars over others.
