Emailed a friend at a new car sales dealership. No sales since last Friday. Service department is keeping busy. His view is they'll have to shut down at the end of the week.

Son-in-law says people are still coming in to their Land Rover dealership.

I guess to a certain extent it depends on where you are in the country and how high people believe the threat to be. The current advice would seem to preclude going shopping for a new car but perhaps Land Rover customers have their own rules.

I regularly peruse an online auction site for dealer part exchanges, mostly in the North West of England. Towards the end of last week few cars were meeting reserve and I note today that all the lots are on a "buy now" basis, many with reduced prices.

A bit of a blow to the trade which PX'ed a lot of stock for the new registration at the start of the month only to find the bottom dropping out of the re-sale market.

Perhaps there will be a resurgence of bangernomics. Many people will still need to go to work and may not fancy busy public transport - and the roads are probably less crowded than usual.

A mate just dropped £16k on a new Ford on Saturday. Reckons he got a great deal, big discount, good PX etc.

He's happy and good on getting deals so there must be some round and some sales to be made.

Clearly a worrying time for many of us job wise though.

So far Arnold Clark Group have announced closure, as have Marshall Group, Lookers, Sytner and JCT600. They sometimes have a different name over the door. Expect more over the next couple of days.

Totally understand the position and I was calling for a quarantine as well.

My mate is very upset though as his new car was going to be available later today and its registered to him already.

He may not get it for months now and the warranty is ticking away!

Senior tech at a joint Nissan/Renault/Dacia dealership tells me they sold a grand total of 3 new cars at the weekend.
As March is the main sales month, those figures are disastrous for a weekend.
He expects Nissan UK and Renault UK to drop there sales target for the month, otherwise they may decide to precregister a large volume of stock.
They had a big push on the new Juke and Micras.
Dacia not as pushy on sales targets volumes other than the Duster but the figures are ‘manageable’

All car sales are closed as of this morning until further notice as far as I am aware. Most of the trade sources are as well including all auction houses. It's not clear if it is possible to, legally, sell a car at the moment.

Even if the glass palace workshops shut down i expect most indy workshops will carry on as best they can.

If everywhere shuts down then cars missing services (thinking Kia warranties) and expiring MOT tests are a couple of things to ponder, going to be interesting if i can't get the Toyota MOT'd Monday, if i can't get to work that's 28 to 56 tons a day of bulk food don't delivered to factories, yes i can use another car but others may not have that option,.

My 306 will be collected from my indy tomorrow. The 207 was booked in for next Wednesday but they have decided to close on Friday, so that mustl be postponed. As luck would have it, there is 2 months 'spare' on the MoT because I forgot it last year ... :-)

The advice from the DVSA is if your mot due date is before 30th March nothing changes - you gotta get an MOT or else as usual.

If the due date is after 30th March this notice applies.

Quite surreal times, hardly using a car except for the very odd trip to the supermarket. Didn't do any panic buying and am adopting sit it out attitude and staying in as much as possible. Not much traffic round when I walk the dog for my daily exercise but we go a longish way keeping ourselves to ourselves.

My friend who owns and runs an independent garage has been told by VOSA they are classed as key workers, so they are working as normal.

He did say in our phone conversation they had had a few cancellations of MOT appointments but still fairly busy.

Toyota MOT due mid April, booked in for this Monday and unless the garage cancels we'll get it done anyway, apart from it being a useful check on emissions and brake efficiency etc i'd rather keep the anniversaries as they are.

Update - as their website suggested most ATS branches would stay open, I tried to book an MoT next week at our local one, to be told they would be doing no MoTs, but would do servicing jobs; adding that it had nothing to do with the 6-month extension. Strange.

For franchises selling on behalf of the manufacturers (not car supermarkets) this may accelerate their ongoing demise.

Cars, with their technology and personalisation, are becoming more like devices, in the eyes of the manufacturers. The manufacturers want to devolve the dealerships to just deliveries, test drives, and maintenance, and make the sale, and the ongoing customer relationship, direct with the manufacturer. When you buy an iPhone, you have a direct relationship with Apple, not Phones4U or wherever sold you it. Apple can then control and 'value add' that relationship, without an intermediary muddying the waters. eg. how many car problems in recent years are resolved by people realising the dealer didnt upgrade some software, or the message to the owner about the upgrade was fudged? Manufacturers want to stop dealers dropping the ball.

Moreover, dealerships, especially franchises, are perceived as the face of the manufacturer, and may often do the manufacturer a disservice when encouraging loyalty - we've all been there,.,,

They'll supply and fix them, but the owner relationship will be with the manufacturer, and the manufacturer will have a much stronger relationship with your data, your finance package, and your loyalty.

Imagine that cars' software were based on Windows. My PC takes longer to boot up from having been switched off than it would take a 1950s Ford Popular on a damp morning. Which is of course why we leave the computers we use regularly in standby mode unless we're going away.

Nope. Every year, literally thousands of unforseen repairs attract manufacturer compensation claims, often successful. Dealers cannot, and should not, diagnose and deal with inherent manufacturing issues, especially software-related ones. Because they increasingly cant.

The most damming example of recent years is dealers across the spectrum failing to inform diesel buyers that their cars might start malfunctioning due to loads of short journeys. A manufacturer design flaw made worse by dealer ignorance and sales targetting. Pitiful scenarios like that have to end. By the manufacturer stating clearly the suitablility of a vehicle and then backing it up directly with appropriate customer support.

Car was going in tomorrow for MOT, due mid April, garage called yesterday and are shutting down for the duration.

A question for owners of modern Diesels, if that is the only car you have how are you going to keep the DPF happy if all the present journeys are shortish hops, as the govt ramps up the crashing of the economy, sorry, shutdown, the old bill will be relishing their new found authority over normally law abiding people, so if stopped is driving nowhere to clear the DPF allowed?
