Accord and Avensis CVT - Mike Sammon
Hi,
Sorry for another post but thought the topic was changing in my last one. I want another automatic large family car. Avensis/Accord size. I like the sound of CVT’s. I’ve heard many hate them but I’d like to try one and Honest John reckons the Multidrive S CVT in the Avensis (2009-2015) is a great one. which Accords had a CVT and was it as good as their other auto boxes?

None. The only CVT’s Honda sell here are the Jazz and Hybrid models. The Accord is a tough as old boots torque converter box.

Ah okay, thanks. Still can’t decide between an Avensis and an Accord autos. About 2009-10 maybe. Which is the more durable car overall you reckon? Will make sure it has a full service history.

Our local taxi company use the Toyota Avensis (though manual version), which I think is a good sign. I've driven 250K in Honda Petrol Manuals with no mechanical problems over the past 15 years.

Personally I would look at the condition and ownership history for an individual car rather than just the manufacturer.

I'm told Toyota is cheaper than Honda for spare parts, but then I've never needed to replace anything apart from an exhaust sensor for my Hondas (apart from consumables).

THanks, sounds good. I like the Avensis hatchbacks. Think they look most practical. If it’s an Accord it might have to be an estate.

They’re both pretty longlived but the Accord is a better drive and generally of higher quality all round. The Avensis is good but bland, it’s a bit better on fuel and cheaper to buy to start with but it’s not as nice to drive or look at and that daft electronic parking brake can be a pain as it ages. I’d favour the Honda but wouldn’t rule out a good Avensis with full dealer history.

Thanks. Going to look at an Avensis hatchback and an Accord next week. Just hope I don’t regret downsizing the boot over my Almera Tino.

The generation of Avensis you’re looking at in this price range are all 4dr saloons or estates, it was never available as a hatch. It was the previous gen cars that were available as a hatchback. These are now dated but still excellent sub £5k buys. Auto Trader:

Yes I might get older if it has a near full service history. What type of auto was in that generation Avensis?

A traditional torque converter set up with Little likely to worry. Buy wisely and these do make great cheap big wagons but remember they’re dated now and unlikely to hold onto much of that value.
