Hatchback - Which Hatchback has most rear legroom - Harinder Dhillon

I'm looking for a mid size 5 door car, which i mainly drive with me and partner only. However now and again I have to take my 5'10 parents aswell. Im looking for a hatchback with the most legroom

If the car has sliding rear seats, that would help aswell

I drive a seat Toledo (same as a skoda rapid). It has enough toys to keep me happy, good fuel economy and plenty of space. I'm 6"4 and can sit comfortably behind the drivers seat with it in my driving position.

1 year old models can be had for 10k with a decent spec.

Not everyone's cup of tea but for me it's a no nonsense motor that ticks the boxes.

I also drive a Seat Toledo, have done so since August, to be honest I've yet to sit in the back seat so cannot comment about leg room, but generally the car is very roomy with a big boot to boot!

I undetstand the Nissan Pulsar boasts a spacious rear passenger cabin, worth your while in looking at one of these too.

avoid the ford focus, seriously cramped.

Avoid the Citroen C4 and Peugeot 308, both cramped

As someone who hasn't sat in the back of a car for years, being obliged instead to sit in the front, drive and listen to people moaning about the lack of legroom in the back, I couldn't make a constructive contribution to this thread, unfortunately.

Although (edit) I would say that if you have front seat passengers (and drivers) who always insist on having their seats pushed fully back, then the extent of decent rear legroom is likely to be restricted for tall, back seat passengers, even in cars with decent rear space.

Best legroom i've seen in normal cars is the Skoda Superb, though a large car itself, legroom probably on a par with Landcrab and the Princess/Ambassador that replaced it.

You have not mentioned budget so choice is almost unlimited.

If you go for estates like Mercedes C class etc. there is good legroom. Look for cars which are commonly used as taxis to get some inspiration for rear passenger comfort.

Kia Optima SW has a very good legroom.

The best way is to sit in the cars. Usually specifications don't list legroom dimensions.

Elderly passengers might find it difficult to get in and out if car is very low. So don't discard small SUVs.

Very good point re small SUVs, Movilogo. Generally if you sit higher, with more distance between seat and floor, the less legroom you need to be comfortable.

You haven't told us your budget, Harinder, but I'd say the suggestions above are good ones, notably the Skoda Rapid / SEAT Toledo and Nissan Pulsar. Small SUV's aren't usually any longer than hatchbacks, and the Ford C-Max is a good one for ease of entry and exit.

If you don't want a car that is too big then i would suggest having a look at taller hatchbacks or smaller mpv's. Having the seats higher means that longer legs don't need so much space between the fron and rear seats to get comfortable.

We used to have a vauxhall meriva, and while i didn't particularly like the car (very narrow power band and heavy clutch made it a pain in stop start traffic), it was certainly spacious. And if the standard seating doesn't provide enough room, the 2 outer sections of the rear seats can be pushed closer together then slid back another 6" or so to give limo like legroom!. Without a budget it is difficult to make a reccommendation, but as well as the meriva you could be looking at stuff like the ford c max, hyundai ix20, kia venga, vw golf sv or vw touran.

Of course the other advantage is that elderly passengers will almost certainly appreciate the higher seats for the ease of getting in and out!

Nissan Pulsar - startling amoint of rear legroom in those.

An underrated car, shunned by the motoring press as unadventurous and boring..But it gets the most important thing right in these times of neglected roads, ride quality

Those adjectives could be fired at a myriad of hatchbacks - Astra, Auris, i30 - but none have the epic internal space of the Pulsar. The amount of standard tech is impressive too.

A 1.5dci (a proven engine) in Tekna spec would make a good used buy at 3-4 years for someone after no nonsense spacious and economical travel.

also good is the Fiat Qubo

something slighlty bigger the Citroen Berlingo Multipace, Peugeot Partner Tepee, Fiat Doblo or Ford Tourneo Connect are also good.

As is the Skoda roomster

We have a 2012 Jazz. Both sons over 6 feet sit in rear in comfort...As they did in our Mark1 Yaris...with the seat pushed back.

Good to see some recommendations for the Pulsar. I drive a 1.5 diesel Tekna as a work car,, 22000 miles pa, about 60mpg, I am 6ft and have very comfortable rear legroom behind the drivers seat with front seat in my position.
Ride is very good, as is economy, changing to Michelin Cross climates mean it now handles better through corners than previous focus and golf. Cabin noise very low, get yourself a decent test drive.Agree with a previous comment can't see why the press had a problem with it,

I agree the Pulsar is under-rated. My uncle has one and loves it. It has now been dropped from production I think? This might make it even cheaper to buy one but may make it less attractive longer term when it comes to selling on.

Big rear legroom, sliding seats, easy rear access in a medium sized car? Skoda Roomster.

Large rear doors, higher rear seating plus the gap between the B pillar and the front of the rear seats (which is significantly bigger than most other cars of comparable size), make it easier for the infirm to get in and out of it.

Impossible to answer without knowing how much legroom you need to drive. I'm 6'1" and by lifting the drivers seat higher than usual and adjusting the steering wheel position, I can also move my seat forward to liberate enough room for normal sized passengers in the rear of my Mk3 Octavia, while allowing me to drive. A modernish Golf with height adjustable seats will also enable this compromise.
