VW Golf - exhaust fume smell coming through air vents - orange86

Hi, i have a VW Golf 2.0ltr tdi (2009).

When stationary i can smell exhaust gas fumes coming through the air vents.
The smell disappears when i start driving / turn on air recirculation.

i have had the long rubber seal replaced in the engine bay, the injectors have been checked for leaks and all this is fine.

i'm think its a exhaust leak, maybe close to the engine?

some suggestions on this would be appreciated.

Maybe also an oil leak dripping on to the engine/exhaust? Or a crank case breather venting to atmosphere? Or exhaust fumes leaking through the (usually hidden) extractor vents in the rear of the car.

Coolant can smell like burnt toast.

I you havn't smelts it before you might confuse it with an exhaust smell.

Perhaps you have a leaking heater core?

i took my car to kwik fit, they put it up on the lift and had a look at the exhaust underneath.

Guy said it looked fine, but noticed some carbon / oil deposits on some pipes under the engine. he said maybe its just due to age but get an experienced mechanic to have a look at it.

i had one of the rear air vents replaced recently. mechanic checked the other side air vent too. both are fine now. its not that what is causing fumes through the air vents when car is stationary.
