Not sure if this the right area to post but here goes. Just rang Direct Line to renew and mentioned in passing I was driving to Italy next year and the helpful chap said you only have 3rd party cover when abroad. Fully comp costs a bit extra just for that period of travel. I did not know that but he said it is in the small print..hence I told you so! I will have to remember to ask for the upgrade. I suppose everyone else knows this!

Clear enough if you think about it and read the small print but I'm old enough to remember needing Green Cards and Bail Bonds to drive in mainland Europe.

Pay extra for EU use on Mrs B's LV policy as her car is one that goes abroad, far mor days in year than we need and we just go. I have long foresworn ANY policy that needed me to tell company in advance of trips over the channel; too easy to be tempted by cheap weekend ferry crossings and forget to ring for 'permission'.

I used to be insured with DL, but switched insurers specifically because of this issue. There are many other companies who include full comprehensive cover while driving in Europe for up to 90 days / year at no additional premium.

When your insurance is due for renewal I suggest you look at other options.

As above LV charge it as a 'menu' add on in same way a guarnateed courtesy car or legal cover. Probably about £30 for year on a £300+ policy.

No issue with reasonable extra, it's the need to contact in advance and advise that I regard as no go. It's not just date either, it's which countries. So if you tell then France and go to say Alsace you're not covered to pop over the (non existent) border into Germany. Same if you venture past Dunkerque into Belgium if you arrive way too early for your ferry. In fact on one occasion I missed the turn for Dunkerque and was in Belgium before I realised and could turn round.

LV now provide eu comp cover free. I found out when i phoned before travelling this year and was not charged asit is now standard. Just got my renewal and down by £9 too and on the certificate.

All this UK charging extra for EU countries is unheard of with our french insurer - we asked our agent and he was puzzled as to why we asked because if you are fully comp with a French insurer you are fully comp anywhere in europe - no extra charges, no phoning up etc.

I'd long suspected that to be case. Is it same with mobile phone roaming?

I just have a PAYG sim from LeClerc mobile in my phone and if I remember correctly, the last time I "roamed" to the UK about 3 years ago I just went the the website where I top up and enabled roaming.

The EU (!) abolished roaming charges for mobile phones in June - you can now use your phone abroad (calls, texts & data) with no additional charges above your standard tariff.

Not always - my Vodafone contract is free calls & text BUT data is capped @ 500MB, rather than 3Gb
