Hyundai/Kia prices moved out of the budget sector 3-5 years ago, depending on model - each generation of model has been a ramp up in quality for about 3 decades - so it's unreasonable to expect them to sell better cars than Ford/Vauxhall/Peugeot/Citroen/Fiat at lower prices.

They made it clear long ago that they want to move from budget through mainstream into premium, but accept that takes a very long time.

Once Genesis is established as a global premium brand, with wider range of models especially in Europe, then expect a budget brand to be launched below Hyundai/Kia.

I've never seen a 'Genesis', although I wouldn't be surprised to find that they are good value viewed objectively. But getting up there in the minds of buyers will probably take another generation. The German triumvirate sell a lot of expensive, not-really-very-good cars, and it is image not value that does it.

Kia/Hyundai will need to deliver the design and quality, but they will also need plenty of money for brand building - certainly in the UK where perceived status sells cars.

Back in the 80s I had a Vauxhall Carlton estate, lovely car. I changed jobs and started coming home for a while in a base 2 door BMW 316i, a horrid thing that didn't even have a radio in it. My neighbour's admiring comment was "you've gone up in the world!". I suppose it might have been sarcasm!

The German 3 v the Koreans would probably incur less depreciation unless I'm completely off the mark so may be a better financial prospect in the long term.

I bought one last June. Very happy with it.

I know someone that was interested in a Sorento (for it's towing ability), saw one that had been in the dealership for nearly 6 months (KX-3 trim I believe) at £34K and offered them £28K.

they accepted and he had a new car.

He is happy with it but it did have to go back to Kia to have a paint defect fixed under warranty (bubbled up paint from rust on the bodywork underneath (manufacturing defect).

all properly fixed. so all in all a good car.

The Kia Stinger GT-S is priced from £40,495 - add in special paint and a couple of extras and you're in the same price bracket

I remember when the Picanto came out, it was advertised at £4995. That's without haggling!

The "Picanto 1" is now "from £9450". That's almost double the price and it wasn't that long ago when they arrived.

I sat in one at a dealer recently and was really surprised. The quality seemed really good!

That works out for the 13 years it's been on sale as 5% per year increase - and the current model is somewhat bigger than the original, as well as much better equipped.

Well, they seem to be selling well, so people must be paying the prices!

Had planned to look closely at the Kia Sportage a few years back when buying a 4wd, but Mitsubishi ticked all the boxes and was cheaper. I wouldn't pay a premium for Kia/Hyundai over a Mitsi.

Hondas seem very sharply priced these days, or is it just my imagination/expectation?!

Nora! - Price of a Kia £42000 - iFocus

Well my brothers father in law has just spent £40,000 on a Skoda; that'd have been unthinkable 20 years ago!

Kia cars are still underrated in my opinion but they're getting there with the badge snobbery in the UK. I owned a 2008 Cee'd for 3 years/45,000 miles and it never ever let me down in that time.

I did want another Kia when replacing it but their petrol engines until 2015 where some what lacklustre.

Personally, i'd say kia/hyundai passed mitsubishi some years ago. Mitsubishi, sadly, seem to be stuck in a time vacuum from about 15 years ago and their cars do not seem to have really progressed. The outlander phev is very popular, but by all accounts it does not seem to be a very good car, even by SUV standards. The mirage is an awful little thing, hopelessly off the pace. The ASX, eclipse cross and 'standard' outlander are no better than average in any area. Then there is the interior quality, rightly or wrongly, showroom appeal plays a big part in choice, and that is where mitsubishi's lack of proper investment shows, with interior plastics of a quality that kia/hyundai were at 2 generations ago.

The only new mitsubishi's i'd consider, would be an l200 double cab pick up as a possibility for a work/family vehicle, or a shogun if i wanted or needed a proper hardy old school 4x4. Anything else and i'm afraid mitsubishi wouldn't even be on the radar.

Each to their own. My Outlander does everything I need. As to being 15 years behind, in some respects yes. It has a planetary gearbox with torque converter that is just perfect for manouevring, reversing in a very controlled, slow-as-you-like manner into my awkward driveway or hitching up a trailer for example. Not having had a proper auto since 2005, I realised just what utter rubbish in day to day use the DSG is in comparison.

It is respectably economical too, at 40mpg overall driven sensibly. I don't care that the centre console plastic is hard. The leather seats are big and comfortable. I never really took to its manual predecessor but the auto, and the improvements to the Mitsubishi 4N14 diesel engine have really made it a nice car - for me. It does not, as far as I know, suffer from DPF problems - at 7,000-8,000 a year now I will soon find out, but the old one never did.

There are idiosyncracies. The radio has no DAB. The sat nav in the '4' was useless and I saved £2,000 or so by buying a 3 without it, so the phone integration clunky because I can't view the phonebook, and the leather seats are unheated, I'm not looking forward to that but I suppose I'll get over it.

I just checked the specs, the size only seems to have changed by a few millimeters each way. Unlike other cars they've managed to keep the size the same. Weight has also barely changed too.

Yikes. Fifty grand for an airport minicab and it doesn't even manage a 3/5. Ouch!

*Scrub that, not even a minicab as they don't do a diesel! 2/5 for handling, 2/5 for the interior, and the only engine option is about as efficient as the Titanic. Not only is it a clear indication of why people will continue to buy German, it also seems to suggest that the Koreans have precious little grasp of the UK luxury car market at all.

Kia/Hyundai will need to take a leaf out of Nissan and Toyota's book if they want success in the premium market. They'll need a standalone premium brand and with the rate of improvement in their products I don't see why they can't make a go of it. But no one with any sense will pay £40-£50k for a car that shares a badge with the motability specials that litter most council estates.

But no one with any sense will pay £40-£50k for a car that shares a badge with the motability specials that litter most council estates.

That's what Genesis is - originally just a model, now a sub-brand with a range of models (outside the UK) which will move to being completely standalone brand in time.

Hyundai/Kia studied the Toyota/Lexus global business model and deliberately decided not to follow it - but uses different strategies in each market rather than one global model.

For the moment, the quality of Genesis and Stinger acts as halo models for the rest of the Hyundai/Kia range which have been continually improved with each new generation over the last 3 decades.

Nora! - Price of a Kia £42000 - badbusdriver

The only problems limiting the success of the genesis in the UK market is the snobbishness and vanity of UK buyers, and the lack of a diesel or hybrid option. The car is a roaring success in the states where badge snobbery is not really a factor. A typical yank would look at the genesis and see it as a £50k car that is at least as good in terms of quality, and much better equipped than a £60k BMW, Audi or Mercedes. Whereas a Brit would laugh and say, "£50k for a Hyundai?" (what they are actually saying is, "what would my neighbours/work colleagues/fellow golf club members say if i turn up in a Hyundai?). It is a pretty sad indication of just how image obsesed most people are.

With regards to the efficiency, while it is certainly true that an 'official' average of 25.2mpg is nothing to write home about, it is worth noting that in the honest john review of the genesis, during the course of several hundred miles of driving, they actually achieved a higher figure than that. The BMW 535i has an official average of 37.7mpg but since very, very few cars can actually get near their official average mpg, it stands to reason that the actual difference could be very small.

It ain't gonna happen in this lifetime, but if i was in the market for a car of this nature, i would give the genesis very serious consideration.

I also have a soft spot for it's unloved (in the UK) predecessors the grandeur and the XG30 (particularly the XG30, a car so un-cool it's actually cool!)

But there is a nice 5000 mile 2016 Genesis also on autotrader for Half price, and that is a good deal cheaper than a 1 yr old 3.0 litre xf...

Yes, that is the upside of what i said in my previous post, assuming you are buying 2nd hand.

Clearly not an upside if you bought new, ouch!

Reminds me of the old ford scorpio which, it was said, lost £15k as soon as it left the showroom!. That again, made it a shrewd used buy for someone looking for a roomy, well equipped barge (and with the 24V Cossie engine, fast!)

That 24V engine had similar input from Cosworth Consultancy as the Vauxhall 16v engines - less actually than the Red-Top original as Cosworth used to cast the cylinder heads. The difference being that the Ford 24v was based on the old Cologne V6 while the Vauxhall was based on the less dated Family II engine.

Most brands have used Cosworth Consultancy at one time or another, just as they've used Riccardo Engineering - Ford's exclusive use of the Cosworth name on road cars comes directly from their funding of the Cosworth F1 engine
