Ford C-MAX - Cmax 1600tdci 2015 clutch issue please help! - superad

Hi, in a bit of a quandary. My cmax has 56500 on it, so just in warranty. During a recent long motorway journey the clutch pedal stopped releasing properly, the pedal very slow to return and only released 2 thirds. On shorter journeys it releases ok but feels very spongy. Anyway had it to my ford dealers today and they say it definitely has a problem. To diagnose it they need to remove gearbox at 4 hrs labour at £102 per hour. Ifor it turns out to be a warranty item it will be reimbursed but if not I have to pay. So minimum £400 diagnostic. Rang ford and they aren't interested. So don't know if I should just forget warranty and pay a cheaper independent to fix it, or gamble on warranty. I think it's unfair to be charged so much to find out if it's warranty covered. I've asked if they will accept an independent diagnostics and they won't. Any ideas? Is it likely to be something covered by warranty? Clutch doesn't feel likes it's slipping it just feels spongy. It's not the return spring in the pedal either. Also very occasionally when pulling away in first the car makes a squeal sound for a few seconds, but only occasionally. Any help or suggestions appreciated.

Have you had the brake fluid changed?

I had exactly the same problem with a 2013 Focus 1.6TDCi. It was a company car that the lease company instructed the garage to change the brake fluid at its service earlier this year. After I got the car back I noticed on long journeys that the clutch pedal wasnt returning properly. It got to the point where the pedal wouldn't return at all.

The garage's excuse was that they drained the brake fluid reservoir too low and air must have got in to the system. Apparently the brake and clutch cylinders share the same hydraulic system? Anyway they either changed the fluid again or bled the system, I'm not sure, but it cured the problem - at least that's what they told me they did.

They definitely didn't change the clutch or flywheel as these failed a few months later (the car was on well over 100k miles when the clutch went and I don't think it was related to the problem with the pedal).

Had the same on a Toyota Yaris with common brake/clutch cylinder.

Bled clutch - took 10 minutes. Sorted..

Useless garages... well known issue.

Thanks guys. I don't think the fluid has been changed. I will give that a go.

Well I took it to another ford dealer, this one was better. They think the master cylinder has failed so will be stripping clutch and removing gearbox under warranty.

They also noticed that exhaust gases are being emitted from the turbo which also needs replacing. I do that know what would case that to happen.

Aw why are modern cars so poor? Surely ford know how to manufacture a clutch and turbo that lasts more than 55k.

The master cylinder is not in the clutch housing or the gear box it is the engine compartment. Regards Peter
